GOG News and Updates 2011

I really hope that, with GOG and EA as BFF's, that they put some classic Need for Speed titles up. Porsche Unleashed would be awesome.

Now you've gone and done it! There's a seed of hope for this to happen that I just know will be crushed.

Not the best place to ask this but did anyone here buy NWN from GOG and requested a Multiplayer key? How long did it take? A friend and I both bought a copy and we were pretty disappointed that you need to request a cd-key via email/support request. It's a bit unprofessional when you have a competitor like steam that is able to deliver unique keys through their client.

They posted about having an upcoming like stream conference talking about various things with Witcher 2 as well what's coming for GOG the rest of this year and maybe next year. What are the odds they'll announce a new publisher of games to sell? (I've been patiently awaiting LucasArts)

Odds are they're going to announce that they have a new, super secret, unnamed publisher on board, and the week after that they're going to start a three day countdown to reveal the name of the new publisher, with two new releases and six other mysterious titles from that publisher in coming weeks.

A few surprises today:

New release: Wing Commander 3 (with lots of goodies)

Midweek sale (70% off for the whole bundle, 50% off each individual title), ends Friday:

Alien Nations
AquaNox
AquaNox 2: Revelation
Chaser
Dark Fall 2: Lights Out
Dark Fall: The Journal
Gothic 2 Gold Edition
Guild Gold Edition, The
Nations Gold Edition, The
Neighbours From Hell Compilation
Painkiller Black Edition
Panzer Elite Special Edition
Spellforce 2: Dragon Storm
Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars
Spellforce Platinum

They're also plugging their fall conference, although the blurb reads like it's more Witcher 2 2.0 + consoles discussion rather than GoG. Still, they like to occasionally sneak out announcements when no-one's looking.

The only one of the WC books I actually own!

Seeing the mention of Prophecy in the wikipedia article made me think: Didn't prophecy have a *free* expansion? Surely we can, at least, hope for that?

A stand-alone expansion pack, Secret Operations, was released by Origin in 1998; most notably, it was released solely over the Internet and for no charge, though the large initial file challenged the dial-up connections of that day. Secret Operations was later released for sale in combination with Prophecy in the "Wing Commander: Prophecy - Gold" package.

So as a newbie to WC series, Should I play 1+2 or Prophecy before delving into 3? Also 3 looks incredibly good on those screenshots.

I'd say it would help to play the old stuff first. It's a continuing story, after all.

..and I'll get right on that as soon as GOG figures out how to include the expansions for WC1/2.

Man wc3 brings back some awesome memories. Watching the mission cutscenes on youtube is a blast. Why did fully acted cutscenes in video games die. Damn that uncanny valley.

Because they were hilariously bad when performed by unknown actors (see: Warhawk on the PSone) and obscenely expensive when performed by name actors (WC3). Not really an element of videogames I miss. Ever.

I can see that it would only function in a small subset of genres, but for games where characters themselves are disconnected from ingame play it definitely works and I'd like to see it more. I guess RA3 (despite the game being terrible) is the most recent example, was a ton of fun there too.

Nox is a pretty good time! I have no idea how I missed this one the first time around.

Absolutely, game is a blast, awesome replayability too since the story changes for each class. If you look up how to use the console you can also force it into letting you play unintended class/story combinations as well for extra funny.

You missed the MP though, which is a shame. Unless there have been other action-RPG/Diablo clones that do FPS-style MP modes (CTF, (T)DM, KOTH) instead of co-op adventure with random PVP. Nox MP was a blast.

Star Control 3 released today, for $5.99. Those puppets are the things of nightmares (such a shame coming from the great 2D animated portraits in SC2)!

Despite loving Star Control 2, I've managed to stay clear of the third, so maybe I'll grab it on sale one day to see just what I missed. I don't think it can be as sharp a decline to the series' quality as MoO 3 was, maybe it'll even surprise me. If nothing else, hopefully the music is half as good as Star Control 2.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I guess it was cool at the time to see some (graphically) updated melee action in 640x480 but the puppetry was pretty bad, as was the voice acting and the music was nowhere near as memorable as the second. Maybe someone has videos from it on YT you can use to save your time and dollars.

i recommend against buying SC3. If youve never played SC2, dont buy it because it will spoil the entire plot and story of SC2. If you have played SC2, dont buy it because it will make you cry.

There's also Privateer (on GoG), Armada and Academy. Privateer's a more Elite-like experience, but roughly fits chronologically after WC2. However, it's completely independent from the main-line series.

I'm trying to remember Armada and Academy, I'm getting a mental block. I think one was multiplayer, and the other was a mission designer? Or vice-versa? Or something?

There's also Privateer 2, although that's not *strictly* a Wing Commander game (at least, it's not really mentioned on the box, and I noticed no mention of any of the events of the prior games during what I played of it)

Huh. One of the most interesting quirks of GOG for me is that sometimes they release games (in this case Star Control 3) that I think I haven't ever heard of, then I click on the screenshots and see something I've quite clearly played before. I think I must have spent too much of the 90s drunk.

Armada is basically Star Control 1 meets Wing Commander. I think it was the first WC game to transition to 3D. I didn't think it was particularly worth playing as a lot of the draw of WC is the story, and Armada basically had none.

Academy is basically a mission generator for WC2. Also not worth it.

As for Star Control 3, it's not terrible. It's no SC2 but I played SC3 a few years before 2, didn't feel like the plot was spoiled in any meaningful way, and had a sorta OK time with it. It's not great and I want to say there are some BS dead-ends that can end the game for you but gamefaqs should fix that. The game received overly-negative attention IMO due to fanboy mentality to SC2. It's certainly no MoO3.

While we're talking about Wing Commander, I'd like to ask for some joystick recommendations. I have a Thrustmaster Hotas X that I bought for Afterburner Climax on the PS3, but Dosbox is having trouble recognising it (System Shock 1 doesn't see it at all for the hacking sections). What's a good mid-end joystick to play Privateer (and Open FreeSpace; my Hotas X feels oddly loose in FS2)? And just for kicks, what's a good high-end joystick that Dosbox will recognise?

I read some good things about the CH Fighterstick, but anyone have some hands-on experience with one?

A Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 if you can find one.

How's Overseer? Missed that one back in the days.

Imo it's the best by far. Yes PD had the different paths and all, but I found it very poorly paced and a bit uninteresting. Overseer has the best puzzles/story and a great end game.

Wow, I skip the thread and WC3 is out?!

I hope they release WC4 with the DVD quality cutscenes. I've always wanted to track down that disc, but even better if I can just buy it for 6 bucks.

"New" release: ArmA: Cold War Assault.

It's Operation Flashpoint, which they had on GoG before but had to pull - I don't recall why?

Anyone who had Flashpoint now has it instead.

Codemasters IP nonsense meant it had to be taken down as it was.

they had to take it down because bohemia owned the game content (maybe not including the last expansion made by codemasters), and codemasters the ip.

I'm kind of annoyed they just translated all the operation flashpoint version sales into arma cold war assault now. I wanted to have BOTH OF THEM in my gog library. hehe. of course, I still have them both separately, on the gog harddrive. but not on the site.

No release today, 'some surprises' in the conference.

Clearly the surprises can't be of the "and it's available NOW" nature. Hopefully it's more news on EA addons.

Edit: Although, that said, does them updating an existing game count as a 'new release'?

Could go either way I think, Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror wasn't announced in the standard "New Release:" format that new releases are when Broken Sword Director's Cut was updated, however when Betrayal in Antara was added to Betrayal at Krondor and turned in to the Betrayal at Krondor Pack, it was labeled as a "New Release:".

Whatever the surprises are today, I agree they seem more low-key. I do hope GOG is getting closer to signing another publisher for next year, because looking back at this year's releases, without getting EA, it would have been a pretty lackluster year.
