MTV Movie Awards becomes MTV Movie and TV Awards, does away with gendered awards

The MTV Movie Awards are no more.

In its place: The MTV Movie and Television Awards. And unlike the Golden Globes, where film and TV stars mingle on the red carpet but compete in parallel categories, MTV is all but erasing the barrier between the two. As Vulture reports, with only a few exceptions, TV shows and the performers therein will duke it out with movies, which will bring you match-ups like Moonlight vs. Jane the Virgin, Mr. Robot vs. Get Out, and more.

Another division MTV is doing away with: Gender-defined categories. No more best actor or best actress; all genders are eligible for all the awards. It's exactly what some conservatives said would happen once we legalized gay marriage. We live in the future!

New and altered categories reflect a serious shift in not just the sensibilities of MTV's younger viewers but the country at large: The new framework will celebrate movies and shows that reckon with what it means to be American and stand up against oppression

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
The Flash as Best Hero. Hahahahahahahaha

No gendered categories is very progressive. I like it, I just hope it won't mean thay women are overshadowed, as most of the voters in these awards are men ( for the Oscars at least, not sure about MTV).

If SS can win an Oscar for Makeup, this is likely going to be a slam dunk win. Even though he's technically not the film's villain as it is...

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
Damn, Allison Williams best villain nom is totally a spoiler.

Good idea to include TV shows, but this probably won't get me to pay it any attention.

But why combine the actor awards? I would think actresses are fine with their own category to bring more attention to their roles rather than lumping them in with the men. I appreciate the push for actors and actresses to be seen as equals, but I don't know if this is something their viewers were asking for.

But Emilia Clarke makes it a joke anyway.

Holy shit, I just noticed that. Might want to spoiler tag that in the OP.

Good for getting rid of the best actress/actor artificial division this are not sports. The Oscar , the Globes and all the big awards should do the same.

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!
I'm cracking up that an award is pitting one of the real-life heroes from Hidden Figures against a bunch of superheroes lmao.

So what award does Asia Kate Dillon get nominated for in split awards?

Getting rid of Gendered noms is silly to me, but these are inherently silly awards anyway. (Gender-neutral parts like in Alien are the exception, not the norm.)

Someone needs to spoiler tag a certain nomination for Get Out. It's major.

Good thing I've seen it, but concerned for the Gaffers that haven't yet.

Shouldn't Viola Davis be nominated for best villain? I can't imagine giving it to Leto for doing a bad Jim Carrey impression for 5 minutes or Cara DiGiorno belly dancing in front of a green-screen for an hour and a half.
