GOG News and Updates 2011

Hrm, fair enough. To be honest, it's been ages since I've played either so I can't remember how they played. 3 was a huge time sink though... man...

got homm 5 pack earlier, so i'm interested in might and magic. does anyone know what kinda rpg it is. And 7 or 8 which is better in terms of gameplay and content?

They are first person dungeon crawls with the focus on character development and loot. Great games if you are into min maxing your party into a group of killers. 7 is better then 8.

I have all of those M&M games (except Heroes Chronicles) on disc but I've had trouble getting some of them to run in Vista in the past. Does gog update the games in any way to ensure their compatibility?
Anybody?

You can click on the game on GoG's website and at the top with the game description under the release date, it lists which OS the game is compatible with and GoG is very good about making sure this is tested and accurate. Everyone of the M&M games in this package say they are compatible with Vista so you should be good.

Wow, how come Rollercoaster Tycoon is the best selling game right now? It's unplayable, the UI is worse than TTD which came out before it and the game is a buggy mess (changing resolution by itself, tells me I have to place an entrance when I already have, some trees can be deleted and some can't). Really regret spending $6 on it now and hope that Theme Park will come out with the next batch of EA games.

On the other hand, HOMM3 is awesome!

It's one of the greatest sim games of all time and it runs fine, apparently, on everything that isn't Win 7 x64.

Compatibility Mode in Win 7 should work around the issue, should it not? I played the old disc based version in Compatibility Mode and it worked... unless there is something else at work in the software.

EDIT: Scratch that, it just works. I just bought it and I am using Windows 7 x64 and it just runs fine. I didn't even have to use Compatibility Mode... sure, it makes your taskbar disappear, but that is barely a problem when you get to play Rollercoaster Tycoon! The taskbar comes back after you close the program.

Oh! Well, good. I haven't picked it up yet because I need to, like, be able to go to work and stuff instead of sitting at my computer playing RCT in my underwear

Yeah... hours blow past me when I play it, so I need to be extra careful in my time keeping.

Very similar. Gameplay is pretty much identical? Art, etc. is different obv
Err no, aside from the obvious difference that HOMM is entirely turn-based, it also includes a huge strategy component that is missing from King's Bounty. In HOMM you have to acquire and manage resources other than gold, develop your starting castle, capture castles, towns, mines etc. to expand your territory, and hire multiple heroes and split your armies amongst them so as to keep your ever-expanding territory defended from enemy attacks. While in King's Bounty you're pretty much just one guy running back and forth solving quests for people while amassing an army. The battle systems are mostly identical, though.

RCT runs totally fine for me, played it for a few hours. Taskbar doesn't even disappear (not even briefly)! Plays windowed or fullscreen equally well, I just run it windowed now, you can easily drag the window out to be whatever size you want to, which is nice.

The GOG version of RCT works fine for me in Win 7 64.

The only issue I have with it is that the old hack to use custom screen resolutions only works with the retail release. I guess I can just use windowed mode but oh god I hate windowed modes.

Yeah, King's Bounty is the RPG, HoMM the strategy game. That's basically how it works. I like HoMM more, because it's got more depth and because I love strategy games...

Weird... no matter the setting I choose, my taskbar will disappear. Windowed is the biggest culprit, especially if I start the game in windowed mode. Everything just disappears, but that is a small price to pay to be able to play Rollercoaster Tycoon. I tend to play mine in fullscreen anyway, even though I have massive borders...

Regardless though, the great news is that you can play RCT just fine on Windows 7 x64! Hurray for all us x64 users!

Absolutely. RCT2 and RCT3 works okay but it sucked that my RCT disk wouldn't work. It's so nice to finally be able to play the game again!

All Zork games are 40% off!

Buy Grand Inquisitor people. It's a masterpiece!

I'm toying with whether to pick up RTZ. I won't buy the text games (Not a dislike, but because I'm the very proud owner of a copy of Masterpieces of Infocom!), Zork Nemesis I've owned in the past and really liked so will rebuy for convenience, and Grand Inquisitor's a shoe-in. But RTZ could go either way at the moment. Good job I've got the whole weekend to muse over it.

New release: Crusaders of Might & Magic.

I'm drawing a blank. Anyone?
Here's a tidbit from wikipedia.
The Windows version of the game was intended for simultaneous release with the PlayStation version, targeting the 1999 Christmas season. However, while the PlayStation team had been working on their version for several years, the Windows team was given only 7 months to generate a full-length game's worth of assets and retrofit an existing first-person shooter engine to handle third-person combat.
1 + 1 =

To be fair, I've worked on games with that sort of dev time, and I've worked on games that bullied an engine designed for FPSes into something else (a platformer, most notably!). That said, I don't think I've worked on one that attempted *both*.

Well, engines tend to be more multi purpose capable these days. Lots of DigiPen (or other) mod projects have done creative things with Unreal Engine 2 and Source, including (physics!) platforming and melee combat (though I don't think there are any I'd have paid money for, heh). But I'd think most non indie action RPGs tend to have more than 7 months of development. Maybe indie too, especially if they'd take this third person beat em up thingie route rather than something more like Diablo in nature...

Is Nemesis worth buying too?
How does it compare quality wise to Grand Inquisitor? I know it's darker, but are the puzzles and story good?

Nemesis really doesn't feel very Zorky, but once you get past that, it's a rather good Myst-esque adventure. I'd recommend it.

A review from Andrew Plotkin (who himself is a somewhat notable amateur adventure designer): http://eblong.com/zarf/gamerev/zorknem.html

Some thematic spoilers in that, but not much in the way of specifics.

Nice! I look forward to playing it, I missed out on the RCT games on release, and RCT1 seemed very fun from the few hours I put in it, though I could really use a few keyboard shortcuts for closing windows and activating attractions. Too much time in Sim City / Sim Ant / etc, but they all generally hold up great! I love the 2D graphics, and complexity underneath them. It seems RCT1 is the slight favorite of the series going by the impressions I've read.

Hopefully one day GOG or someone gets Sim Golf too, I remember just playing the demo or a bit of the game when it came out, and seeing the screens from the thread a little ago reminded me how unique a sim it was.

I'm trying to remember that, now. Wasn't it a hybrid golf sim (using a Cannon-Fodder esque viewpoint) and tycoon game? Bizarre combo, but certainly interesting.

On that note: I hadn't thought about EA stuff opening up the possibility of Maxis titles. There's a good few there I'd like to play again. And I wonder if GoG would be amenable to releasing Yoot Tower.

Yes! Been waiting for this to pop up since RCT1.

I remember I had a ton of fun playing the Six Flags parks right after visiting them.

Crusaders of Might and Magic is a hilariously bad game that I spent entirely too much time on back in the day. I actually beat it. The whole world seems to be one long canyon, because they couldn't really do an open world. Can't say I'd recommend it, but seeing it on GOG does bring back memories.

Sim Golf was great. Not only was the sim part fun, but I actually enjoyed playing golf on the courses I created. There needs to be more sim games on GOG overall. Crossing my fingers for SimCity 2000 at some point.

I played a lot of Might and Magic VII these last few days after someone mentioned the game on GAF. Brought back a lot of good memories. I know it is an abomination, but I sort of wonder if M&MIX will ever make its way onto GOG. That is the only "modern" game from the series I have not played through.

No "GoG Gems" discount today, "Really awesome offer" coming tomorrow (at the expense of a Thursday release? It seems to be talking in terms of discounts, not in terms of releases)
