I guess I should elaborate on what I said.

Yes I know there is some porn available on current VR platforms, but those are afterthoughts, that's not what I was talking about. I was talking about hardware that is designed with the use for interactive virtual sex encounters as one of it's design goals, and software that is made to take full advantage of those features.
You make a platform like that, and it will sell. And other software and games on that platform will also sell. Because now the platform itself becomes a must get, and people will tell you they are buying it for the games and not the VR sex. But they will be lying just like the people who said they bought Playboy "for the articles".

But companies like Facebook, Sony, and Apple, are too image conscious to do something like that. So it will end up being some new start-up that eventually will pull this off.
Oh, I see. No, in that case we're not there yet. And yes, the big corporations won't do it so I don't know who will at this point. It's not cheap to develop a VR helmet either.

It's started showing up at cex in the UK so looks like people are already getting bored, especially when you think it's not sold anywhere near what the ps5 will have sold.

Gonna keep an eye on them and see if the price drops, might pick one up second hand to try out but need to make sure that exchange price is closer to the cost of buying.

There is always an early 2nd hand market for VR headsets, many people can't cope with VR (motion sickness mainly) and sell them.

You'd think people would know by now, if they can handle it or not...but that's all good. Will help drive the price down second hand.

Unfortunately the pressure to keep growing faster than the alternatives will dictate software support and investment. Some companies will have the ability to take the risk re spending money to grow the market and others won't.

I’d love to see VR become the next big thing because it would solve the issue of bigger devs not thinking it’s worth the risk to jump in properly.
I don’t want regular gaming to disappear completely though. Not sure how that can be solved. Can there be two equally big gaming markets?
I have nearly zero interest in AAA games. AAA games have become very boring experiences in the last decade. Playing them feels mostly like a chore.
As long as there is a steady flow of indies (for VR or not), I'm happy.

What type of games do you play? Could you list some favorites?

The last decade means the whole last console generation, it’s not my favorite generation but we’ve seen tons of big and great AAA titles since 2013.

I certainly have some smaller studio favorites too during that period though; Metroid Dread, Ori 1+2, Hollow Knight, The Witness, Inside, Resogun, No Man’s Sky, The Ascent, Hi-Fi Rush, Legend of Grimrock 2, Monster Boy, plus on VR Moss 1 and 2, and a couple more. But excluding all AAA games since 2013 would’ve been horrible.

That's already available. People still aren't buying VR.

People aren't going to buy it until it's not a massive gadget strapped to your face.
I mean even if VR headsets are as small as a pair of glasses I'd still wager VR still not being not appealing to the masses. We saw this with 3D and most people either didn't like the effect for discomfort, or like wearing accessories to enjoy their entertainment.

I don’t think VR can be compared to 3D movies. I loved 3D movies but tbh the only difference from regular movies was a 3D picture. VR in games is a whole other level of awesomeness compared to regular games. Comparing sim racing in VR with a wheel to playing on a regular TV with a controller is a night and day difference, impossible to even understand without trying.
Problem is, the masses won’t try it when there are no demo stations in stores and when the total cost is as high as it is right now.

The thing is.. as immersive VR can be its not going to be for everyone. And for the average person(s) VR is never going to be as easy pick up and enjoy, nor anywhere near as comfortable as just sitting down and playing on a normal 2D screen. And therein lies the problem.

And you're going to have to pay a significant amount extra for that luxury, with a small selection of titles.

Roguelites, strategy, simulation, puzzles, platformers, etc.

For me that’s the padding between bigger releases, it’s why I like Gamepass/PS+ so much, perfect to make the waiting less problematic. But it’s all a matter of taste of course. Worst new thing for me in the AAA space is the hand holding. Absolutely hate it. Let me play or make a cutscene instead.

Yeah you’re probably right. It’s a frustrating situation really for anyone who has seen what VR could bring.

Most people did 6 years ago. Was a great time to be in VR lots of excitement and enthusiasm and now it's gone for some reason.

Now people think a headset has to sell several million every year to be a success.

But all headsets really need to sell is 500,000 a quarter, that means 2M a year, and 10M in 5 years. That sounds like a more realistic goal to me then trying to sell 40M headsets in a year like a Samsung Galaxy 23.

I expect Sony to sell these numbers. Let us assume that the numbers from the now locked thread were true and Sony sold 270,000 in 1 month. That means they are very likely to sell more than 500,000 this quarter.

If they do the same the next 3 quarters they will sell more than 2M VR headsets by years end. If they do that for the next 5 years they will have sold more than 10M. Double their previous attempt.

I think many people have unrealistic expectations because of Meta being lucky ONE time, and at what cost?

Your 500,000 a quarter number is what I too would assume to be success in the VR space. If people thought VR headsets were going to sell 40M per headset, that's insane!

You, me, and everyone on GAF knew no VR headset would sell at the speed that the PS5 has sold. That's not the base line.
