GOG News and Updates 2011

Is Darklands good? The description seems pretty awesome and I dig the retro graphics and the random encounter stuff.

It's awesome, but not an easy game. It doesn't have a distinct plot, so if you don't like just going around taking subquests and increasing your fame around the world, you may get bored. It's full of nice touches (like the seasons cycle on the overworld map, the various origins and professions you can choose for your characters).

I don't know which version they put on GOG, but here's a website with all the patches.

It's as ambitious and deep as RPGs get. It is very old though, so not sure how accessible it will be now.

Oh shittles! Better jump on this one.

Anyone have any recommendations for other pickups today? I understand Star Control isn't really worth it....

Total Annihilation is an essential part of the history of RTS.
Outcast is a great and beautiful adventure game.

You mean Star Control 1? Yeah, it's not that special, from what little I remember of it. Star Control 2 is absolutely fantastic, but it's available for free legitimately with a lot of optional upgrades.

edit: Do you have Master of Magic?

I know everyone says that Blood 2 is a huge step back from Blood, but the original's graphics make me want to throw up. Is it worth it for me to pick up either of them?

I'll break this into tiers:

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos
Master of Orion 1+2
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack
RollerCoaster Tycoon: Deluxe
Witcher: Enhanced Edition, The
Total Annihilation: Commander Pack
These are all awesome and hold up perfectly fine. RCT1 has a better campaign (of sorts), RCT2 has more stuff. I'm going to get both.

Alone in the Dark 1+2+3
Blood (One Unit Whole Blood)
Independence War Deluxe
Master of Magic
Outcast
These games are also great BUT they all have age issues, often with interfaces. Master of Magic is one of the all-time greats and IMO a better game than Age of Wonders Shadow Magic, but the interface really shows it's age and I wind up just playing AoW. I think most will like them (genre preferences aside) but as you can see there's already someone who won't like Blood due to the visuals.

Master of Orion 3
Star Control 1+2
Star Control 3
Total Annihilation: Kingdoms + Expansion
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
Blood 2: The Chosen + Expansion
Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive
Locomotion, Chris Sawyer's
Generally speaking, don't bother with these outside of curiosity. Star Control 2 is great but you can get it for free and slightly modernized. Desperados is supposed to be sorta ok but horribly bugged. Star Control 3 I actually have slightly fond memories of and will be buying but I suspect my memories are going to betray me.

The only one I'm not sure about is B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th.

Expand on this. I already own RCT1 and am tempted by RCT2 but I need actual compelling reasons.

Yeah, what I meant was "not worth getting the GOG version when TUQM exists."

No, should I?

Master of Magic is my favorite strategy game by far. I haven't played other strategy games much (Master of Magic kinda spoiled me), so I might not make the best comparisions. It's an early Civ clone, but with a fantasy setting and detailed battles (the biggest feature). Here's a video of someone invading a city that's being protected by a wall of fire spell. The direction units face, terrain, if they're behind a wall and such all matter. It does limit you to 12 units per side in a battle, though.

The only real problem with the game is that Normal difficulty gets too easy after you get a decent grasp of the game, and on Hard the AI obviously cheats (but it's still beatable).

Master of Magic is one of the all-time greats and IMO a better game than Age of Wonders Shadow Magic, but the interface really shows it's age and I wind up just playing AoW.
I still get sucked into Master of Magic from time to time, and I'd argue that it's aged well (it uses the mouse)... but I haven't played Age of Wonders. :)

Blood is basically the best old FPS there is, and the GOG community released a fantastic patch thing that adds a ton of content and modernizes the controls (iirc).

Tons of fun. Also, Rollercoaster Tycoon is a must buy.

So yeah, Blood. Purchased it a few months ago and didn't know a whole lot about it, just that it had a cult following and Monolith was behind the thing. Completely missed it back in the day. So, no nostalgia glasses here, and you know what? It's one of the absolute best shooters I've ever played. It's a straight up man's game, with one manly arsenal of weapons - probably the best of any FPS, actually.

$3 to have your balls rocked off is one hell of a deal.

Ended up picking up both RT1 and RT2. Again, I was quibbling over the difference between 4.99 and 7.98. How silly of me.

And the collection grows.....

Also if there is nothing really wrong with the PC version, OddWorld: Stranger's Wrath is a fantastic game. I didnt even know it was on GOG. Ill let others chime it that might have more experience with the PC version, but I think it deserves a bolding.

I believe the PC version had all sorts of issues and a few people recommended against buying it around release (in another thread), don't know if things have changed.

Oh yeah! I'm downloading RCT right now. I'll get to RCT2 before the end of the weekend. I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED! No more discs and all the expansions to my favorite games of all time.

I've been playing RCT2 on and off for the past year and I have to say it's aged better than I would have thought. One of the most addicting games out there.

Same here. Could not resist getting 2 of my favorite games ever spent many a summer with my cousins playing them.

Uh, RCT1 looks awful on my laptop. Any way to change the resolution?
It always looks best when just windowed, I'm afraid. It's a sprite-based game, so stretching it will always look like ass.

edit -
Guys I just had an idea. How about we all decide that instead of buying more games for GoG, we'll download and play one of the games we bought in the last sale but haven't touched yet?

*downloads HoMM III*

Wait, how do you get RCT1 windowed? I looked online and couldn't find anything.

Eh? You know, I can't remember the exact process but it couldn't have been hard because 13 year old me did it. I mean, worst comes to worst you can just force it via windows open commands in the shortcut but there should be a way.

Try pressing just "F4".

Failing that, read the manual.

edit - Or just do what the man with the rodent says.

Use the options. You can also change from a few preset resolutions there too.

For some reason RCT doesn't kill my explorer.exe to run like it does to others, at least not visually.

Master of Magic seems pretty good for 3 bucks, maybe i should bite.

Fuck no tiered sales just like i like. Why did GoG do it for this one and not for all the DnD stuff? This irritates me.

Because they think they can charge a premium for the DnD games.

What's the difference between RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and 2?

Very few differences, but I'll list the ones I can remember:

*RCT2 has a sandbox mode where you can create your own amusement park from scratch and choose the rules.
*RCT2 also has a ride making mode where you can just create rides free of monetary or time constraints and save them for use in the game.
*RCT2 has several new rides, stalls, objects and pathways (especially with the expansion packs).
*The handymen don't have "mowing" automatically checked on default in RCT2 like they did in RCT1. This is because mowing does nothing for the park rating or the enjoyment of the guests.
*Guests will now observe the rides and take pictures in RCT2.
*When choosing a ride in RCT2, you automatically go to creating it whereas in RCT1 you had to click the ride, then confirm your choice.
*All scenarios are unlocked from the beginning of the game in RCT2, whereas in RCT1 you had to beat a scenario to unlock one.

If I think of more I'll add them.

EDIT: Others

*I THINK RCT1 didn't have ATM machines but RCT2 does. This means guests who are having a good time can stay at your park longer.
*Building objects and scenery is much more in-depth in RCT2.
*Rides can be built underground in RCT2.
*Scenarios are divided by their difficulty.

^Thanks, and then why getting RCT 1?

Any tips on running Blood? I'm getting stuttering in Fullscreen, and in Windowed mode, I get graphical glitches and a black screen when I start a new game.

Did you use the mod/frontend listed in the OP? It's amazing.

Well, silly me for not reading the whole OP >.<
I'll try it now.

Edit: I can't play the game like this. First, mouse sensitivity is way too high, unplayable. Screen resolution (windowed) is too small, and when I try to make it bigger, I get graphical glitches.
Any fix to the stuttering for the game vanilla?

Strange, it works perfectly for most people, much better than the default install. In the launcher, click the first icon, "Configs & Maps" and try a different renderer. Direct3d is all rainbows for me, but DDraw works fine. To lower the mouse sensitivity, edit the One Unit Whole Blood\Games\dosboxBlood.conf file in notepad, and change the line "sensitivity=100" to "sensitivity=20" or something more to your liking.

Otherwise, if you want to not use the whole special launcher, you could simply go to the program files > GOG > Blood folder and there should be a tool to change DOSBox's graphic settings there as well, try a few of the other modes. You could also just edit that same dosboxBlood.conf file directly and change the "output=x" line to whatever you want to use.
