Or how about the government works on real issues like making sure people don't have to be at the mercy of crappy jobs to live comfortably.

Or we can just whine at technological progress and bring back horse drawn carriages. What about all those lost jobs!

This. Automation is unstoppable.

I'm still confused how it knows whose picking up the item. Or what if you grab something and hand it to someone else.

your phone is your passport. Your app is used on your phone to log you into the store, notice the electronic entry barriers that you have to pass to get into the shopping area, any product that leaves the shelf within the range of your body, phone proximity appears to log your purchase as soon as it leaves the shelf.

So if I'm standing in front of the shelf but someone beside me grabs a product in front of me how does it know who grabbed the product?

Not sure yet. maybe you're instructed first time in to be deliberate and at least a person apart when picking? I don't know exactly but I'm sure it's worked out along the lines using your phone app as a proximity sensor in conjunction with the other cameras and sensors throughout the shelves and store.

I find any complain about automation ironic in a deeply capitalistic society like the USA. You can't have your cake and eat it too – that "got mine, fuck you" mentality is precisely why a robot doing it better, faster and cheaper is replacing a human.

The problem here isn't automation, but the very foundations of a society that place value in the wrong place.

What they're branding as Just Walk Out technology is essentially using autonomous car sensors to pick up 3d data of whats happening in every corner of the environment -with a million checks in place- so they can see whos holding what and with which phone for every moment until you exit the store.

My thought as well.

Like if I'm standing next to someone who takes an item, how does it know just based on gps data?

Another thought. What if someone hands their phone to a friend who turns it off and puts it inside a led lined pocket (not stealing so they can't do anything) then walks behind someone going past the point of no return. Carrying an item the system thinks belongs to the person in front.

Basically the same technique shitheads do when they walk behind someone to get past train ticket barriers.

I feel like I could write an entire thesis on Amazon Go and it's role in the larger conversation on mass automation/decline of the middle class/humanity evolving past manual labor/universal income/socialism vs capitalism. The ramifications of it are already massive and that's just from a damn 3-minute youtube video.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
How would we fund the universal basic income when fewer and fewer people are working?

This thread seems sadly ok with the trend of consolidating wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people.

The beauty of taxation is that you can tax that wealth, even if less people hold it, and redistribute it.

How is this going to work if you grocery shop with your family?

What if i train my kids to piggy back on other adults? lol

What if a group of women all wearing burkas individually walk in?

What if you take something out of the container, eat it, and then put the container back on the shelf?

Fucking honestly. That people are so brainwashed as to think menial jobs unrelated to your life passions are a good thing is totally beyond me.
