Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida appeared during the the “Game Hack” corner on the latest episode of Tokyo FM radio show One Morning today, where he briefly discussed the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI.

Get the tidbits below.

-Final Fantasy XVI is quite action-oriented. It’s a Final Fantasy featuring story and action

-(What about players who aren’t good at action games?) "We really want players to enjoy the story, so we’re preparing a mode for players who want to focus on story. Since we have quite the substantial support actions, we’re of course preparing something easy to operate and smooth to play. Don’t worry too much (players who aren’t good at action games.)"

-"I’m from the generation that has been playing the Final Fantasy series from the first game in real-time—I’m almost in my 50s. I think the Warriors of Light have grown up in their own worlds, so I want to create a world of Final Fantasy that those who know the good and bad of reality can also be passionate about. I believe there are certain hardships that are experienced when becoming an adult, so I want to make the main theme of this game something that those who grew up playing Final Fantasy and understand reality can still enjoy, get something out of, and think about."

Story focused is probably the super easy, borderline autopilot mode some games have. It's optional so I don't see the issue.

As for the game being action heavy, that's great....as long as the combat system is actually good

That's good news. Curious to see more of this game because the story does look interesting.

I'm assuming there will be other party members as well that they will show off in a new gameplay trailer.

But please put a trophy there that rewards normal or higher difficulty play because I don’t like it when it feels I’m just making my life more difficult for the sake of it. If you get stuck on some boss, you have to battle your own urge to go into options and pick press x to win option instead of being some repercussions for it.

What I hear, DMC battle designer is involved and that’s the direction this game seems to be going to. I’m perfectly fine with that, only thing that keeps me away from DMC is its focus on style over sheer survival and progress.

At least Falcom still make quality turn based jrpgs. Most of these japanese action rpgs are "master of none". Middling combat not close to the quality of an action game or the strategic thinking of a turn based combat

Maybe but I prefer they keep trying to blend the two than just make a character action game or a regular turn based rpg. Square stuck with it and I think the FF7 combat system ended up being fantastic and unique. I hope this doesn't end up just being a full blown action game.

Isn't falcoms latest game also an action rpg

Yes. Falcom's Trails series is turn based. Falcom's Ys series is action rpg. And yes Ys combat is middling when compared to an action game. This game when you take away all the flashy visuals distracting will most likely be just as average in combat like FFXV, Kingdom Hearts 3, and FF7R before it.

Nah, Unless Tokyo Xanadu is one of the all time greats. Falcoms last 7 years of work definitely gets stomped by FF7R. at least on hard mode.
We need less turn-based and more tactical.

Please no. They said the same shit about FFXV. That newbies could enjoy the combat and the story (lol what story), but FFXV ended up being the most frustrating, most unbalanced action RPG of all time for me. Its not that you could really die, you could but it took a long ass time. Its that the game was tedious, every hit would insta down you, and you were forced to throw a phoenix down, but your max HP was limited to like 30% until you threw an elixer. why. Why not just dialing back the damage, make it so easy that you hardly get knocked out instead of constantly having to throw items breaking the pace? The game had nothing to do with skill, unlike KH2-3, I think enemies would just phantom hit you anyway. OH, and elixers, you know, those rare full cure/mp restorative items of past games, they cost like 400 gil a piece in FFXV. Why, because this shit is unbalanced as hell. The devs must've given up and just throw a shit ton of free cure items in here to counter the shitty mechanics.

The bottom line is, I hope FFXVI steers clear from this road. If it has difficulty settings like KH I'm fine. Really, KH3 post patch on Critical and with Limit Cut battles is my favourite KH in terms of gameplay. Its flawless. If you were kind of dissapointed by the game, and its okay to do so, at least try it with the patches and CM.

FFVII combat is okay. Its bad if you treat it as an action game and think rolling will have iframes etc. No, in FFVII you're supposed to defend and take minimal damage as you would in turn based fights. And then you strike with the right moves, switch characters, and build stagger meter. That non playable party members are so useless is part of this; you're supposed to take the reins which is why you can instantly switch with d pad. Building ATB is a matter of quickly attacking a bit, and switching up, rinse repeat. I must say I enjoyed the combat. Its the only part of R I enjoyed.

Hopefully they start with the excellent work they did for FF7R remake’s combat. Clean up a few of the issues and add in a few twists/quirks to make FF16 unique.

Trophies are a quick, but non lasting gratification. If you enjoy higher difficulty, if you find more challenging games fun, if you like overcoming obstacles, just go for it, even if nobody applaude you o the game tells that you are good. Play your game in the way you find more enjoyable, don't let achievements dictate how you should play.
Ask yourself why are you playing a game. Do you want to "win"? Do you seek challenge? Do you want experience a good story with interesting characters? Do you want to just have mindless fun? Your choice. From you post I think that in that situation you aren't enjoying the game, the trophy would be a distraction, a new, external goal to hide the fact that the game itself is incapable of giving you enough reasons to continue playing/mastering.

It was clear that the combat was going to be action-oriented. I thought the combat in FFXV was straight garbage, and that it was only marginally better in 7R but still far from a competent action game.

Turn based Final Fantasy is probably not coming back but at least we still have Atlus for traditional JRPGs...

I have serious gripes with FF7R but the combat is the best part.

And now you're telling me a DMC combat designer alum is helping?

I'm with you on that, extremely excited for 16. I'm hoping that they combine, FF7R with this but make it more options for melee attacks. Maybe infusing elements into attacks, while also having the ability to cast spells. Exciting times.

I love action games but not Final Fantasy action games. I "prefer" turned based but I know that just won't happen. Like some others I didn't really like FFXV action combat and given the option for a story mode I might consider that but it really depends what it means. If it means fights are super easy and automatically done for you then I will opt for the combat mode.

I'm quite happy with the direction FF combat has taken. XV wasn't good, but 7R did a good job with picking up the MH World Combat Designer since it worked out well. So I'm not too worried about the quality of the ARPG combat when it comes to XVI as they poached some good Capcom people for this, too.
Why haven't they formally announced scenario writer and character designer yet? Please.
Major information reveal is planned for this year. Likely around E3 time.

VIIR’s combat was amazing. One of the best action combats in a jrpg and the perfect continuation of some of the ideas from XIII.

So I hope the team takes some ques from that game as I don’t want just another hack and slash game.

As for “story mode”. Don’t care, but good for those that want it.

What I just want for sure is actual party members and good character progression systems.

Doesn't matter what they do, this will be the last Final Fantasy they ever make. Nobody cares about this franchise anymore.
What the fuck are you talking about?

VIIR just came out and did great and was well praised.

XV sold great and at least had a mixed reaction.

XIV continues to be much praised, had a fantastic expansion, and has a hyped up next expansion.

The remasters are strong sellers and keep them in the public eye.

The series is in the best shape it’s been in years.

VIIR was absolute trash, nobody liked it.

XV was worse than XIII and that's saying something

XIV is a niche MMO and doesn't hold a candle to Warcraft or ESO.

XVI will release to negative views (except for famitsu who will give it a maximum score) and FF will fade away into oblivion as it should have done after the mess that was XII came out.

Square Enix is done.

Why would it be the last FF they make when FF7R hit 5 Million total and FFXV at nearly 9 Million? Not to mention XIV Expansions have only shot the number of users through and makes it a continued financial success for SE? And two of those 3 titles have been top tier reception wise?

EDIT: Nvm a troll.

VIIR was trash? LOL Incredible game sure game isn't a 1:1 remake and I'm excited to see what they do with the future parts.

XV was a pretty decent game, story was all over the place but it was genuinely a good time.

XIV is definitely not "niche" with how things are going it's my favorite FF story out there, it's probably the 2nd most played MMO now, probably going to pass up WoW by the time it's done.

XVI look incredible and with the team that is doing XIV working on it, I'm not worried at all.

Square Enix is very much alive, they're not going anywhere any time soon.

At the very least we have the old games.

At least they're still making stuff like Bravely 2 and this new tactical rpg with a complex story so I cant be too mad. Final Fantasy is trash now. Anyone who thinks FFXV was a good or even decent game, then sadly I cant respect their opinion on what's a good rpg.

Cant wait to just hold down circle again through fights with the occasional triangle button press. In 2025.
