Been one of my favorite actors since I first saw him in one of my all time favorite movies Almost Famous.. Heard that he had a history of drug problems but somehow feels surreal that he would go down that way.. Especially having 3 small kids kinda hope would help you shape up.

RIP my man.

What in the ever loving fuck!? Just saw this... I'm at a loss for words. One of my fav actors of all time. Don't care how he died. RIP Phillip.

Such awful news, one of my favorite actors of any generation. What a tragedy.

If you would like to have your spirit crushed go watch Mary & Max, especially now. It is an animated fil but he voiced the main character.

Yeah, read about this not too long ago on Twitter of all places. Kat Dennings tweeted it.

RIP. Such a fantastic actor. He was the best part of Mission Impossible 3. He added so much to even the most mediocre films.
I actually enjoyed MI3...

Fucking heroin... :(

You mean fucking opiates. HIs addiction started with pills and moved to heroin. Opiates are wretched, if we want this to stop we need to address the drug that is addicting and killing so many wonderful people.

Such a fantastic human being, I've never been one to get misty over an actor dying. This one hurts though, I will miss seeing him brighten up every movie he was in. Jesus, his poor family. I hope people can be compassionate and leave them alone during this.

I could see where this is coming. I think this guy was a great actor, but dying of heroine is fucking stupid and makes me have less sympathy for him.

oh get over yourself and stop being so judgmental….

some people choose to do drugs. his death due to overdose is more unfortunate than stupid and it doesn't make you better than him, what have you contributed to society sir?

Most people think being human is a one dimensional quality, which makes it impossible for the same person to do both good and evil. Society has the regrettable tendency of reinforcing this belief through oversimplification in media and historical records.

I don't think that is it. If he was in an intelligent man he must have known this was a forseeable end. This kind of reaction comes from the fact that his death stems from a negative choice he made.

YES. Such a good role. Love this clip.
Uncool.

That basketball scene in Along Came Polly. Hahahahah

He was the man. Terrific actor. Heroin must be a hell of a drug to be on top of the world like he was and to lose it to such a meaningless high. Hope others in a similar situation can find guidance.

I got to meet him while working on the VA unit for Cold Mountain. Nice guy.

We had a VA wrap party afterwards and he showed up in a dirty sweatshirt with ketchup and mustard stains.

What part is confusing?

Are you serious?

You act as if addiction is so fucking easy to get rid off....and the way you phrased the sentence;

He's a big boy and if he wanted to kill himself with drugs its not like he didn't have other options

What are you trying to say here?

He is a rich actor who could have solved his problems since he is a 'big boy' and would still be alive?

Are you God? Are you that certain that he didn't have any other options? How the fuck would you know what he was going through? I love when people say shit like you typed or "suicide is selfish"

EDIT :

Just saw you other reply

Thankfully I don't. I assume he knew he had a problem and had money to seek help. It's sad what happened but friends and family have a right to be angry over the choices made by the deceased.

So you are one of those people.

This seems like a hard addiction to keep hidden. I'll be curious in the coming months to hear what his friends have to say, or if they'll clam up and pretend they didn't know.

I regret saying "most people" rather than "many people", as that was presumptuous of me.

Other than that I completely disagree with your analysis of the situation. Intelligence has very little (if anything) to do with addiction, or overcoming it.

One of my favorite actors period. Ever since I saw him as the sleazy mattress kingpin in Punch Drunk Love I've been a fan of just about everything he's done. Such a tragedy regardless of how he died.

An addiction is not that "rational", a drug addict smart or not can't think rationally get it? Some of you just do yourselves a favour know the reality of addictions contact with the people that suffer from it and you might be surprised

D.A.R.E. has brainwashed some people. Drugs are bad, and drug users might be evil.

the shit shocked me to hear it, and then you hear 'heroin' and suddenly it makes sense. fucked up sense but that shit is a trap.

I'm very sad to hear this. He had that 'special something', a presence that most actors lack. Gene Hackman has it. Tommy Lee Jones has it. What a bummer. RIP

What the fuck, man. Such bullshit.

I had no idea he even had a drug problem and was so depressed. Terrible news

...Who the fuck moves on to heroin, though? Seriously, I know lots of people that do lots of drugs. I'd say a couple of them might even have addiction problems (especially with prescription pills), but they all know never to touch heroin. The prospect is so stupid, that it's almost a joke.

His death is sad, and as a film fan I'll really miss his work, but the heroin bit is the only thing that sort of leaves me saying wtf? No, that doesn't mean I think he's an idiot.
