I believe Phil said they're not gonna take games away from the PlayStation audience, but that probably means that Warzone will remain but all future main CODs after 2023 or so will be Xbox/PC only.
And before anyone says "Microsoft would be dumb to not release these games everywhere, why would they want to leave money on the table?": Starfield and (almost certainly) TES6.
The best threads have polls. Just saying.
They'll keep it going as much as the marketing deal lasts.
At some point, they'll be doing full steam Bungie marketing as their defacto MP shooter.
Or this a joke, or mental illness?
Killzone 6 baby!Sony has to be actively developing several Exclusive Multiplayer FPS. To be ready in 3-4 years.
That bullshit reported from the Brazilian documents ain't real; is just PR Spin.
Do you think its in Sonys best interest if they continue to market Call of Duty up until the point where they can’t anymore, hopefully in regards to letting their fan base know it will be on their platform for the foreseeable future and try to retain them on that promise or…..
Do you think Sony should slowly start weaning their fanbase off Call of Duty, even with marketing rights. Maybe, they can lessen the impact of the franchise potentially leaving if they slowly stop marketing it as much and possibly ramp up marketing for their own FPS titles or another big 3rd party in the meantime while they still have majority influence? Say they start advertising the next Bungie game next year, or Firewalk/deviation’s Multiplayer game.
What would you do if you were in Sonys position of losing one of their biggest money makers within the next two years?
This is what I've been saying since all this happened.I believe Phil said they're not gonna take games away from the PlayStation audience, but that probably means that Warzone will remain but all future main CODs after 2023 or so will be Xbox/PC only.
And before anyone says "Microsoft would be dumb to not release these games everywhere, why would they want to leave money on the table?": Starfield and (almost certainly) TES6.
What makes you think that would compete with COD? Didn't they try to compete and all their FPS were kind of shit?Exactly!
Sony should right now have Bungie put a team together to make an exclusive multiplayer shooter. Also GG should be developing one. A team should be put together to reboot MAG.
Sony probably knows in 3 years time COD is gone. They have no excuses to not be prepared. They could also co-develop with another studio etc.
I tell you what I wouldn't mind Housemarque having a crack maybe in conjuction with Bungie for example. Given a good budget and help could be something special?
What makes you think that would compete with COD? Didn't they try to compete and all their FPS were kind of shit?
Sorry, but even Bungie can't hold a candle with COD in terms of popularity. And I'm saying that as avid Destiny fan.I wouldn’t really compare ps3 sony to ps5 sony, they barely had a working online infrastructure back then. Imagine telling someone on the ps3 that sony would own bungie today
There's your answer.Call of Duty is now a well-established brand for decades and no one will ever be able to beat it.
So if COD leaves in say 3 years Sony shouldn't try to make something of it's own? The next hit can be around the corner. They have Bungie and I'm sure they can put a team together capable of making a great multiplayer shooter. What makes you think that would compete with COD? Didn't they try to compete and all their FPS were kind of shit?
Exactly! They would be stupid to do this. Carry on as normal while trying to get your own FPS franchise readythey have paid for advertising it on PS4 would they just throw money away like that?
be rather silly to. they have another few years of paid partnership With it so why not get the maximum out of it while they can. when the deal runs out we will be deep into this gen
Ehh. Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein? So if COD leaves in say 3 years Sony shouldn't try to make something of it's own? The next hit can be around the corner. They have Bungie and I'm sure they can put a team together capable of making a great multiplayer shooter.
So outside of Halo what great FPS did MS have?
They don't need anywhere near that amount of people. Your mistaken if Sony need that many. First the game will only be developed for 2 platforms and not 5. Also they don't need to release one every year. They have GG Decima engine. Which GG will be updating continuously. Or they could use UE5.There is no way Sony can compete with Call of Duty. Call of Duty will die only when Call of Duty will kill it.
Sony would need to commit 4-5 of their own studios to develop it.
Just look at Vanguard
Sledgehammer - 500 employees (LinkedIn data)
Treyarch (they made Zombies for Vanguard) - 580 employees
Infinity Ward (they made engine for Vanguard) - 600 employees
Raven Software (they are taking care of Warzone) - 400 employees
Beenox (490 employees), High Moon (250 employees), Toys for Bob (140 employees) - all are supporting COD development.
So Sony would need to combine Naughty Dog, SSM, Insomniac Games, Firespite and few other studios just to compete with sheer manpower. And they would need to be okay with fact, that this "COD competition" would not be as successful as COD in first several years, so they can build brand recognition. It's just not feasible. And I'm not even talking about fact, that outside of Guerrilla, no Sony first party studio is making FPS games, while all COD developers are specialised at FPS games.
Sony knew why they made marketing deal with Activision with Call of Duty. They made sure, that COD was synonymous with PlayStation consoles and by that they didn't need to develop their own FPS. Now Microsoft will take it away. And while yes, series will remain multiplatform, fact that you will have option to play Call of Duty every year for 5€ per month (if you use Game Pass Family Plan) and you can play it on cheapest console on the market, while you need to pay 80€ on PlayStation while paying 10€ per month on top of that because of PS Plus is just too strong for COD players. Especially when COD games have cross-play enabled, so you don't even care if your friends are on PlayStation.
Sorry, but even Bungie can't hold a candle with COD in terms of popularity. And I'm saying that as avid Destiny fan.
You are pretty naive if you think that they don't need that amount of people. Like...there is a reason why Activision wants to hire 1000 additional people to handle Call of Duty. Because they know what is necessary to handle that amount of content on regular basis. You can bet your ass that if there was another way to develop it with less people, Activision would not hire more people. They don't need anywhere near that amount of people. All were developed by ID well before MS bought them. They are also on PlayStation. Which I'm sure you were well aware of but just couldn't help yourself. I clearly stated by MS.Ehh. Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein?
And more importantly. Do they need anything more with Call of Duty and Overwatch soon in their pocket?
How many employees did it take Bungie to make Halo? Halo 2, Halo 3 etc?You are pretty naive if you think that they don't need that amount of people. Just look at credits of TLOU 2, how many people worked on that game. And that's "just" SP game without MP live service component on 4 year dev cycle. That should tell you all how taxing is developing AAA game.
There is no way that you can develop COD competition without 1500 devs attached to that project non-stop. No way...
They own those IP's. And studios developing them are also theirs. So their previous status is irrelevant, since potential sequels of Wolf, Doom, Quake etc. will be exclusives. All were developed by ID well before MS bought them. They are also on PlayStation. Which I'm sure you were well aware of but just couldn't help yourself. I clearly stated by MS.
Jesus. Do you really want to compare 2001 to 2022? Just FYI, Bungie currently has 1300+ employees, which is more than 1000% increase when you compare it to development of Halo 3 (120+ employees). And they are supporting D2 and making new IP.How many employees did it take Bungie to make Halo? Halo 2, Halo 3 etc?
Is there any evidence that COD will be exclusive on xbox after mw2 2022 ?
since they clearly stated that Destiny and their new IP will be multiplatform
Socom is the format to go but needs a new name, sounds like a boxing game that takes place in a soccer stadium and has 4 player splitscreen multiplayer.Well all Sony had to do is reboot socom without the COD crap and bring back a fully remastered killzone 2 with online play and we’re golden at least for me
Well if you understood the context I was replying to someone else in which he stated that Sony's previous fps were shit. Outside of Halo MS didn't have any great ones either. It's strange how context always gets ignored? They own those IP's. And studios developing them are also theirs. So their previous status is irrelevant, since potential sequels of Wolf, Doom, Quake etc. will be exclusives.
What shit are you chatting? There is no set no of employees anyone needs to develop a game. How do you know it can't be done with 1499,1498,1492,1400,1300? This is the most absurd thing I've ever heard.Jesus. Do you really want to compare 2001 to 2022? Also, Bungie is irrelevant in this "can Sony make COD competitor" debate, since they clearly stated that Destiny and their new IP will be multiplatform
So again. There is no way you can create COD competitor without 1500 employees...
I hope Sony brings back Socom MAG Killzone and Warhawk to compensate the eventual COD lostNo, it probably won’t but it would still behoove Sony to have an FPS/Shooter ready to take its place in the marketing cycle. I’m ready to see Sony act a bit more aggressively from this point on

They have so many employees because they were putting new Call of Duty titles out every single year. You are pretty naive if you think that they don't need that amount of people. You know that if Sony/Microsoft said that those game will be multiplatform and they one day decide to make them exclusive, then FTC can revisit those mergers and order companies to split again, right? As did Activision/Microsoft, but we are talking about the inevitable future where these games probably wont be multiplatform.
The thing about Call of Duty is that the main series has declined over the years while Warzone has taken over. It still remains to be seen if people will continue to buy the mainline Call of Duty games at the same rate or if they'll just stick to Moden Warfare.
The Battle Royal space is wide open with many competitors such as Fortnite, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, and Apex Legends and I believe the typical arena shooters will slowly start to decline.
While COD is very popular, I think the market is slowly adjusting and shooters are more competitive than ever right now.
Yeah. And that's kinda appeal of Call of Duty. That every year you have complete package. Campaign, Battle Royale, Multiplayer, Zombies/Spec Ops mode. It's one of the reason, why COD is more popular, but also more labour intensive then Apex Legends, since Apex is "just Battle Royale."They have so many employees because they were putting new Call of Duty titles out every single year.
Fortnite is the biggest Battle Royal out there and they have around 800 employees working on it. Apex Legends has less than that.
