Hey guys,

Im looking for a fun and lengthy RPG. I have played Zenonia (all of them) and Chrono Trigger, loved them both. Would Children of Mana be something for me? Are there any other games of that kind that you would recommend? I have a 5S, so im up for some good 3D RPGs if you know any, even though I prefer 2D.

I am not keen on micro transactions, I'd rather pay full price knowing I wont get interrupted by "BUY THIS"-prompts.

The Mana game out for iOS is not Children of Mana, it's Secret of Mana, and if you liked Zenonia you'll probably like it but it's definitely dated in terms of mechanics. Still, it's a classic and if you're keen on iOS gaming then it's probably the best version you can play.

Have you tried the Chaos Rings series? Otherwise I would recommend Chaos Rings II, it's actually surprisingly good. Fun battle/ability system, great music. Story is also unique and interesting, especially if you haven't played the first one. Still a bit limited in terms of assets (you don't have a huge world to explore), but they manage to get around that quite well I think. Only played it on an iPad though, but I imagine it would work fine on an iPhone as well.

Did up some potential OP additions in light of tonight's onslaught, each one of these are IMO OP worthy in their own right.
With the exception of The Quest expansion (yes this is a new The Quest expansion!) the App Store links are not yet active, should be soon
Great work as always, Tunesmith. Thanks for posting about Enviro-Bear too, never heard of it before but it looks hilarious.

Final Fantasy VI is coming out tonight, albeit at $15-16 bucks. It definitely fits your lengthy rpg criteria...

FF3 has been updated with both retina and gamepad support.

Sweet just downloaded it. Its odd that the description says it works with the logitech controller and no others. I can confirm that it works just fine (dpad only for movement, no sticks) with the steelseries stratus.

Just got Eliss Infinity. I was a big fan of the first game, but always found it too cramped on my old iphone 1 (gosh, it was that long ago). Needless to say, playing Infinity on my air in native res is a breath of fresh air. I recently reinstalled the iphone version of the original Eliss in anticipation for the new one, and that seems to make the graphical/performance differences much more staggering. Those come in little touches, like having small drop shadows on everything for more of an "extruded" look, much sharper (yet still stylistically aliased) edges as opposed to the crappy scaled up iphone 1 res, and an improved interface and general presentation.

Really - and I'm only running on the first 10 minute impressions here - the multitouch mechanics just feel so much more at home on a full tablet screen. Since this is essentially a game that lives and dies by the way you separate and manipulate your planets, it really does kind of a make for a smoother experience over all. Is it worth 3 bucks if you already have original? Maybe not. If you never played the original? Definitely.

Then again, besides the arpeggiator (which is actually pretty amazing), I have barely scratched the surface. Hope to post more impressions as I get a bit deeper in (there are a few more game types I need to mess around with more).

Baldur's Gate yo! It's not going to be as kawaii as the stuff you've listed but it's hands down the best RPG I've played on iOS.

edit: argh, must resist buying FF6 right away, I only played it for the first time in 2012. Too soon for a replay. And I don't know if I would be able to cope without that handy 2x speed emulation setting...

edit2: I finished Republique up last night, was a great experience and I can't wait to play the rest. Couple of questions though - how do I watch the making of vid that I purchased? I can't see it anywhere! And also, how big do you guys reckon the app will get as the episodes come out. It's already at 1.9gigs which is a pretty absurd size on my tiny 16gb device. Having that much space taken up for the next year as we wait for the episodes is slightly worrying, especially if it bloats out to 4-5 gigs.

I usually backup the episode files via iFunbox for games like this (Telltale games are other prime examples) and then delete the episodes I've completed and don't need any more from the device to save space. Telltale started allowing in-game deletion of IAP episodes with TWD but who knows if Republique will have that functionality.

I never played Chaos Rings Omega so I can't speak of that, but I have finished both Chaos Rings and Chaos Rings II. The second game is a completely new story, with new characters etc. There are some really small references to the first game here and there, but nothing of importance. But if you think you're going to love the series, you should probably start with the first one (because it would feel like a step down going from the second one to the first one).
My big problem with the first game was how you basically had to play the same 4-5 hour game 4 times in a row to get the real ending. Same environments, same enemies, same bosses, same abilites etc etc. Only thing different was the story for each pair of characters.

I've just released a new match-3 puzzle game called Fossil Swap.

Tutorial video on YouTube.

It's made with Unity3D (isn't everything). Took me about a year to make, mostly working in the evenings.

Here's the (slightly sarcastic) press release:

Fossil Swap is a new match-3 puzzle game from Io Normal which is not only fun to play, but also features innovative Pay-To-Own™ monetization.

Yjw1VSs.png

With one simple out-of-app macrotransaction, players can actually own the game forever! Conor O'Kane, director at Io Normal says "We know that gamers these days want to be able to spend hundreds of dollars on worthless in-game currencies, and that they enjoy having the option of not playing for hours on end while their game recharges its 'energy', but here at Io Normal we think there might be another way to play. We're calling it Pay-To-Own™, and it lets players purchase a game once, and then play it as often as they like. Of course, seeing highly skilled players at the top of the leaderboard instead of players who simply spent more money on the game, will come as a shock to many, but we're confident this new style of gaming is the future and that players will quickly adapt to being free to play whenever they want without having to wait or make an additional purchase."

Play Fossil Swap for free in your browser at http://fossilswap.com or download it from the App Store.

Hey all! I was wondering –and I hope this is the right place for it– which Final Fantasy game I should get on iOS.

I have never played a FF game before and kind of want to give it a shot. When I realised there are quite many main-line FF games on the App Store and I saw the prices I thought I'd ask you all. I have an iphone 5C and iPad 3, but I don't prefer one over the other for this :)

Thanks!

I've been totally out of the iOS loop and had no idea Eliss Infinity and Threes were releasing on the same night. Oh my God! Threes is a wonderful little puzzler and Eliss Infinity is like the ultimate love letter to the iDevice. Pure joy. : )

6 is the only correct answer and the only FF game you really need to play. If you LOVE it then try 4, but know that it's not as good. FF Tactics is great though.

My recommended release is Toast Time
iTunes | Trailer
$2.99/No IAP

Impressions:
Okay, played a few levels and this game is awesome. It's like a more acrobatic, more skill-based Super Crate Box, with a simple one-touch controls scheme. In each level, you have to protect your clock from encroaching enemies. Levels start off flat, but soon become multi-tiered and featuring hazards and special items like jump pads. You tap to shoot towards that spot, shooting the ground launches you upward. Actually shooting anywhere propels you in the other direction

So gameplay becomes all about timing (to build combos for high scores), movement (to get the best angles to converse your limited ammo), and adapting to whatever weapon you pick up. So far I've unlocked two other weapons, a dual shot toasties and slicing baguette. You can also customize your guy with items (ie headband, Bo staff) but I can't tell if they have an effect on gameplay or are just aesthetic

But I can say that this game has simple controls that require skill and timing to master, a lot of levels, and most importantly is fun and challenging. The levels may be short, but completing them in a single combo is tough. There are Trophy challenges to achieve, stats to follow, and Game Center leaderboards to top. Oh, and even the Credits are awesome. You can tell this is a game made with the primary goal of being fun and enjoyable, and I definitely recommend it

While it owes some aspects to Super Crate Box, I think it evolves and improves on that framework.
  • Levels that change as you play, forcing you to adapt.
  • Simple controls that work well and take time and skill to master.
  • That feeling of being half out of control as you bounce around the screen, half in control as you position yourself and time combo shots.
  • Diverse and inventive weapons
  • A sense of humor, and just addictive and fun
  • And of course, it's 100% premium

The Quest looks very interesting. If I liked games like SMT Strange Journey and Soul Hackers will I enjoy this as well? It almost seems too good to be true.

10000000 just got an update:

Novidades da versão 1.5
- Tall Resolution Support
- Lots of small bugfixes
- Smoother matching
- Game Center Achievements
- Ace Levels
- This isn't the big thing
I checked and the GC achievements are retroactive. Just launch the game after the update and they should register.

Okay thanks! :) so it isn't like I need to have played the previous installments to understand it?

Exactly, not at all. All the FF games bar one or two are totally standalone, and often the core mechanic will change as well. This one has an 'ESPER' system that I've not heard any of the other games having.

Personally, FF was one of those series I never played as a kid (I only played my first turn-based JRPG about 6 years ago) and I've found getting into them now being very hit or miss. I discovered I love turn based games (Dragon Quest is amazing, look into those when they come out here), but FFs 3 and 4 left me very cold, they're really quite simplistic narratively and quite repetitive. But FF6 is a very different milieu to the others I played and is more similar to Chrono Trigger than the other FF games IMO. Fun story, good characters, good times.

tbh I find that taking advice from hardcore FF players or JRPG fans is often a bit weird since their appreciation of the games is often coming from a place of childhood nostalgia. Being able to evaluate these games as a grownup in the context of all the other games I've played to be quite useful. I think FF6 stands up against modern games quite well but I can't say the same for the other entries I've tried (even the legendary FF7)

Awwyeah. Got the last few I was missing.

OS X Game Center screenshot since the iOS 7 app is still acting bonkers, showing I have all of them but refusing to display some of the achievements as properly unlocked, even though when I click on those it shows them as achieved but still with the ? icon. Also, banners didn't pop-up in 10000000 either, only the GC log-in one.

I was looking around and it seems to be a problem specific to iOS 7, with devs saying everything is alright within their games' codes. The fact that it's syncing perfectly on the OS X version corroborates that too. So yeah, the good news is that everything is being achieved normally, it's just that the mobile app isn't displaying it correctly. We'll have to wait for the next system update to see if these issue are fixed.

edit: it's also working fine on the iPad app on iOS 7 as far as I can notice on mine, so the glitching is only on the iPhone.

Love it. Sarcasm sells in my book. +1 sale.

^I miss the felt/layered Game Center look. The new look is way too cartoony and not aesthetically pleasing at all. If Apple is serious about iOS becoming a serious gaming platform, this should be their primary area of focus for the next big update.

Also the 10,000,000 update - "This isn't the big thing." is referring to a free update he is planning for 10,000,000 itself or is it You Must Build a Boat related?

Threes is so fucking fun. God damn.

I love how like you evolve (for me at least, cause I'm stupid as hell) from just matching to REALLY REALLY thinking about what's coming next and the mechanics of the tile movement.

And of course, the presentation and charm of the thing.

See also Eliss Infinity.

Just a stunner day of game releases.

Rayman Fiesta Run just got controller support according to an update. If anyone can try it I'm curious if it still just uses two buttons or if they actually incorporate a movement stick/dpad.

I've played one game of Threes and I can already see that this game is genius. There's just so much granularity in the leaderboards and stats, giving you a ton of ways to challenge your Game Center friends. Beautifully designed, too.

Eliss Infinity is pretty great as well. I'd recommend it to anyone who liked Hundreds last year. I would say the menu system is a little obtuse for the sake of being artsy, but it's fine once you've figured out where everything is.

Man Threes is so sick! That feeling when you get into the groove and start comboing in consecutive turns and start getting huge numbers. I still don't think I have a good strategy just yet, a lot of the time I end up lucking out with a nice chain, but I'm getting there! Just to be sure, there's no way to tell which 'axis'/row/column a card/block will come out of, right? If there is like a T shape and I move the blocks up, it's 50/50 that the next block will come out left/right, right?

Yep, going to join in with the crowd and push the agenda for Threes. The game is deceivingly simple and compelling. It's so simple, fun, and rewarding I actually gifted a copy to my mother so she can play it on her ipad mini. Can't say that about too many other puzzle games.

The sound design is fantastic. The little voices that come out from the pieces are just damned adorable.

I have encountered a bug on my Air where the audio doesn't play (did this the first time I played the game, in fact). Restarting fixes it, however.

Full movement would probably break Rayman since you'd be able to just backtrack and collect any coins you miss.

Went ahead and bought Threes. I couldn't fully wrap my head around how it plays as I was watching the trailer, but Puzzlejuice was some good shit so I'm in.
