GOG News and Updates 2011

Someone mentioned that getting Rayman 2 to work on win7 64-bit was difficult. Are there instructions for installing it somewhere?
I would rather not pay the $6 if I already own it. One of my favorite games, and the PC version is great because it doesn't have the english voice overs.

The GoG version? Click on the EXE. Press Next a couple times.

AFAIK the PC version of Rayman 2 is based on the Dreamcast version. It supports all resolutions and I'm fairly certain that its widescren is Hor+
It looks great.

Gamepads work but there is no way to remap the controls. For an Xbox 360 pad with the official drivers this is unfortunate because you're not going to be able to use the triggers (they occupy a single axis) and Xpadder isn't a perfect (but still manageable) solution.

Wait so you can get it to work with Xpadder? I can't stand that A is jump and spacebar is shoot. Should be the other way around. Did shoulders do anything or do you mean for firing?

I don't remember, it's been a long time since I've had the official 360 pad drivers. I just remember it being a huge pain.

DR. M? That has to be some kind of clue to do with... um... DRM?

That's all I've got.
DRM is evil, which is why the evil character they created is called Dr. M. They aren't going to add DRM so don't worry about that.

Let's focus here :D A wireless xbox360 pad is recognized in the game? Even if its not in the most optimal scheme, i would like to play the game with the pad.

Picked up Rayman:Forever and Rayman 2. Never played the series and the lastest GI had an article about a new one that made me sad I missed out.

GOG are going to announce their new publisher next Thursday. Press release here.

GOG.com has already teased that during the CDP Days 2011 Spring Conference they will reveal a new deal with one of five big publishers still not signed with them: Microsoft, Lucas Arts, Electronic Arts, Square Enix or Take2. The time has come and on June 2nd everything will become clear. During the live stream GOG.com will reveal the name of the publisher and the first games out of the batch of 25+ titles that will be released throughout summer 2011 at GOG.com.

Sounds good to me! Guess we can't go wrong with any of those publishers. In some ways, I'd like to see Microsoft, and get all the Age of Empires games on GOG, but I doubt that will happen.

Of the possible contenders I'd rank EA as my top hope, Lucasarts second, MS 3rd.

That sounds about right, but more than anything I'd love to have ultra-easy access to the full talkie versions of DoTT, Sam n Max, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Fate of Atlantis.

Of those five I definitely think that's the right ordering. LucasArts and EA are both an order of magnitude beyond the others in terms of seminal and entirely inaccessible titles that GOG could bring back to modern audiences; after that, Microsoft has a moderately rich catalog to dig into whereas the other two would really be looking at a fairly small and contained set of franchises.

Rayman 2 PC is like the N64 version, not the DC version, except with better graphics and higher resolution support than you'd get on consoles. Rayman 2 was first released as a simultaneous PC and N64 release; the DC, PS1, and PS2 ports came later (and more recently the DS and 3DS as well), each some time after the other.

The PS1 version is significantly cut down and isn't worth playing. The PS2 one had some big changes, including English-language voice acting, an overworld to run around instead of level select from points, and a few more things. Despite that the changes aren't liked by all and the DC version is probably the most highly regarded, but the original N64/PC release really is quite similar to the DC; I have both the DC and PC versions, and it looks and plays pretty much the same on both platforms. The PC just doesn't have the added stuff like those DC-exclusive minigames. I think the DC/PS2 versions also added a normal stage or two to the original, but still the original version is still great and very much worth playing by anyone who hasn't before. It's a great game and the great art still stands up even if the graphics obviously don't look as good technically now as they did when the game came out. It supports reasonably high resolutions, too -- it lets me choose anything from 640x480 to 1280x1024, and does have widescreen resolutions as well.

As for gamepads, the game supports analog gamepads, yes. It only supports one analog stick, because most PC gamepads then only had one stick (and the N64 also only had one stick), so there isn't a camera stick, but other than that the gamepad controls are good. It is true that it doesn't have control configuration options, though, and it only sees your first controller so if you have several plugged in detach ones other than the one you want to use or something. That you can't remap the buttons is a little annoying I guess, but oh well. It's worth it to get the analog controls though, trying to control a 3d platformer with a gamepad is pretty difficult. I've done it -- in fact when I first played this game, I quite likely played it on a gamepad that only had a dpad -- but it's better with an analog stick for sure.

Oh, I can't say anything about x64, though. I have a 32-bit OS.

Overall, yeah, Rayman 2 is a great classic and the PC version is a fine version of the game. Anyone who hasn't played it, or who wants to play it, definitely should pick it up!

I haven't picked up Rayman 2 on GOG yet, but I think I will after trying an old demo for the game I found. I did not imagine that this game would look so good at high resolution. Even the text and sprites look great! And it runs so smooth compared to when I played it on the N64. I may have to experiment with a gamepad control program to see if I can get it to play the way I want to first though.

Oh, and that logo is there because I took these in a demo that has that in the corner.

Related? Granted, this was back in late 2009:
Patrick Klepek from G4TV reports the following, as part of an interview he did with the LucasArts president Darrel Rodriguez about plans ahead:

«Patrick: I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company’s lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series. His answer? “We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned, (…) We will soon….. said Rodriguez“»
http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2009/08/lucasarts-x-wing-and-tie-fighter-coming-back/

I hope....

Here's one more just because I thought it looked nice. If anybody does purchase this and finds a way to edit the controls then please post it. The game is great, but the button layout is a little odd. Does GOG ever update these older games with bug fixes and compatibility for modern controllers?

2v1k8j7.png

Edit: I'm running on Windows 7 64bit and it works fine. Resolution changes through the menu crash the game, but the readme acknowledges that this is just a problem with the demo so the GOG version probably doesn't have it. The demo is here.

I think you're overselling MS. They've got a lot of great stuff, but it's not stuff destined for GOG.

And for your controller mapping woes - use a gamepad-to-keyboard mapper. This is assuming there exists one that allows you to keep the analogue sticks as analogue sticks but buttons as keyboard keys.

I approve of each of these entries on the list, but as #1245 asserts, they shouldn't be there at all.

Alice is there twice, too... so theoretically you could add the count for those two together, then it's almost in the top 10. But maybe some people voted for both?

This is exactly what I need, but I can't find any program that allows me to do this. Does anybody know what the best controller mapping program that allows for this is?

Have you tried Total Game Control? Not really sure if it will do what you want but it's worth a try I guess.

Ultima 8 and Ultima Collection have the same number of votes...how bizarre.

LOLz I completely forgot I own Ultima Collection. Maybe I should try installing it or something.

Well, you can't say they don't milk this for all it's worth:

There is even a countdown on the main page now, looks like it's supposed to slowly zoom in on the location of the company.

Any of those five would be great, but I think it will be Square Enix.

Try XPadder, you can make your own profiles for various gamepads. I think if you do not add the analog sticks to the profile, Xpadder will not intercept them at all.

I really hope EA as I think thatd' cover Origin, Bullfrog, Maxis, Westwood along with their current studios, there's a lot of titles there.

I'd love me some Dungeon Keeper or DK2 without futzing around. I love gog. EA swallowed a lot of companies that had some good backlog.

I have no problems getting DOSbox games working, but some of the win95/98 era games are very annoying / frustrating under win7-64.

"biggest announcement ever" is a pretty big statement. Something is bigger than when they get Baldur's Gate I & II ? :D

With that kind of hype I'd bet EA or LucasArts. LucasArts fits in better with gog's userbase IMO but who knows.

It was always quite likely simply because the zoom would become instantly obvious if it had been squeenix :-)

It'll either be obviously Microsoft very soon, or obviously not Microsoft. And probably not Microsoft to keep the tension up.

What order do those other three spots appear in?

It's going to be one of the cluster of three - if it was the dot on it's own, it'd be obvious what it was going to be before the reveal had finished.

What studios are in the cluster of three? I've been looking at the DRM teaser stuff, and I thought there was a syndicate reference there - the briefcase thing.....
