Is it just me or does Horror lose all of its appeal once you add a companion NPC

Just thinking back to Silent Hill 2 and Dead Space 3 among others, and I felt that as soon as you get another "Person" following you, the game is no where near scary anymore, is it just me and a fear of being alone in a scary place?

Imagine thinking RE4 is Survival horror

I've not played Siren actually, its on PS3 right? Wonder if its on PS Plus streaming
just the first one as a PS2 Classic, it's on PS4 too.
It's pretty good but the second one is the peak of the series.
The PS3 reboot it's pretty whack in comparison.

Survival horror games your character being alone and isolated is the best but at least NPC is not as bad as co-op which destroys all tension and horror.

One useful tool NPC could be is to make us comfortable having companion but the game take that companion away from which makes the feeling loneliness and isolation that much worst (in good way).

Escort missions can be a drag, yeah, but they don't necessarily kill the scary atmosphere. It's all down to execution. The Siren games filled me with dread the whole time.

Of course once you have a human shield to waste it becomes less scary. Just like in the real world, I should probably get more friends.

Yeah ! I agree , Re4 and 5 too ! Feels more like a action game when your taking care of someone

It doesn’t in general, but few horror games have utilized NPC companions correctly to enhance the horror. Ico is not a horror game, but it had a tense scenario where you had to leave Yorda in a room alone while you went along the castle ramparts, and if you took too long Yorda got captured so game over. More games should split the party so to speak, and make you worry what may/has happened to your only reprieve from isolation.

Another way of handling NPCs in horror games to enhance the horror, is to make them sus af so you're always wondering if they're going to shank you at any time

The escort missions are still scary because i keep thinking how quickly they will kill my companion and then i gotta restart all over. But yes, as soon as its even 2 guys in the same room and you are part of a team, its much more calm mentally. Again, as long as you dont have to babysit him.

That’s a great point, SH2 does a great job when it forces you to leave Maria and then your weapons and all your items to go into a Creepy basement area, now where it fails is that SH2 is easy to avoid enemies and there is barely any down there but the tension was real

Depending on how interesting the character is.
If it's annoying, then you don't don't feel anything about them.

I don’t like npc companies in survival horror games too when they are only there to slow you down, or forced babysitting. I love silent Hill, original resident evil trilogy, all around the survival horror genre,... but please put a Gatling on my hands from the start and don't give me more headaches than needed.

I'm ok with the companion in theory, but what really kills the mood is when you give me a gun and a bunch of ammo, or whatever powerful weapon the game offers. I have no reason to be afraid of anything I can kill.

The appeal of horror games/movies for me is just the vibe of them, they are never scary to me; adding companions/coop doesn't change the vibe for me.
A friend of mine is the same as you though, coop is the only way he'd play through dead space 3 at all.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
i mean yea, but i always wanted a horror game with companions together, like playable ones from start to end.

A Swat + phasmaphobia game would be pretty cool

I never liked CPU NPCs following you around in general. It's more about them distracting and annoying you than making you feel safer.

Edit

Yes there is real life support to be found in ai companions that could lessen the stress.

Always hated A.I companions. The fuckers are always doing dumb shit and getting in the way.

For me, quite underwhelming series, sightjacking took out all the tension. One of worse mechanics for horror game.
One of the best mechanics i would argue, giving you a look on the monsters perspective. It doesn't even give you the exact location but it teases you with what is around the corner, coupled with a map that you have to read (instead of just giving you your exact location), the games really focus on the loop of replaying surival horror games.

For some reason, Haunting Ground absolutely terrified me. I think it was because Fiona was just so much more vulnerable than most other protagonists in horror / survival games at the time.

She had Hewie to help get out of scrapes, but ... he was still just a dog, and could get knocked about, too! Such an excellent game.

EDIT: I was reminded of another game that came out around the same time, called Rule of Rose. I was wondering why I never played it, and just discovered that it was cancelled in the UK, due to moral panic. Ironic, given that the game itself is set in England ...

Absolutely, because you're no longer alone. That's not to say there aren't cooperative games that can't have scary moments and tension, but they'll never be more frightening than a solo horror campaign. You alone with an in-game avatar and hostile environment made more intimidating by the dark recesses of your imagination.

It's all subjective, glad you liked the games. I wanted to like them, setting and everything else is great, but sightjacking just didn't click with me.

Yes you're right. It does become less scary but no it doesn't lose all scariness. I actually feel a sigh of relief after you have been all alone and finally you meet an npc who tags with you for a short while.

I can't speak to Siren 1 & 2 though I heard the 1st is notoriously difficult. Blood Curse, the one made for PS3, that game is straight up terrifying and pretty damn solid. Controls are kinda wonky but that game will put you on edge like nobodies business. It's only streaming for Blood Curse but the PS2 games are available for download on ps4/ps5.

Only the first one IIRC, the second one has never been on PS2 classics and is only jpn and pal, never published properly on NA.

I appreciated that one stray bullet will kill your companion in Silent Hill 2. The retarded AI running in front of you added to the tension.

Boil down what survivor horror actually is with bullet points.
Do not ignore something if the other has it and goes against your agenda, otherwise it's null and void.
