GOG News and Updates 2011

No, it's pretty much everything. Bad acting, bad puzzles, bad story, bad music, bad graphics, screen-eating UI. I don't have a problem with GK2, love the Tex Murphy games, and would like Rama to be GOG'd, for reference.

Ah, I see. I think I'm gonna give it a shot anyway. Even if the puzzles, music, and UI annoy me I'll still find the story somewhat interesting. And bad acting is always charming in its own way. :-)

I played Realms of the Haunting for the first time this year when GOG added it and without any nostalgia at all I found it to be one of the best games I'd played this year. It's awesome.

Great news. Was always interested in this title (as I'm a huge fan of System Shock and this one looks awfully similar in approach).

Did you download any mods or patches or anything before playing it? Maybe control tweaks?

Bought the first Gabriel Knight since i can't stand live action games and GK3 just looks like eyerape. Just last week i had read a lot of positive stuff about the series so great timing. Will never be played, though, as pretty much 95% of the things i buy from GOG.

I demand GOG GAF buy Sanitarium, Realm and Scratches.

Three times each.

I just bought Realms and Scratches before even seeing your post.

I didn't buy Sanitarium. I'm not sure why I'm not interested in it.

Nope, played it pretty much raw. I did use the DOSBox control remapper to switch it to WASD, but that's about it.

GK2 is one of the few decent decent live action games. GK3 is also pretty good if you ignore some of the excessively shitty puzzles.

GK1 is my favorite though.

Is that simple enough or did you follow a tutorial?

It's right in DOSBox, just hit ctrl + F1 in the game and it'll bring up a GUI where you can remap the keyboard. Easy peasy.

I agree. I had a hard time getting into GK2 at first because of the FMV and different actors, but once it clicked it was great.

Argh I really want to buy some of those point and clicks!
Which are the best?

Edit: Oops there's already a list on the previous page, forget I asked!

ok, i have already bought Sanitarium while ago, and wanted to buy scratches and realms, but it redirects me to 404 page for checking out. Please take my money! is this a usual error? tried both chrome and IE

also, although not in the list, but how good is darkfall? I have the first one

No, give both GK2 and GK3 a chance, they are still great games.

Also, for all the shit that GK3 receives for its 3D engine it has one thing that hasn't been reused to this day (at least I don't remember it being used in other 3D adventure games): free camera. Each room has a set of predefined cameras but you can also unlock the camera and free roam around the room. It's especially great in a game like GK3 due to it taking place in a real location - Rennes le Chateau.

And to all people playing Gabriel Knight 1 for the first time - make sure that the first thing you do in the game is to turn off the narrator voice. For some odd reason Sierra decided that the voice of "old grandma reading a fairy tale book" is suitable for this game :/

Do those horror point and clicks have jump scares?I'm not a big fan of those things :s

Phantasmagoria has some creepy and really gory cut-scenes; and, as usual in Sierra games, a sequence near the end of the game where you can easily die if you do something wrong - in this case it's a chase through the house.

Gabriel Knight series doesn't have jump scares. The horror thing comes rather through the atmosphere and story.

What what!? The narrator is one of my most favorite parts of the game! I love the idea that a little old lady with a wry sense of humor is enjoying it as much as I am.

Blood is basically the best old FPS there is, and the GOG community released a fantastic patch thing that adds a ton of content and modernizes the controls (iirc).

That's a very bold statement considering System Shock exists.

System Shock is not even remotely as good a 'fps' as Blood; barely functional controls disqualifies it alone.

Just because it is a first person game, a very good one from what I recall, it doesn't mean it is a very good first person shooter.

I guess I see what you mean as System Shock is more about the complete package than the core shooting element. Even still, you must play the game with the fairly recently released mouselook mod. Makes it far more enjoyable to play.

oh! there's such a mode?! I want it, I want it all, I want it now! thanks!

don't play system shock with mouselook. just learn to use the original controls properly. I still get surprised every time I play system shock just how many really cool touches and the amount of depth there actually are to the controls.

always liked these games. they are a bit trashy, but some interesting ideas. prefer escape from paradise city though.

Sorry, but there's nothing to learn about using them properly to be honest, the controls are just broken cumbersome and a chore. It should have mapped more control options to the buttons (like leaning, sitting position) and also should have added an enable/disable free look option.

Stylish fashion (who doesn't want to get married in a kick-ass, huge, fur-lined trench coat), great favors (guns, try to beat that!), straight to the point, and even cheevos. I don't know what I was thinking, lol.

New release: Might and Magic IX for $5.99

Isn't this the worst of the M&M series?

I believe it's generally regarded as such, yeah. Still, I think it's important it goes up for the sake of having the whole series complete.

I wonder why we've never seen Wizardry? I guess it might have something to do with the fact that it's still an active series in Japan? I think it and The Bard's Tale are the only two remaining huge original early RPG series that GoG hasn't got - and I would assume that The Bard's Tale is going to happen at some point thanks to EA.

Edit: Thinking about it, I seem to remember someone mentioning that the very earliest Wizardry titles were PC Booters. I can imagine there might be some difficulty with emulating them, perhaps.

Interplay released the Ultimate Wizardry Archives which made the booter games (I-V) fully playable under Win95/98 so that shouldn't be a concern. Would love to see them on GoG and would buy them for the 4th time in some cases. I already have the orginal Apple and PC releases of some of them plus the ultimate archives version

The problem is modern Adventures followed the wrong path (cat puzzle) instead of focusing on the great things GK3 offered (free camera, Serpent Rouge puzzle).
GK3 was poison and antidote. People (and developers) took the poison and tossed the antidote.
I was going to say something but then I noticed that the article was written in in 2000 (though the horrible page layout should have been my fist clue)

hehe. am I the only person to like m&m9? :))

It's a pretty famous article. You'll always find it brought up when you are discussing about GK. ;)

It may be old but the crate review method still holds true.

I haven't played GK3 for a long time now but wasn't the infamous cat mustache puzzle the only dumb one in the game? I don't remember having any problems with other puzzles in the game (maybe aside from the puzzle chamber near the end of the game, where you had to choose one item based on some crazy logic and tips from Grace).

Has anyone had any luck playing The Longest Journey in a window with D3DWindower? Some have recommended it but I can't get it to work right. It launches in a window but the mouse is restricted to the top-left quadrant and won't move outside that, so that's kind of useless. I've tried playing with all the options in the tabs, but none of them seem to do much (of course I don't know what the hell most of them mean). On Win7 x64 here.

GOG seems to be hinting at a Day of the Tentacle release according to their twitter/facebook. Could it be a Lucasarts deal finally coming through? Dare I hope, GAF?

How so? Sounds more like Fahrenheit to me, which would turn the site into www..com. If they had LucasArts signed they'd make a HUGE deal out of it.
