GOG News and Updates 2011

I missed out on Broken Sword. :(

Are any of the games this weekend any good? I have all the empire earths but nothing else. Are the Lords of Magic/Realms any good? Thanks. And ya, I'm also guilty of not downloading all the games I've purchased. :( Some are really long!
I bought Lord of the Realm: Royal Edition. It seems to be a very nice game, though only 5 minute in the game :D I always thought the game to be turn based, its being RTS intrigued me (Battle at least), the overall game seems to be very similar to master of magic though.

I also wanted to get the Pinball game, but short of money.
I had bought Ground Control II some years ago, and sold it after playing it like an hour, didn't click with me at all.
Empire Earth 2 is a very good game too, specially since Age of Empires or Rise of Nations aren't available on the store.

Would also be interesting if we had a number from Steam to put it in perspective
Forbes estimate was at least 2 billion in revenue for the last year I believe, probably even higher now, some orders of magnitude higher as long as revenue is considered, and probably at least an order of magnitude for the sheer number of downloads.

I was very surprised. I knew it'd be a relatively small shop, but I had no idea it would be his small.
I am now hurt actually :(

60 million.

My guess is real revenue is around 20 million. Free downloads and $6 games, along with sales.

gog shot themselves in the foot revealing this tiny number of downloads tbh. don't think I can buy anymore games there now knowing it's so small. IMO
ha, what?!

Actually, after reviewing my other free options, I just bought Pinball Gold Pack. Though, I am a bit disappointed, as it seems that this version excludes a lot of music from the CD version (and doesn't have usual gog extra goodies, art, manual, etc)

Hmmm. Buy now because I have great memories of it, or hold out in the hope that 3000 or 4 are on the way, given I've never played those two? Decisions, decisions...

At last another EA game....Simcity 2000!

Nice little surprise. I remember playing a lot of that game when it came out, but I can't say how it faired against SimCity 3000 and the other entries any more, whether or not it was the favorite. I remember SimCity 3000 being really impressive for the SVGA graphics at the time. 2000 looks a bit dated now, even more than RollerCoaster Tycoon (which makes sense looking at the release dates, 1995 vs 1999).

Hope this is a sign of them getting my favorite sim classic soon...SimTower. Other honorable mentions: SimAnt and SimGolf.

I hope they do get the later SimCity's too just because I've never actually played them. 2000 was my last one, but it's a goodie.

Nothing against Sim City, but it's not really my genre.
I hope to see System Shock II or Blade Runner, sooner or later...

Isn't Blade Runner in greater licensing limbo than even the System Shocks? I doubt we'll ever see it.

I think everything after SimCity 2000 was just a graphics upgrade, and often a machine destroying one at that. It's probably the best in the series. It's got the right balance of complexity to ease of use and learning how to play. So much fun!

I suspect there's other issues with SimTower, given it's Yoot Saito's brainchild, and was only republished by Maxis. Which makes me wonder if there's ever a possibility of Yoot Tower.

On sales talk, I would imagine that it would be relatively easy to keep GOG afloat, due to the nature of their business that depends on gamers discovering old games.

They shouldn't need to worry about accounting for fluctuations in profits due to new games being released, so budgeting spending should be straight forward.

Or this may just be me putting a positive spin on it.

Hmm, I remember playing SC2K as a kid, but now that I have SC3K and SC4 on my system, I'm not so sure revisiting SC2K is worth it.

Hmm, I might still buy it though.

I'm hoping for a Sim Earth release one day. I spent so much time playing it as a kid despite the fact that I never knew what the heck I was doing. Just watching my sentient plants devour and pollute the planet.

oh wow. pod fucking gold. AWESOME

isn't it just warnerbrothers for the ip, and ea for the game? seems pretty straightforward. aka. it will never come to gog. hehe

no no, only stupid stuff.

i remember pod. my old ibm mmx pc came bundled with it and a bunch of other good software (including mechwarrior 2!). fun little racer though, and tough. has one hell of a setting.

Anyone remember Jones in the Fast Lane? I want that on GoG so bad.

Loved that game so much. It baffles me really how much me and my friends loved it when we were younger. I look back and think of a younger me playing a life/work time simulator like that, and I wonder what I was thinking.

You can play a flash version of it there. No CD version voice over though :(

Oh the nostalgia.

Damn, and I thought they got rid of the sliding scale sale bullcrap, and here they've made it worse. Ugh.
what's the problem with it? getting a better deal the more you already own, or the more you buy is pretty great.

More like you get a worse deal the less games you buy, which makes me want to buy nothing.

Yea because GOG's prices are so outrageous that they need a sale in the first place. Get a grip.

any impressions of the Dark Reign games?

The first one is a really solid game with some great AI. I didn't really dig the second one. It was one of those early 3d RTS games that didn't understand how to handle the camera so you are constantly fidgeting with the view instead of actually playing the game.

Obviously quality of the offer matters but that slider made the D&D games a steal.

Yeah, I ended up buying all of them because the ones I was half-interested in were only an extra couple of bucks each. I was going to get ID I & II, BG I & II etc., and I already had Plansescape and Neverwinter Nights, so I just went all out, haha.

I loved the scaling sale prices that time because it took into account that I already owned Planescape and Neverwinter Nights, something that I wish Steam sales would do when a pack goes on sale that I own half the games in.

I also bought Lords of the Realm Gold (1 and 2). I'd totally forgotten that game existed until it went on sale. I looked up some video of LotR II and had a huge nostalgia trip. I'd remembered the game vaguely, but had forgotten what it was called. I played the crap out of it when I was a kid, so I figured $3 for some nostalgia would be worth it.

Could it be...

...Little Big Adventure?

(aka Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure and Twinsen's Odyssey for Americans)

I was reading in the GoG.com forums that there have been rumblings of a downloadable version of both games in the works. If LBA is coming to GoG, I'll be excited, especially if they bundle both games together. I have Twinsen's Odyssey, but I really want to finally play and beat the first one. I played it back in high school, but I never had the time to complete it.

I remember playing LBA when I was a kid, but due to a bug or something (IIRC the walkthrough said I should talk to a prostitute to progress but I was unable to do so) I've never finished it. :( I would love to replay the game, especially if they manage to make it run on modern PC.

LBA2 is the best adventure game ever made. Easily.

I have played it and beaten it more times than I care to remember and could easily give it another playthrough right now. Make it happen GOG.

I thought the second one was a lot of fun in big skirmish matches... at the time. It's been a while.

God I hope so. I've been wanting to play the full game ever since I tried the demo as a kid.

LBA was the first game I thought of when I heard of GOG.com, so I'm really pumped that it's coming soon :D

...when LittleBigPlanet was first announced, I remember being really excited thinking that it was gonna be a sequel :(
