Well yeah because what they have on the market is a handheld and that market is all about mobile. Even the poor Vita did decent in Japan and is the sole reason it kept getting games long after it was dead in the West.
Vita did decent in comparison to other regions but it was a flopped in Japan nonetheless.

Hardware isn't the only selling point for Nintendo Switch in Japan, softwares too play a huge role in driving the sales momentum for the system.

The fuck is a Momotaro Dentetsu
A popular long running board-game style series that’s been around for decades. It was originally from Hudson Soft, which Konami purchased many years ago. The recent resurgence in the popularity of the series is thanks largely in part due to it appearing on a popular variety show a few years back. That brought the game back and Konami took the chance to bring it back and it’s been a huge hit. Combine the new found popularity due to the variety show plus nostalgia and it being on the switch, well you have a huge winner.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
A weird Board Game

With that kind of momentum it's difficult to see them putting out the Switch Pro next year. They have to be making a killing selling this many units at March 2017 launch prices.

My guess is they ride out a small dip in unit sales next year with maybe some discount for the holidays and either launch the Switch Pro in Q1 2022 or wait a bit longer and just put out a backwards compatible Switch 2 for Q4 2023 with plenty of cross-gen games for the first two years.

The fact that they've been able to maintain the same price point for 4 years with no adverse impact whatsoever gives them a lot of flexibility moving forward.

Hardware is a big factor though. Software didn't help Wii U succeed or PS4 do better than PS3 despite PS4 having way more software the Japanese love like DQ11 FFXV, FF7, and Monster Hunter.

Look at SIE Japan's decline in releases over time if you want to understand why Japan has started losing interest in their hardware: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIE_Japan_Studio

Their output has fallen off a cliff and the story is even worse when you notice all the remasters in recent years. Meanwhile PC gaming is on the rise in the region and we've seen an explosion of more high profile Japanese third party releases launching simultaneously with their PS/Xbox counterparts. DQ11, FFXV, and Monster Hunter World are all on PC with a rumored release for FF7 after the paid timed exclusivity period is over.

Someone send some Ps5 to Japan, Sony clearly doesn't give a shit about the market anymore.

Focus will be west & China, Japan is done as SIE plans go, enjoy Fate Grand Order I guess 🤣

DQXIS on the Switch will surpass 600K this year;
Taiko and Fishing Spirits should end up above 550K;
Mario & Sonic haven't charted in a while, so I expect when the Top 100 comes out for 2021 for the game to be above 400K.

Everything I've read online about the Pro points to it coming sooner rather then later. I'm personally expecting a late Spring/Summer release and I think that makes sense.

Better for them to be proactive and release a revision to main momentum, rather then waiting for sales to drop and then reacting.
It’s incredible with a market like this there are still AAA games coming out on other consoles and from developers that are not Nintendo.
I think there's a couple of reasons for this:

1. The PS/XB ecosystem in the West has been pretty strong for years, and can be very lucrative for Japanese third parties with the the right investments.

2. Change takes time. After the underperformce of 3DS and failure of the Wii U, Japanese third parties didn't give Nintendo too much support. They had to change strategy when the Switch did much better than expected, and 2021 is the first year where we really get to see the results of that change.

LOL love watching the salt rise up as Nintendo destroys the competiton in Japan.

Bububu it's not a real console, bububu the games are all mobile trash, bububu Japanese gamers have no taste waaah.

Between the stuff Nintendo make and the rather nice selection of Japanese 3rd party stuff it's great been a switch gamer.

Last year Week 51 was the biggest Week of the holidays, this year Week 52 will be the biggest week of the holidays - so the difference of 100K make sense. Next week Switch is heading towards a >300K result and will end very close to the 6 million figure. Overall it would be the third biggest year in Japan for any device with only the peak years of the DS topping it.

Still if Nintendo actually wanted they could have easily had much stronger sales both in terms of hardware and software this quarter. If they had supplied 200K units of Ring Fit for this week I have little doubts that would have impacted hardware demand. Overall it's clear that they could have surpassed 6 million by a good amount if they prioritized Japan with Ring Fit supply this quarter but instead they are allowing demand to spill into 2021.
Overall it's understandable considering they want to really accelerate their growth in China, South Korea, Taiwan and other Asian markets. For China Ring Fit is one of only 4 other Nintendo games officially launched in that country and is being sold with a bundle that is currently flying off the shelves.
It's insane to me that over an year after it's launched the game continues to resell for a 30% premium and Nintendo is only able to ship 50K per week to one of it's biggest markets.

Momotaro has held it's own against Pokemon Sword / Shield this holiday season, next two weeks I'm expecting Momotaro to actually outperform Sword / Shield

Week 49: 115.884 vs 201.838
Week 50: 166.774 vs 231.578
Week 51: 209.123 vs 288.199

Week 52 Sword /Shield: 243.476
Week 1 Sword /Shield: 196.925

Overall the performance of the game is definitely one of the huge stories in Japan this year, and with New Horizon basically becoming the best selling game in Japan of all time in less than 12 months - that's really saying something. At the end of the day the lack of huge fall title didn't end up slowing momentum for the Switch at all, it will finish pretty much flat YoY compared to 2019 during this Quarter but made huge gains during the first part of the year.
The funny thing is that we are heading towards a much stronger 2021, this year both first and third party line-ups were impacted by COVID. I imagine that Rune Factory 5, Bravely Default 2 and Bowser's Fury should have all launched this fall making things very packed. Next year we have a steady schedule of games that will allow Switch to maintain momentum and we might actually finally see Ring Fit achieve it's true potential

I know supply is an issue, but sony clearly has little interest in Japan, they shipped like as little as 1/10th of what they shipped in the US. That's not a display of interest in the region.
One big issue in Japan since the PS3 era is that Sony completely lost the youth market. Nintendo regained that with the Wii and DS and never let go. Plus with Nintendo’s position of making games for everyone, something Sony did in the ps1 and ps2 days in japan, it has been an easy sale to Japanese audiences. While playstation still has a large audience it’s mainly towards older players, high school, college age and adults. And as we know, gaming for adults in Japan isn’t as wide spread as the west. Yet it’s a market they focus on. Ask many young kids today about playstation and some believe it or not don’t know it well. It’s all about switch to them.

the supply issue is a huge problem here for sure. No supply, no hype. Heck I just saw my first ps5 commercial on Japanese tv this morning! On the news. Nintendo advertises everywhere and on every program. Sony will too eventually but they are keeping too quiet. But yeah next week with New Years is the biggest holiday of the year and no systems for people to buy is not good. The lotteries are just causing more frustration than help for those of us who want one. Not to mention Amazon Japan’s overselling the system giving people like myself an uncertain wait time for when it will arrive.

Maybe by next Christmas Sony will make important changes and all, but for the considerable future in Japan, nintendo is more than king, it’s gaming god.
