GOG News and Updates 2011

It's going to be one of the cluster of three - if it was the dot on it's own, it'd be obvious what it was going to be before the reveal had finished.

What studios are in the cluster of three? I've been looking at the DRM teaser stuff, and I thought there was a syndicate reference there - the briefcase thing.....

2k, Lucasarts, and EA are in that cluster.

They make a big thing of one character's pose, I'm trying to figure out if that hand signal is sign language or somethign else.

Notch is a fan of GoG, then? Of course I approve :-)

It was always quite likely simply because the zoom would become instantly obvious if it had been squeenix :-)
True!

Hoping for Lucasarts, pretty sure it actually will be. Like was said earlier, their back catalog lends itself to GOG moreso than any others.

PS. scorpio, haven't seen you in AusGAF for yonks!

Yeah this was a funny reply to putting DRM in Minecraft.

Yeah been going through a rough time, might get back into AusGAF soonish.

Other than iD, what's to get excited about in 2K's catalogue? At the moment EA's got to be the most tempting of those three for me, given that 2K's pretty well-served by Steam and Lucasarts have at least some entries on it. EA would genuinely offer a lot of brand new potential.

Oh, Notch posted his GoG collection on Twitter.

My collection is bigger.

I feel like a living god.

(Or possibly an idiot who doesn't spend particularly rationally when stuff is that cheap. But I like the living god answer)

If I've read google maps correctly (and interpreted the correct address each time): Northernmost of the cluster is 2K Games. The middle is Lucasarts, and the southernmost is EA. Microsoft are, of course, up in Seattle doing their own nonclustery thing.

Edit: In amongst all this is a release (well, more of an update): Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror now includes the remastered version as well. 3-day promo, too, each of the titles on GoG (1-3) is half-price.

Love your work!

I'm guessing that it's gonna keep on zooming into the middle... and zoom... and zoom... WOO!

Also begs the question of why they're using all the companies logos. Surely they'd only have permission if they're going to sign on eventually?

goddamn sweet promo for the first three Broken Sword games. only $2.99 each if you buy all three. i just rebought them all.

The best thing about GOG is that keep adding awesome extras even AFTER the game has been released. I wish I rebought TW1 when it was $5 because it came with a whole heap of cool stuff you rarely see Steam doing. They also test all the games, like when Motoracer got taken down because it wouldn't work on a heap of computers, whereas Steam just chuck them up and expect the community to get them working. It's nice to just click download and have it all work first time, no stuffing around. Plus artwork and stuff!

How could one not care about EA's backlog?

i'm sure there are probably some games i would wanna play from them as well but if GOG is only unveiling one company, LucasArts for me.

There are more games I want from EA, but the games I want MOST are from LucasArts. So I'd prefer LA. Not caring about EA seems to be going a bit for though.

Truth. I had the original version of Broken Sword 2 back from when it was on sale before. I check my account and I also now have the remastered version. Nice! Will have to reinstall and probably restart my playthrough, no biggie though.

"biggest announcement ever" is a pretty big statement. Something is bigger than when they get Baldur's Gate I & II ? :D

With that kind of hype I'd bet EA or LucasArts. LucasArts fits in better with gog's userbase IMO but who knows.

What made Baldur's Gate / Torment / Icewind Dale / ToEE such a big announcement is they were never released digitally.

I wonder if Lucas Arts is really still the biggest publisher of unreleased classics? I know they have a few great one like X-Wing and TIE Fighter and Full Throttle and a few others, but a couple of their bigger titles like Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and maybe some others have already been put on other services.

GOG wouldn't be correct in talking this up if with games already released on Steam or somewhere else.

I've just thought of a good reason for it *not* to be EA: If GoG were to get EA, could they *possibly* resist teasing it without going for a whole "SHODAN taking over the website" storyline?

Well, here's what I'd expect from LucasArts (U for games not currently sold elsewhere):
1. Maniac Mansion (U)
2. Zac McKraken (U)
3. Grim Fandango (U)
4. Day of the Tentacle (U)
5. The Dig
6. Loom
7. Sam and Max: Freelance Police (U)
8. Full Throttle (U)
9. Secret of Monkey Island
10. Monkey Island 2
11. Curse of Monkey Island (U)
12. Escape From Monkey Island (U)
13. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
14. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
15. Indiana Jones Desktop Adventures (U)
16. Outlaws (U)
17. Armed and Dangerous (U)
18. Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (U)
19. Secret Weapons over Normandy (U)

(All Star Wars from here on:)
20. Dark Forces
21. Jedi Knight
22. Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
23. Jedi Academy
24. KOTOR
25. KOTOR2 (Edit: U)
26. Battlefront
27. Battlefront 2
28. Yoda Stories (U)
29. TIE Fighter (U)
30. X-Wing (U)
31. X-Wing vs TIE Fighter (U)
32. X-Wing Alliance (U)
33. Rogue Squadron (U)
34. Rebel Assault (U)
35. Rebel Assault II (U)
36. Episode I Racer (U)
37. Galactic Battlegrounds (U)
38. Starfighter (U)
39. Lego Star Wars <-- possibly also other Lego games, but I think this is the only one that really meets the GOG cutoff if we're not including the possibility of modern games
41. Rebellion (U)
42. Force Commander (U)

Stuff that I couldn't think of but that Wikipedia lists:
43. Masterblazer (Pinball, 1990)
44. Afterlife (Sim, 1996)
45. Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb
46. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine
47. Star Wars: Empire at War

You forgot Republic Commando

Son, I am disappoint.

Was cutting off around 2003-2004. Same reason why I included LSW1 and no others. I'm still trying to deduce if the Witcher 1/2 will lead to more modern games being released on GOG.

Just out of interest, what service is KOTOR 2 available on?

I thought the Xbox Marketplace, but apparently not. Will edit that one.

They have a bunch of post '05 stuff.

Yea, that looks like it'd work for "biggest announcement ever" on GOG, more than I realized there.

yea, kinda curious about that. maybe if TW1 and TW2 were successful enough, they would lean towards more recent games. altho it's probably an exception.

Yeah, it's weird. I get King's Bounty: The Legend, because it's inspired by an old franchise and captures a certain lost kind of gameplay that isn't typical anymore... but Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death is a terrible 2005 FPS. It's not old, and it's not good. How could it be a Good Old Game? :p

... and then they have something like Heroes of Might and Magic 4, but not Heroes of Might and Magic 5. HOMM5 is only $9.99 on Steam, so it's not a price issue. The game was received at least as well as HOMM4, so it's not a quality issue. They've got Tropico Reloaded (1+2) but not 3. And UT GOTY but not UT2k4.

So even though they have some modern games, they still seem to, as a rule, stick to the old stuff.

I reckon it's all a conspiracy to make me feel old. By putting a game I worked on on the service, and calling the service Good Old Games, it just highlights how that was all so very much in the past. *sob*.

Not to nitpick because it doesn't really hurt your point much but in case anyone gets confused: UT2k4 is on there. All of the Unreal games are on GOG, except for UT2k3 and UT3.

Beaten by just a hair. Sorry.

If it's Lucas Arts, I'm defintely re-buying Rebel Assault to see if they make rose-tinted glasses large enough for that game, I played it so much back then and think I might have been crazy for liking it (must have been the FMV + VA at the time), all I can remember now is that first level you pilot an x-wing in, and dying like 1000 times in it.

Does anyone else think that they've secured the rights to more than one of those five publishers?

They did mention earlier that they secured the rights to one publisher and two of the others they were in negotiations with, so it's possible, if unlikely.

I suspect that they've secured one now, but they're close with a couple of others.

I replayed them circa 2001-2002 or so when I found one of the LucasArts compilations in an EBGames for like $10, and I remember thinking that they were pretty well made, but that the limitations of the format basically made it impossible for them to really achieve the potential of the scenarios.

Haven't seen those CDs in years, I'm sure they're rotting in Mom's basement somewhere, so I'd be up for re-buying them too!

I have no problems getting DOSbox games working, but some of the win95/98 era games are very annoying / frustrating under win7-64.

Yeah, Win95 is the big black hole of classic game compatibility now. Anything meant to run on Windows XP forward has a few different options (including virtualized Windows XP, even) to ensure that it can run effectively on a modern system; anything written for DOS is easily playable fully emulated; it's really only those Win95 games, with their bizarre hacky implementation and ancient APIs that are nearly impossible to get running on a modern system under 64-bit.

With that kind of hype I'd bet EA or LucasArts. LucasArts fits in better with gog's userbase IMO but who knows.

I'm not sure why. LucasArts has great adventure games and spaceship games; EA has lots of old classic RPGs, strategy games, sims, and seminal early experiments in 3D gaming. Both seem extremely well-suited to GOG's audience to me.

Minsc said:

Assuming I'm allowed to apply my own discretion to what constitutes a "classic," EA is a clear and dramatic winner in purely numeric terms. From stump's list I figure there's about 12-15 really particularly worthwhile titles that are as-yet digitally unreleased; EA, on the other hand, easily has 20+ games in the vault that are unavailable and would easily be considered all-time classics, much less good enough to see GOG release.

(It's definitely #2, though; EA and LA are well above the other three from this list.)

Prophane33 said:

What they said was that they'd finished a deal with one and were in active negotiations with at least one other. I think we'll see at least one other of those five revealed this year, but not right this moment.

Who holds the rights to System Shock now? It would be amazing if we could get this. I'm really happy with GOG's catalogue so far (especially the infinity engine games) but System Shock 2, Maniac Mansion and Kotor would be welcomed with open arms.

I think you're overselling MS. They've got a lot of great stuff, but it's not stuff destined for GOG.

Here's the top 200 on the wishlist (this isn't publicly available, GOG just shows the top 10).

Well at least QfG games are in the top 100, but not nearly high enough!

Lucasarts list
One group missing from your list that would likely become available once LA got on board would be the old Lucasfilm games like Ballblazer, Koronis Rift, and The Eidelon.

And the map has updated to eliminate Microsoft. Big surprise there.
