mpLm9.jpg

While present-day Lex Luthor is busy fighting an array of the DCU’s most vile foes over in ACTION COMICS, this year’s ACTION COMICS ANNUAL takes a look back at two formative encounters Luthor had before he became the bald mad genius we know and love today.

Paul Cornell gives us two great stories in this double-sized volume. In the first, Marco Rudy illustrates a story of young Lex and Darkseid, while in the second we’ve got Ed Benes tackling a tale starring Luthor and Batman villain Ra’s al Ghul.

A light week for yours truly, just Action Comics Annual, Brightest Day, She-Hulks and the Women of Marvel special. So no scheduled trips to the shop this week for me, I'll just wait until I'm in the area and drop by. Good thing, too, as after "Black Friday" (which has become "Black Weekend" now apparently) I am thoroughly tapped out.

Also, if you haven't already please swing by my "Titans Together" thread and choose your Teen Titans team! :)

Happy reading! :D

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
once again im gonna take a bite out of heroes for hire. as well as chaos war

Nothing for me. :(

No Batman after all the awesome issue's we've had lately sucks. Don't know what this Orphans thing is but it doesn't look like something I'll get.

Daddy wants.

And by-the-by, if anyone runs across issue #3 of this fine series at their local comic shop for cover price, please PM me. I can't find it anywhere & would happily recoup their cost to purchase and ship it too me.

Why bother with one villain for those Avengers figures? I'm sure they could have thought of one more hero :lol
Well Loki is the reason the Avengers formed in the first place.

1. Birdie, liked your Thor review this week. Glad you're back doing those.

2. WTF is the deal with Greg Land and women with gigantic mouths?

3. This? This is a cover:

Super light week for me too, can't remember last time i only had 1 pull (sweet tooth) for a week. What's up with that?
They're just setting us up for the week when we have 10+ books, had that happen two weeks in a row last month.

Something about that ginger dude's head on the Darkseid cover is bugging the living daylights out of me. Am I seeing it as misshapen or is it really misshapen?
Asymmetric heads are an aspect of Van Sciver's work that always sticks out to me.

So Ohioans! Are you thankful to Wizard World infecting Mid Ohio Con yet? They're bringing us Rob Liefield! :p

I'm tempted to fish out my Deadpool first appearance in New Mutants and get it signed by his daddy then graded so I can hock it for big money, biiiig prizes!

Lastly, horribly disappointed they went with such a flat chested porn Wonder Woman. WTF man? Just WTF? DD Cup minimum or GTFO! >:|

That cover quote has me intrigued. What the hell is this book about that I will never think of pussies the same way again?

The quote probably refers to the main character's cat, Earthling, who can do just about anything with an injection of cat juice. I seriously wish all comics were this good. I was turned onto it by David Brothers, who has written several articles on it (Link 1, Link 2). Number 12 was the finale so I'm hoping for a good compilation next year. Pure comic book magic.

This thread made me pick up King City's first issue, great stuff. Thanks for the recommendation, Mac!

Has anyone picked up either of the two Stan Lee that Boom is putting out? I read Soldier Zero and it was okay, but I really enjoyed The Traveler. Anyone else have any impressions?

Wait, is this a Rising Stars of Manga winner? I remember reading about a story like that years ago except the art seemed a bit...different, I think

Buffy, just waiting for this series to end. I would have dropped it months ago, but my FNCBS is just hanging on by its nails, and it's always a drama when I drop a title.

Also Heroes For Hire. Didn't even know about this, but as long as its Abnett and Lanning, I'll be there.

Heard it was a pretty uneventful issue this week.

FInally got to shop Saturday.

Glad to see DC is shipping more non-Finch covers for Brightest Day so I can stop paying the sh*tty Finch tax. I put up with that garbage because I'm not willing to pay the premium for a good cover.

Unfortunately shop was sold out of She-Hulks #2. :(

Drove to another shop that luckily had a 50% off sale of back issues and built a little more of my Kamandi collection:

Did anyone end up getting Marineman? I'm kinda curious as to what the twist was.

umm there was no twist lol. Still, i really enjoyed it and was my fav of the week cuz the art was so cool.

Granted, i picked up 2 books this week, but the churchill art is really fun and bright.

And seriously, wtf was up with this week? it's like the entire comics industry decided to take a week off a few months ago and now we have nothing this week

Oh. I only read the description, "But Steve Ocean also has a secret—a secret, which, if revealed, could throw his whole life into disarray!"

Awards!

Moment: Martian Manhunter shanking Supes with what's essentially a Kryptonite stake in Brightest Day #15.
Panel: Brightest Day #15
Quote: "I will fracture every bone in your body in /alphabetical order/. It's a hurt/hurt situation." A pissed off Moon Knight says to an uncooperative thug in Heroes for Hire #1.
Cover: American Vampire #9
Pick: Brightest Day #15

These are my thoughts on the comics that came out on this, the first, week of December 2010. Since I read things and these are my thoughts, I’ll talk about things that happened. So it'd be in your best interest to have read anything that you are interested in. Basically, SPOILIES! You’ve been warned. I'm playing with the format, I feel that this new one allows me a bit more freedom regarding how I talk about the books I wanna touch on. So, without further ado: my thoughts!

As you recently saw, Brightest Day #15 sorta cleaned up during this weeks awards; taking three-fifths of the usual honors. This week's foray into Brightest Day yielded an almost entirely Martian Manhunter centric story with the final two pages sloppily shoe-horning in a hook for the next issue. This latest issue of Brightest Day, penned by Geoff Johns and/or Peter J. Tomasi (they don't make a distinction, as far as I'm aware), is subtitled "Whatever Happened to the Manhunter from Mars?" making reference to the excellent out-of-continuity tales like Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" and Neil Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?". J'onn has been led to believe that he's brought back the life of his home planet, Mars. But, of course, all is not what it seems still under the illusion created by fellow Martian D'kay D'razz, a string of murders crops up. The Justice League (Bruce Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan and Barry Allen) have all been murdered and it's up to J'onn to work it out. By the end of the issue, he has, and he's pissed. I particularly enjoyed Gleason's art that had a twinge of the unsettling that let you know that something was off.

We also got Adventure Comics #521 along with Action Comics Annual #13, this week. Neither wowed me. The former was especially, with Mon-El becoming a Green Lantern and looking fucking dopey in his costume -- maybe it's all that neon. While the latter had some interesting artwork but neither of the tales really did anything for me; the lead story involved a young Lex Luthor having a run-in with Darkseid and the second story was similarly Lex interacting with Ra's Al Ghul. Artist for the Darkseid story, Marco Rudy, had competent linework and interesting layouts but more than twice, far too often, I found myself confused as to how I should follow the panels. While I always applaud experimentation and innovation, it's never worth it when the cost is readability and flow.

The only other book of note that I read was Dan Abnett's and Andy Lanning's, of Cosmic Marvel fame, Heroes for Hire #1. I don't know if it was purposeful, but Misty Knight as control so reminded radio lady from The Warriors (1979 film). Also, who the fuck is Misty Knight and why do I care? Oh, wait. It wasn't her. It was the Puppet Master. Of course. Still don't give a shit. Besides those two bits writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning did a rather superb job; my favorite bit being the Moon Knight pharmaceutical raid. Great action and great timing. I wasn't expecting Moon Knight and Elektra to be in my favorite parts but they still haven't showed their hand regarding Ghost Rider. Abnett and Lanning are widely heralded as being the saviors of the Cosmic line of Marvel Comics, I'm certainly interested in seeing where they take a more grounded book such as this. There are glimmers of hope and certainly potential, especially given the cast that they've been given.

As you can tell, I'm playing with a new format. Although I doubt anyone will notice. :lol

Hope you all enjoyed your week!

Not really a good last week.

ACTION COMICS ANNUAL # 13
The premise was cool. Lex Luthor vs. Darkseid. Lex Luthor vs. Ras Al Ghoul. Execution not so much. With the way continuity is in comics (especially DC), it seemed odd seeing Lex interacting with both of these villians. Action Comics has sort of morphed into Lex Luthor becoming an anti-hero.

HEROES FOR HIRE #1
Decent. The twist at the end was interesting (mentioned in the above review). But I don't think it has legs.

GENERATION HOPE #2
I glanced at this one. Umm...Akira meets X-Men. Tetsuoooooooooooo!!

SHADOWLAND #5 (OF 5)
WTF!! Glad this is over. A pointless storyarc except for changing the status quo in Hells Kitchen and NYC.

SHE-HULKS #2 (OF 4)
Eh. The art is good.
