GOG News and Updates 2011

And you'd consider that as a normal behaviour?
I routinely repurchase games I already own on disc, so long as it's available on GOG or Steam. Didn't think twice about picking up the Infinity Engine stuff.

God I love throwing away old discs and books. Digital Distribution is lovely.

I do the same thing. Once I get a downloadable version of a game I usually donate the physical copy to Goodwill or something.

Uh oh. I'm severely tempted to buy all those D&D games. I missed out on all of these games, but was able to play the first Baldur's Gate a few years ago. I've also just recently started playing D&D.

The problem is I've got way too big of a backlog, plus all the new games coming out this fall/winter. Decisions, decisions...

Neverwinter Nights is the only game of the bunch I haven't played? Game is pretty trash right?

It's okay...but it's probably my least favorite Bioware game. I think the second Neverwinter Nights is a vastly improved experience.

The 2 expansions are pretty good, but yeah, the OC isn't that great. It's still worth a pickup though, if you haven't played it before.

I really enjoyed Hordes of the Underdark (the 2nd expansion) since it had that never-ending dungeon sense (down and down we go).

It's pretty bad compared to the Baldur's Gates. Although I've never played the expansion packs. Going from a party of 6 to 2, it's pretty bad.

I'm playing through BG1 in Tutu again now, and damn, Neverwinter Nights sucked compared to these games. And I'm not even into BG2 yet!

So, maybe I should just pick up the last two games that I didn't have before this sale...
And to be honest, this might be the best sale ever. I mean it's a sale of the best games ever pretty much.

and Minsc, have you ever considered making that gog.com logo in the first post into a link to the site?

Modules are supposed to make that better I believe, and the expansions were well received. Core game's pretty weak though, yeah.

Think I'm going to pick up ToEE and Demon Stone.

RTSs are not my favorite genre, and I already have several sitting in my backlog that I'm not even that excited to get to. Unless there's some compelling reason to get Dragonshard I'll pass on it.

And I already have NWN on disc and it's nowhere near the pain to install and get working as the infinity engine games so not worth double dipping. And I don't even like it that much. I really should try the xp's though, people say they get better.

Ended up picking up all of them. The difference between what I was 100 percent was going to get and what I was on the fence about was about 3 dollars, so I knocked some sense into myself and picked up the other 2.

Then I went back and got DK2 also... heh.

Hordes of the Underdark was a really fun expansion and worth the low price of admission on its own. If you're looking for a story driven D&D game that takes place in some interesting places then you can do much worst. However it's much more linear and smaller in scope than BG2, so I'd never recommend buying it over that game or Planescape if you haven't been through them yet.

So it seems they are close to 6 million unique downloads. The user who makes the 6.000.000th download gets every game in GOG for free and all the other members get Broken Sword Director's Cut for free (2 days limit).
Not bad!

they're still 140k downloads off. but the counter will keep accelerating as it gets closer. it's at 25 downloads per minute now, it was at 16 when it started. pretty good

am I reading it right, there has only been 6 million downloads from GoG? That puts the whole revenue of the store at a maximum of $600 million? :(

60 million.

My guess is real revenue is around 20 million. Free downloads and $6 games, along with sales.

That said, the rights they got are probably pretty cheap so it's profitable.

I've purchased a number of GOG games that i've yet to download even once, so the actual number of sales may be higher.

Unfortunately, it seems to be impossible to tell exactly when that six-millionth is actually going to happen. The counter moves at a constant rate. There's no way people are downloading at a constant rate. ):

I was very surprised. I knew it'd be a relatively small shop, but I had no idea it would be his small.

I used to be in the "haven't downloaded" group but after last year's stunt I rapidly downloaded all my games and the manuals to an external hdd. And mirrored that. There may be a couple games in my account I haven't pulled but I'm ready for GOG-death.

Yeah, its definitely got some growing to do! You can see they were off to a relatively slow start compared to more recent months, though that peaks with the holiday sale where the entire site was on sale, so it's probably a little deceiving. Wasn't there some PR a while back that had them pegged as one of the bigger non-Steam DD stores too? Maybe I'm mixing that up.

I'd still like to think the more popular titles on GOG (Fallout, BG, Torment) are selling in the 100,000+ range before the big drop to the ones few people care about like Atlantis which must sell very poorly. However, we know The Witcher 2 (highly ranked on GOG's sales sorting) sold ~1M worldwide, with around a 80/20 retail/DD breakdown, so maybe it's more like only 50,000 for the bestselling games on GOG if combined DD sales for TW2 on all services including GOG were ~200k. The 6 million total is also less impressive when you take in to account that all the bestselling titles are the free ones, so you have to give maybe (number out of a hat) ~100k-200k downloads to each of the 7 free titles totaling say ~1 million of the 6 million downloads. Would also be interesting if we had a number from Steam to put it in perspective, even if it was just rounded to the nearest 100 million(?). :)

In addition, we mentioned that the user who will make the 6 millionth download will receive the whole GOG.com catalogue for free! It was not a prank and the user who should start "wrestling" with his virtual shelf full of awesome classics is Dotur who downloaded Icewind Dale 2 exactly on 2011-09-29 at 07:39:43 EDT. Congratulations! We'll send you the gift certificate with all the games from the catalogue.

Lucky bastard!

Finally, at least one person with a gaming backlog bigger than mine!

I missed out on Broken Sword. :(

Are any of the games this weekend any good? I have all the empire earths but nothing else. Are the Lords of Magic/Realms any good? Thanks. And ya, I'm also guilty of not downloading all the games I've purchased. :( Some are really long!
