GOG News and Updates 2011

I will buy the entire Ultima collection if EA wants to sell it to me. Mainline and spinoffs! I mainly want a DD version of Ultima 7 (both parts) and Underworld though.

Also, does anyone know who owns the rights for Yoot Tower?

EA has GOT to know they're sitting on a goldmine, don't they? I mean, just the fact that the two System Shock games have been at the top of the GOG wishlist forever now should be some sort of indication, right? For how relatively under-the-radar it is, the System Shock series is quite popular. I am absolutely convinced both games would do big numbers on GOG, especially with word-of-mouth. This goes for a couple of EA's other series.

It seems silly to me that EA is so reluctant to budge on this.

EA have their own store though. Maybe that's why the games are in limbo- EA can't see a financial benefit in making sure they work on XP/ Vista/ W7 and then selling them through their own store, but they don't want GOG to do the heavy lifting and get a proportion of sales revenue. Sounds stupid I guess, but it wouldn't be surprising given publishers' boneheadness to be honest.

I still have my Ultima 7 cloth map knocking around somewhere. If I get around to playing U7 via GoG, you'd better believe I'll be using the real map.

There was a compilation released of Ultimas 1-6, I wouldn't be surprised if that was to make up a single GoG release. I wonder if I can still find it?

I'd be really impressed if they got to the Worlds of Ultima games. You never really hear about those two, and they'd be a really interesting inclusion.

The Worlds of Ultima games have some FANTASTIC settings. Not enough Jungle and Victorian England/Space settings in games.

I can not remember for the life of me if I actually liked those games though.

There needs to be an open source Sim Golf. :( I wonder what the chances of that surfacing are if GOG gets EA?

Edit: I'll take a Sim Ant as well!

Sid Meier's SimGolf? I have it installed on Win 7 64 bit, no problems. Used a no-CD crack.

Wouldn't EA also include Need For Speed? I would be interested in the original Hot Pursuit and especially Porsche Unleashed.

Aw man, I really want it to be EA. EA just seems to have a more diverse back catalog. LA seems pretty much point-n-click and Star Wars.

Their worst limit is that ugly Ultima VI interface. Too bad they never released the third one in the series, set in the world of King Arthur with the interface from UVII. But perhaps it would had been too similiar to the main series, since the similiar setting.

That being said, if the announcement was that it was EA releasing specifically Origin's games on GOG, I would be a little disappointed.

Well: especially because EA has such a huge library of titles from so many different sources, I could actually really see the idea that they'd agree to a long-term partnership with someone like GOG that specifically had to "properly leverage the diverse EA catalog of properties" by tackling it one company at a time. That'd let them maximize the impact, give each individual library its own time in the sun, and otherwise drum up a lot more attention than just "hey we added EA, here's all your most-wanted games at once" would. They could start with Origin, then do Westwood, Maxis, and Bullfrog in individual batches over the course of, say, a year.

I can see some people on GoG's forums quoting someone called "EnigmaticT" (who I *think* is a GoG person) stating something along the lines of "It's not as exciting as System Shock". That said, I can't actually find the specific quote they're referring to now.

:( Nooooooooooooo

Glad to hear it runs and you have a copy to enjoy, I splurged a bit a while back picking up a couple dozen retail classic PC games I was missing, but I think I'm done with that now (it's expensive too, HoM&M Platinum cost way, way too much in hindsight), and will just hope for them to surface digitally.

Man, EA has the Crusader games. There's no way we'll be so lucky.

I think Crusader games would be a pretty large target w/ an EA deal.

It's a tough call! Both have some incredible unreleased games, and both will probably raise the question of what's the best joystick to buy for Windows 7 DOSBox gaming? I guess there must be something better than this right?

I'm still rocking the USB version of this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00000JDFT/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Problem is, DOSBox stick emulation is kind of shitty and I can't find a way to get games to recognize even half of the functionality.

As for my earlier comment, I just meant that I really don't think GOG has signed EA.

That was my favorite joystick too, RIP. It had a parallel port connection though (the one I owned), I don't even think I have those ports now, I'd probably need an adapter. But the whole "half the functionality" not working is what makes me put out the question of what is the best, properly working (3 axis, 10+ buttons, hat switch, throttle, etc etc) joystick for Windows 7 + DOSBox? Hopefully the answer turns up on GOG in the Wing Commander / TIE Fighter forums, if not here.

I used this puppy:

often with the screw-in joystick attachment. Hahaha.

Isn't EA trying to gain a foothold in the digital market with their store? Don't they have more to lose than gain by giving a direct competitor access to their entire catalog? On the other hand, someone has to do the work porting them over.

My money is on LucasArts given the earlier stuff I quoted. Regardless of whether that guy is currently at LucasArts, the company may have been thinking about it back in 2009. If so, hopefully it's not just a port (not that I'd complain) and is some sort of remastering, like the Monkey Island stuff.

Holy crap I had one very similar to that one complete with that lame screw-in joystick. Haha I actually loved that thing I was so pissed when the drivers stopped being updated; ah the days before USB HID drivers.

Saitek X35/X36 combo here. I still have one sealed in a box. The swivel button on the throttle was great for torso twist in the MechWarrior series. Man, I miss MW2/3.

Wow, heh, well you should try a real joystick too, I know you probably have a soft spot for that though, having used it, as I do with joysticks... it's fun having a more authentic joystick I think! I like the physical variation of things, like the throttle that slides, and hat switch, and large trigger, buttons on the stick vs the base, and well you get the idea. Props to using that though! :)

Getting classics ready for modern computers isn't quite as easy as tossing the binaries to the Steam guys. I have the impression that a company like EA isn't interested in doing the work for at best a modest amount of money, especially since so much of their back catalog has zero potential for new growth. You know, since they did such a great job murdering the franchises in the first place.

...I still think it's Lucasarts.

Lucky! I was a tightarse when I was a kid so I just ended up buying the Saitek equivalent that was Gravis Gamepad compatible. No configuring when I wanted to play Commander Keen 6!

Both of those are Sierra/Vivendi/Activision.

Didn't they publish the Quarantine games? I wouldn't mind playing Road Warrior: Quarantine 2 again, unless, like Privateer 2, the game is actually a pile of shite and I was put under a curse in my teens..

Yea, thinking about it, I practically guarantee it's LucasArts. EA doesn't have any of their back catalog titles available... and if they would, it would be exclusive on their store. LucasArts on the other hand, has a head start by having a couple of their titles on Steam.

I dunno, it couldn't go either way, and I wouldn't be disappointed with either.

That Gravis gamepad was easily one of my favorite controllers back in the day. So many games were enhanced just by that controller alone. It was really that good IMO. Love joysticks too, especially for the classics like Tie Fighter and the old Wing Commander games.

Under 8 hours now! If anyone feels like making a thread for the CDP/GOG conference today, don't wait for me, I probably won't be able to summarize it in the OP, and I also fear for a disappointment.

Probably better off waiting until after the news to hype it, at least then we'll know if it is actually something worth creating a thread about.

I think someone in The Witcher 2 thread was planning on making one.

EDIT: Yeah, here:

I stole this from the GOG forums, but the more I think about it, the more it seems horribly likely:

If I am reading the countdown timer text right, then in ~4 1/2 hours we will get the LOCATION where the big announcement will be. Since the post-it pretty clearly said E3, 2/6, LA it seems that we will find out that the announcement will be made at E3 in 4 days.

If this is right, then we have longer to wait to find out which publisher it is and it puts it smack in between my paydays. Since fate is cruel to me, I firmly believe that we have another half week of wailing and gnashing of teeth to go before we get an answer.

Yeah, no, they should be batshit insane to do that after the "GoG is closed" thing (they are actually a bit insane but not so much.)

Eh. EA's digital strategy for their new-release games isn't necessary related to the way they manage the back catalog. Something like NFS or whatever having its digital release being handled in whatever specific way they want makes sense, but for stuff that's over a decade old EA's never going to spend the resources themselves to leverage them correctly anyway, so they might as well push the job off to someone else.

If it's LucasArts, we get some awesome adventure games. If it's EA, we get System Shock. Either way, it's worth celebrating.

Unless GoG only picks the worst titles from the company's back catalog. Which would be beyond idiotic.

Where's the 4 days coming from?

God, that list of EA franchises is really sobering.

It's disturbing to know that they're SO FAR ON TOP that they can literally kill or keep imprisoned dozens of beloved franchises until they feel it's time to release them, if ever.

Many smaller companies would kill to have one or two major franchises.

Bad memories. That pad (Which was similar to the evil Amiga CD32 pad) almost made me want to quit gaming forever.

Anuway, the betting is EA, but knowing GOG, it'll end up wither being Square Enix, or they'll postpone the announcement again with this whole "DrM" rubbish.

We'll find out soon enough, but if it means I get to play System Shock 2 again, I don't care if the conference is a Benny Hill style chase though their set for an hour.

I would prefer EA to be honest. just for the amount of thing I would be interested.

EA:

The Ultima Underworld
Both System Shock
Sim Golf
Sim City 2000
The complete Bullfrog collection
The whole Wing Commander Saga
Seven Cities of Gold
Crusader

Lucas

Day of Tentacle
X-Wing series

Now I hope it´s not EA, lol
