Gunstar Super Heroes: IGN review

http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/660/660467p1.html

October 21, 2005 - With the handheld market quickly evolving with better, faster, more powerful hardware, it's been a very long time since Game Boy Advance developers have "wowed" us. Even though Game Boy Advance hardware is still as limiting as it's been since it was created nearly a half decade ago, gamer expectations are continuing to rise, and it's going to take something really, truly special on the GBA to make us sit up and say, "Holy crap!"

That's exactly what Gunstar Super Heroes does. This is old-school run/jump/blasting action, but with a high level of energy thanks to the development team's bells-and-whistles presentation. This is a GBA game that pulls off every sprite trick in the book to wow the gamer, pushing the handheld hardware every which way possible. But even though a lot of the focus was put on graphic techniques, gameplay doesn't sit on the sideline -- Gunstar Super Heroes is enormously fun with a game structure that throws a whole lot of variety at the gamer. This game is a huge blast to play.

Closing Comments
Treasure really hit the nail on the head with Gunstar Super Heroes. Though I'm inexperienced with the first game in the series, I'm content to say that this game is a hell of a sequel that really shows the GBA system in a great light during the handheld's Autumn Years. This fantastic action game pushes the GBA as hard as it can, all the while offering some seriously tight and fun gameplay throughout the special effects display.

out of 10 click here for ratings guideGet Ratings Information
8.0 Presentation
The story's not much more than talking head cutscenes. But who cares, the sheer amount of variety in level design is the real key here.
9.0 Graphics
You won't find a more energetic action game that pushes the GBA as hard as this one. Old school techniques are still flashy and impressive in this day and age.
8.0 Sound
Appropriate tunes follow the energized action, with the occasional voice speaking up during cutscenes.
9.0 Gameplay
The game jumps all over the place from side-scrolling "Contra" gameplay to top-down shooter. The occasional challenges aren't as fun as others, but the majority is a blast.
7.5 Lasting Appeal
The game has a beginning and end, but it's a solid length that's extended with time trial challenges. Shame there's no two player cooperative mode.
9.0 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

FYI, Craig didn't play the original. Curious what ToastyFrog, chespace, and Kobun think of the final version.

All I can say for it is that there are some very jaded people out there that can't judge a good game when they see it.

That said, I hope we see further adventures in the world of Gunstar. GIMME MY GUN PORN.

Cool, got mine pre-ordered but I'm glad it's getting good reviews.

Slightly off-topic but Treasure related. I thought I heard they are making Sin & Punishment 2 for Revolution. Can anyone confirm?

It's a game that really makes me remember those great 16-Bit days. When the only way I could get new game information was to wait patiently for the new issue of GamePlayers (and others -- GP was my personal favorite) When Genesis games came in plastic cases!

Definitely buy this if you love videogames. Period.

The fact that the reviewer never played the first installment makes me wonder what are really the differences between both of them though. Can you still throw enemies? What are the good and the cons of the new weapon system? Soundtrack? Are there many cheap hits as in Astro Boy?

While I'm glad that it got such a high score (and that I have it on pre-order), the review fails to answer a lot of questions hardcore Gunstar Heroes fans really want to know.

This sounds like a fun game and the gameplay clip at IGN seemed to back this up. However I'm not sure if I'm good at these types of games, i.e. is it a difficult game? To give some context, I purchased Mega Man Zero back in the day, but I only got about halfway through it and haven't played it since. I kept dying over and over at the same boss battle and due to frustration with this part of the game I moved on to playing other games. I'll go back to MMZ eventually to try and finish it (after all I've already paid for the game so I might as well try to get my money's worth out of it), but I'm afraid that this is how Gunstars Super Heroes might be (rightly or wrongly I get the impression that most Treasure games are for hardcore gaming set). I don't mind a challenge but there's a limit to what I'll endure :p

a rumor based on an off handed comment in a recent interview. Treasure are not currently making a sequel to S&P, but some interest was expressed.

I've seen a friend playing thgouth it.
It's good but rather short and sometimes too chaotic.
Tons of good ideas and lots of diversity, though: There's an afterburner tribute sub-chapter and even a thunderblade (the top down sections)inspired level, without the zooming in & out though
Technically impressive for a GBA game, but i wonder why not release it for DS at this point.
Overall i think it lacks some solidity and it's not too "well constructed".
Good, but I think the original was better in many ways and i think Astroboy too is a better game overall.

I so expected to see a 6.5/10.

But I'm glad to see that I'm pleasantly surprised.

I was gonna pick this one up day 1 anyway, but this gives me all the more incentive to salivate.

We hardly known anything of the Revolutions games anyway so I doubt anyone here could confirm a title like that; Though the Rev Controller would be suited down to a tee for a Sin & Punishment Sequel.
