Bandai's year in Japan will be a second year in a row they see decline despite a bunch of their peers seeing growth.
At least they have embraced Steam now and will be able to make up these losses via other markets, still a huge missed opportunity for them.

By the end of the year we have one multiplat - Super Robot Wars 30 & one late port Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot for these titles I think they will crack 100K on the Switch this year. I don't think the PS4 version of SRW 30 will be able to hit 100K - as most PS4 games it will decline from it's predecessor which achieved over 105K sales.

One thing to keep in mind Bandai worked on Pokemon Snap this year which would be the best selling game if it wasn't published by Pokemon Co. which is likely to surpass 350K physical this year in Japan. The other thing is that by the end of the year I think its likely for Little Nightmares II, Taiko & Fishing Spirits to all be close or over 150K, while Family Trainer is likely to also be over 75K

I expect the decline at the end of the year to be minimal but again a missed opportunity for Bandai to see growth in Japan via allocating more resource to same day porting their games to the Switch.

When we see that PS4/PS5 titles are struggling to hit 300K while Olive Town will achieve it easily despite worse WoM than most of Bandai's output. They've never been fully onboard with the Switch and that has stalled their growth in Japan these past few years. If they had put Switch on equal footing but with some sacrifices they would be having a much stronger period right now.

Bandai could have very easily had a lot more growth on the Switch if they had adopted a different strategy since finding success with Taiko & Fishing Spirits - while games like ToA, Ace Combat, God Eater 3, Gundam Versus, MSG: E, DBZ: Kakarot, SAO: Fatal Bullet would have had a much stronger performance in Japan if they weren't launch exclusives on the PS Ecosystem. Overall their lack of adaptability has cost them a lot of market share in Japan.
If they don't correct their strategy in 2022 they could very well find themselves loosing more market share and not even being able to hit 1 million sold units. With Harada saying he is working on Bandai's most expensive game it's likely that they will have at least two PS exclusives in 2022 - Elden Ring & this other game. With PS software sales facing such rapid decline this puts into question whether these two projects will be able to hit their targets in Japan - as it's likely that these targets weren't based on software on the PS imploding in the space of an year.

Overall a very interesting situation to follow into 2022, especially as we've seen the type of results they can achieve in Japan in the near past, honestly a company of their size should be selling over 3.5 million software per year in Japan during the last few years of growth thanks to the Switch.

Disappointing physical sales for tales in Japan:. What are PlayStation fans playing in Japan? These established Japanese series games are better than ever but the sales continue to disappoint

Whatever I suppose the rest of the world will have to pick up the slack yet again.

Remember that over 70% of worldwide PS game sales are digital. So who knows, maybe including digital sales the game even had the best debut in Japan ever seen in the series.

Pretty likely Namco's Japanese sales increased from 2019 to 2020 and 2021, but the percent of them that are digital increased faster than before due to covid as happened for the other companies. Not sure if they share IR stuff with their worldwide annual sales or revenue for gaming but I think it may offer a clue.

Digital in Japan is far smaller % compared to RotW,
Unlike Western countries, you can sell a second hand physical copy of game for the PS4 back to big retail chains like GEO. For example a copy of Scarlet Nexus is ¥3,000 right now(https://buy.geo-online.co.jp/search_item/detail/5131360) or Resident Evil: Village could be sold for ¥2,300... Tales of Arise on the PS5 can be sold for ¥3,600 one week after launch (https://buy.geo-online.co.jp/search_item/detail/5161908). You can purchase these games second hand a week after launch, and they progressively go down in price - for example Resident Evil: Village is around ¥3,000-4,000 right now compared it's launch price of ¥7,990.
PSN digital discounts can't compete with second hand pricing in Japan and that's the reason most games that aren't supply constrained at launch have 20-30% digital lifetime sales

The 70% you mention earlier in your post includes huge GaaS or annual multiplayer games that in the West are having over 50% digital, but even in Japan a game like is over 70% physical because players might choose to re-sell it later - right now GEO is buying a PS5 version of last year's COD fo r¥3,300(https://buy.geo-online.co.jp/search_item/detail/5161006).
Also it includes digital only games that inflate the total number, for example Nintendo doesn't count a game like Thief Simulator in it's WW totals because it's digital only and costs a few dollars when on sales compared to something like Sakuna which has made most of it's 1 million sales at full price.

Source? Worldwide there has been a big consoles to mobile switch, but in Japan it has been bigger than in the other main console markets. This and having little houses would lead to think it's the opposite.

Yes, and In Asia or Japan in particular most of the game revenue comes from F2P digital only games, most of them for mobile.

Thanks! Most companies had this year (FY2022, so mostly 2021) a small decline YoY because last year (FY2021, so mostly 2020) had a huge spike growing a lot YoY (vs FY2020, so mostly 2019) due to covid lockdowns. So as I said, having 2020 and 2021 numbers higher than the 2019 ones.

Damn resetera sales threads are going down in flames. Everybody has left it seems. It was getting old lurking there anyway.
I see the era Japan thread has a civil war. All refugees welcome.
As long as they don't bring the drama and toxicity over here. Our threads have been pretty cozy imo.

Unlike Western countries, you can buy a second hand physical copy of game for the PS4 for very low prices. For example a copy of Scarlet Nexus is Y3,000 right now(https://buy.geo-online.co.jp/search_item/detail/5131360) or Resident Evil: Village could be bought for Y2,300... Hell even Tales of Arise on the PS5 can be found for Y3,600 one week after launch (https://buy.geo-online.co.jp/search_item/detail/5161908)
PSN digital discounts can't compete with second hand pricing in Japan and that's the reason most games that aren't supply constrained at launch have 20-30% digital lifetime sales

The 70% you mention earlier in your post includes huge GaaS or annual multiplayer games that in the West are having over 50% digital, but even in Japan a game like is over 70% physical because players might choose to re-sell it later - right now GEO is selling a PS5 version of last year's COD for Y3,300(https://buy.geo-online.co.jp/search_item/detail/5161006).
Also it includes digital only games that inflate the total number, for example Nintendo doesn't count a game like Thief Simulator in it's WW totals because it's digital only and costs a few dollars when on sales compared to something like Sakuna which has made most of it's 1 million sales at full price.
The links you listed are for GEO's buyback prices. That is how much they will give you if you sell your copy of the game to them. The prices that they sell them for will obviously be higher than that.

Hmm they did try different enough with this Tales release, it would suck if the sales is only satisfactory.

We will see what the drops are like next week, but so far it's a decline compared to Beseria which was already the worst performing game in the franchise in Japan.
Thankfully for them the game is doing very well on Steam which is a huge platform in East Asia and especially in China. It's crazy how Steam is the only platform able to bypass the Chinese regulations for now, making it all the more important for Japanese Devs to have PC as part of their growth plans.

Ring Fit has just gone out of stock and price is over Y9,000 on Amazon.co.jp

E_5D87zVIAAPRyc

Although the game saw a big drop during Q2, this coincided with smaller hardware sales compared to what Switch hardware managed last year, also Q3 was when Ring Fit launched in China making it more readily available in Japan.
My expectations of Q3 is for the game to see modest 8-12% quarter over quarter growth, surpassing 190K units according to Famitsu. Amazon.co.jp or MyNintendoStores arent tracked by Famitsu so it's likely the actual shipment Nintendo provides will be over 300K. Overall this is a so-so quarter for Hardware and Ring Fit shipments but supply for Ring Fit will go up for the holiday season considerably - while OLED & Pokemon Remakes launches will ensure hardware in Q4 sees growth YoY leading to higher sales of evergreen titles like Ring Fit.
By the end of the year I expect the game to surpass 3.3 million and coming into striking distance of Wii Fit & Wii Sports, the higher Switch hardware sales and larger supply an actually push Ring Fit to over 500K in a single Quarter like it achieved in Q3 of 2020.

Wii Games vs Ring Fit Adventure
  1. Wii Sports - 3.724.565
  2. Wii Fit - 3.561.787
  3. Wii Sports Resort - 3.165.464
  4. Ring Fit Adventure - 2.818.859

Ring Fit Adventure sales in Japan by Quarter:
  • 2019 Q4: 495.639(new)
  • 2020 Q1: 249.488(-49.7%)
  • 2020 Q2: 328.387(+31.6%)
  • 2020 Q3: 528.581(+60.5%)
  • 2020 Q4: 484.820 (-8.3%)
  • 2021 Q1: 392.568 (-19%)
  • 2021 Q2: 175.096 (-55%)
  • 2021 Q3: 164.190* (-6.2)

In terms of annual sales I think the outlook is 1.2 million, while next year being the software peak could definitely be another 750K allowing Ring Fit to surpass 4 million on Famitsu and the first fitness game by Nintendo to reach such numbers in Japan. Wii wasn't as popular in Japan managing only 1/3 of Switch's likely lifetime sales; so it's very likely that Ring Fit's legs allow it to end up with over 6 million sales in it's lifetime when everything is said and done.
It will be very interesting how Nintendo handles the sequel or spin-off, but I don't think those would actually hurt the legs of Ring Fit all that much, it's likely going to remain the best fitness game experience on the Switch in the long run and not many other companies are making anything to compete in this area. Fitness Boxing is the only other franchise in the fitness genre that has sold over 2 million world wide.
It be smart for other developers to develop their own peripherals(or make their games compatible with the Ring Con) but it doesn't seem anyone has green-lighted such projects.

This is a gaming experience that you can't really get on the PS or Xbox, making Nintendo entirely unique draw for people looking for an alternative Gym, especially in Asia its a huge draw as we are seeing it dominate not just Japan but also South Korea, Taiwan and China's best selling console game lists.

Banned
What’s happening and I heard Chris got banned, what for? Seem my company has block ResetEra for inappropriate content and I can’t lurk there!
He gets 1 day banned period after having an argument with a mod. The mod then proceeds to post a new guideline for MC thread that makes many regular members there displeased with the mod action after unjustifiably banned Chris which led to massive ban spree to regular members as well. It was stated that Chris and several members there won't return to era permanently.

Things get heated up again after one of the community members on discord revealed the ban was orchestrated by the mod himself and he was seen mocking Chris even before the argument. Then the admin decided to lock the thread and waiting for the mod(Cvxfreak) to respond with an explanation regarding the issue in MC.

Sony fanboys getting so butthurt over Nintendo's domination in Japan they destroy the sales community in their shit forum is honestly the funniest thing I've heard in a while, everytime I think these people can't be more pathetic they manage to surprise me.
God damn us Sony fans. Always ruining the Nintendo weekly jerk off in Japan!

Anyway hiska and Chris are the men! Looking forward to seeing where they go.

Era mods killed lots of community's since last year
They started with wrestling era then Asian era
After that they killed xbox era and pc steam era now Nintendo era joined the list
And im 100% sure sony era will be the next target
They're slowly starting the campaign by trying to shit on every Insomniac games thread
By some users who spams about the mistreatment of the women employee who worked in the company
And they also try to bring that Rivet design topic every time
And they also tried to shit on that wolverine teaser trailer thread same with spider man 2 thread
Anyway I think resetera will be dead soon
And every community will move to there own discord group
The age of old internet forums will end soon
And the discord era will begin

I hate discord. Hope we get a sales dedicated forum (or its back to VGChartz 🤣)

I also can't stand Discord, and Chris has stated his dislike for it as well. Celine just posted her goodbye as well in the "Nintendo software and hardware sales date from 1983 to present" thread.

Let's hope they all come together and create as you suggested a sales dedicated forum.

Nintendo has a 33 months straight NPD winning streak with Switch. It would be safe to say they’re dominating North America aswell as Japan 😝
