DF: Resident Evil 2 Remake/ Resident Evil 3 Remake - PS5/ Xbox Series X/S - Current-Gen Patch Review

- RT Mode: it includes RT reflections and RT GI. Reflections are subtle but stable. PS5 and Series X are roughly 2160p, but sometimes it can go down slightly to 2016p. Series S seems to be 1440p. A form of reconstruction seems to be in use. Settings are basically the same, but Series S features degraded reflections. Performance in RT Mode isn't great. PS5 and Series X are mostly in 40 to 60 fps territory. Series S suffers more and is generally 30 to 50 fps.

-60 fps mode: resolution is the same as in RT mode. It runs at a perfect 60 fps on all three machines.

- 120 fps mode: visual settings are the same as last the previous mode, but performance is uncapped. PS5 and Series X generally run at 80-120 fps, usually around 100 fps. Series S is similar but it tends to bottom out a little bit lower. Series X and PS5 perform similar, but Series X tends to have a small performance advantage in matching footage.

Hopefully this has a better analysis that that piece of shit video nx spited out filled with nonsense and errors. Instead of removing his innacurate video, he instead doubles down on it by posting on twitter some low contrast, cherry picked samples and asking people to chose which is which. Supposedly that they are so close to one another that you cant tell. I dont think that type of nonsense excuses leaving a video up that has a demonstrably false analysis.

yeah so DF also saw the imo obvious checkerboarding artifacts... I was kinda confused with NX gamer's video when he said he didn't find any signs of CBR, like... I did a quick and dirty comparison the night it released in the update thread and instantly found combing artifacts.

also, Capcom really has to patch the RT and 120fps modes to run at 1440p on PS5/SX and at 1080p on SS

About to watch the video. It's interesting at these upgrades.

For the most part, I am one and done kind of gamer...Are these upgrades valid enough for another playthrough?

My little VRR pleasure pearl goes vrrrooommm.
Shame about the RT framerate but I'm sure with LFC some LG televisions have a Freesync range of 20-120hz, so you'd probably be fine on both Series consoles.

Not really, no

Last gen versions already had pretty good image quality, and ran at decent framerates (not locked 60, but way better than 30)

Finished the game on PS4 Pro and now playing it again on my PS5. The difference is minor.

But the game is awesome, you should replay it someday since this is the definitive version of it.

It's obvious now that Capcom simply ported RE Village's version of the engine to RE 2/3/7 with no other tweakings at all]

Changing some visual settings would make it run at locked 60 with RT mode on all consoles with almost no changes to graphics. But they just didnt bother.

Checkerboarding is the exact same technique used in RE Village

uses 'M$' - What year is it? Not 2002.
A little off topic but do enemies in resident evil village suffer from low frame rates at a distance like 2 and 3

Yes, to me. I may be biased but I love these games and to me the unlocks and the concept of time runs makes these 2 particular games real exciting for replay value.

Yes, it's less obvious there, but it's still the same.

I still can't believe they were able to make such a powerful machine for that price.

At $399 the PS5 DE is a steal (specially now with PS+ higher tiers), unbeatable value in gaming if you are all about digital. The best decision Sony ever made was to put Cerny in charge of designing their hardware.

Though VRR for now is ridiculously limited. Sony should at least impose software LFC to the developers for the VRR games supported.

Devs should just keep their games above 48fps, that ain't asking much.
I agree with that but they should lead developers to use LFC via software in such cases. RE2R and RE3R with automatic VRR are literally unplayable. I have to toggle off it, it's just ridiculous VRR can broke fps even more, not exacusable at all imo, Sony should think about such issue.

That's why a locked 60fps is always a better target, then you still get the option unlock it with VRR to get higher frames. VRR shouldn't be used as a crutch for games going way below 60, specially when they still insist on high resolutions.

If your game is going to hover around 40fps you might as well lock it to 30 (or 40 in the case of 120Hz TVs).

What is the resolution on 120fps?

Man I really start to think this new DF guy is completely ignorant...I heard him say it has the same resolution of pro/one X on 60 fps perfomance mode...lol. ok it say more or less the same clarity but lol absolutely not.

Usually 4K. The 120 fps mode is just the 60 fps mode uncapped, but settings are the same.
I might give this mode a go, then. No reason to play the 60fps capped mode while having a VRR capable display. But I’d rather play the game with RT. They should’ve made the resolution dynamic in that mode. 😞

I'm really confuse. So this game has DRS but 2016p is the lower resolution possible. What's the fucking point to not setting lower DRS with RT? It's one of the most stupid and illogic choice made by a developer.

You're absolutely right, they should've use 1440p-2160p in RT Mode to improve frame rate. Why implement a DRS system which only scales down from 2160p to 2016p? It doesn't make much sense. Since the DRS is already implemented maybe they can change the setting in a future patch and fix the RT Mode. It should be easy.

Yes, of course, if your display supports VRR that mode should be the smoothest of the three with no visual downgrades compared to the 60 fps mode.

And yes, they should have made the dynamic resolution range way wider in RT Mode, 2160p-2016p is such a small difference that it can only do so much for performance.

They lightly touch upon it. The VRR range on PS5 is 48~60hz, and the game in RT mode frequently goes below that so it's not really recommended by them.

Xbox's VRR range goes between 40~60hz so it fares better.
Does it drop in cut scenes or gameplay? mhhhh at least 120Hz mode should work with VRR.

Drops in both, in game play it has big dips in cases where you have zombies right up in your grill and in general traversal as well. The RT mode should definitely have had a lower resolution, keeping it aiming for 4K is overkill.

Given another chance
Hows PS5 VRR with RT mode working out, they didn't mention it in the video?
It’s odd. Res Evil 3 appears to be much smoother. Res Evil 2 FPS is all over the place. Hopefully they fix it. If you have a VRR display, I’d chose high frame rate on res evil 2 and RT on res evil 3.

RE3 really does look quite good on PS5.

Still no Clock Tower or Raccoon Central Park though :messenger_pensive:

RT mode isn't great, mostly its fine but if you try the endless survival mode, hunk or some busy set pieces in the main game it tanks. This is on PS5 with VRR.

I'd use 120hz. I don't notice any framedrops myself, likely because it stays at 100 and I have VRR. I beat a sub 3 hour run with Claire and it plays really well.

Everybody can take advantage of it, you just have to upgrade your display. Just like if you want 120fps you had to upgrade your console, same principle, doesn't make new consoles "shit" just better.
I didn't say the consoles were shit, did I? I said the "solution" was shit. Games should be optimized to run at their target framerates. This is regardless of the platform.
