Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday of a possible heroin overdose in his Manhattan apartment, a police source said.

Police said they were investigating a death at the actor’s home on Bethune St. They were alerted to the death around 11:15 a.m.

A source said Hoffman was found alone with a needle in his arm in the bathroom of his apartment. Sources said the actor used heroin.

Extremely upset about this. One of maybe a half dozen or so actors that I feel give it their absolute all in every single performance. It's such a heavy loss.

This and Paul Walker's passing also puts into perspective to me how out of nowhere this stuff can happen. I'm always worried about some of my favorite actors who are in their old age passing(DeNiro, Pacino, Freeman, McKellan, etc.) but at least they've had long careers and it feels like they've already left a lasting and significant legacy. PSH had so much left in him and I feel like his best roles were likely still ahead of him.

Reminded of Synecdoche New York's ending

I need to watch this movie again. Among best movies of last decade. It will also be one of those movies everybody will be talking after ten or so years.

Very sad news indeed. Was a magnificent performer capable of such subtlety. Every scene he is in was boosted by his mere presence. PTA commented on this in the way Phillip served as sort of a Greek chorus by which the emotion of the scene played out, even if he was just standing the background.

CNN (TV) live is reporting that heroin was fond in the apartment and a needle in his arm where he was found in the bathroom based on police reports.

I'm heartbroken that we've lost such a talent.
