Xbox-Skeptics: What Are Looking For Tomorrow?

- Alan Wake 2
- PGR5
- Free Xbox LIVE, or at least something similar to PS+
- Kinect and Illumiroom etc to be options, not bundled in

I am prepared for disappointment on all fronts.

I am interested to see if they try the same tactics of last gen with Timed Exclusives. That will be a red flag to me that MS is trying to pull a fast one on the market again.

I'd like to see a genuine commitment, someone as passionate heading the project as Cerny is with PS4. Basically, it needs to sell itself, not by clever marketing.

I'm buying one at launch either way, but I've been increasingly skeptical of Microsoft's vision for a couple of years. To get me fully back on board I need to see new IP, exclusive games, and next-gen games that go beyond upped graphics (scale, destruction, AI etc). Any corridor shooter will make me roll my eyes, so they'd better limit that to one at most.

I think its nice that everybody is already set for this kind of dissapointment

This + 15 dudebro shooters that look and play just like current ones

They have to have lots of exclusive games, because they're not going to have that multiplatform advantage like they did with the 360. In fact, it's very likely they're going to have a disadvantage.

Also, no crazy DRM, and no forcing Kinect on those who don't want it.

I'm looking for technical specification - 20-30% faster hardware inside than PS4 have would make it atractive.

But I only expect to get a lot of lols from casual kinect PVR presentation :D

Erm so what kind of games do you want lol. I guess you won't be buying the PS4 because of Killzone, Driveclub either? Guerillas new IP is likely to be a shooter, come on be realistic.

Are you really suggesting that there are no kinds of games other than shooters and sports games?

Show me some interesting deep RPGs, or maybe a space sim or a cool looking little big planet kind of game. I dunno. Something new and interesting. Why do I need to be realistic lol? I currently expect to not buy an xbox.. that's why I posted in the skeptics thread. Good chance I'll just be a PC gamer next gen, so sure PS4 might not do it for me either. But I have more confidence in SONY's first party games than MS's.

Things relevant to me as a UK resident (e.g. IDGAF about ESPN, Hulu, MMA, NFL or any of that crap)

Games relevant to me (IDGAF about racing or FPS or GoW)

Kinect actually being useful for something, ever, gaming wise. I have a 3 year old, I have friends who love getting drunk and doing motion gaming, I know of nothing for Kinect that I want compared to Wii/EyeToy.

Feature parity with PS4 regarding PS+ Vs XBL

To be honest, I love the stuff GAF hates (media integration, motion gaming) but hate the stuff GAF loves (GoW/Halo/etc.) about 360 so I imagine 720 won't be for me unless they massively abandon their current market.

You never see the interesting stuff at the beginning of a console's life, you've got to go for the shock/awe/Ridge Racer/ blatant lies/false promises first, Journey and ICO come later.

I don't expect them to bring multiplayer in front of the paywall, but here's where things stand for me as of now:

Since dropping Live Gold, I refuse to pay full price for any game which has a significant multiplayer component. I'll wait as long as it take until I can pay whatever I think the single player alone is worth. Why should I pay for content Microsoft will not let me use?

That has to change before I'm willing to 'jump in' again.

Interesting exclusive games that aren't shooters, sports/racing games, or kinect games.
This is why I'm a skeptic..

I agree with this. I haven't bitten on the XBox before because in general their exclusives just don't appeal to me all that much. I don't have any real interest in playing Halo or Gears of War. Unfortunately, the type of games that would make me reconsider are probably not the types of games Microsoft is likely to make.

Well, I bought the PS3 originally for little big planet, plus the expectation of a new team ico game (lol).

Of course I'm looking forward to the event! I always anticipate a good and hearty laugh with bathed breath.

I can't wait to bask and drown in the decadent next gen "Videogame" system MS is about to unleash.

All I want is for Microsoft to at least appear to give a shit about games.

I don't watch scheduled television, so I don't care about all that TV crap they're rumoured to be doing, I am happy using catch-up services and Netflix.

I want more of a focus on games, because that is what I buy a games console for.

I will be watching live, hoping that they do the right thing. I want all three to provide just as high quality stuff and do as well as last gen, because then everybody wins.

I keep forgetting that Kinect 2.0 is something theyre going to be pushing super fucking hard :/

Free Xbox Live (multiplayer) ....... use Gold as a content subscription like PS+, no more apps like Netflix etc behind a paywall, more focus upon core (or whatever) titles, less or none (preferably) Kinect.

1. Get rid of the gold paywall.
2. Get rid of the stupid idea of controllerless gaming.
3. Primary focus on core games. I want MS to show me that I can trust them to cater to my tastes throughout the duration of the gen.
4. Dump kinect. If they can't dump it completely, then just make it a marginal thing that barely gets any attention. The more kinect they show me, the less interested I become in the nextbox. Show me too much and I'm out completely.
4. Show me some interesting exclusives that aren't shooters. New and unique IP's.

Do these things and I'm there day 1.

Realistically I'm expecting:

- Twitch TV partnership for live streaming/sharing videos
- Video calling/chat via Skype
- Kinect 2.0 debut
- Alan Wake 2, PGR5, Cryteks game (Ryse)
- Windows 8 app integration on some level

Positives:

-Focus on new exclusive games, services that assist games and enhance gaming possibilities. Kinect actually becoming useful is a positive as long as it is useful in games.

Red Flags:

-Too much focus on entertainment services, streaming video, sports - Not interested. I can literally do this anywhere.

-Too much focus on "apps". Not paying $500 for weather updates.

-Too much focus on social. I don't care about Facebook integration at all. That website is dead to me because of people spamming it up with stupid shit and I'm not about to become a part of the problem and obnoxiously spam my game footage. I don't even want them to ask me to do this.

-Anything that provokes the idea of "always online". Nope.

Basically, I'm afraid of the next Xbox being a $500 Windows 8 PC with a rebrand and a Kinect included. Sell me a gaming console.

I'm in the same boat, but it means we won't be there day 1. There's zero chance MS does such a turnaround now.

Guys don't expect too many games tomorrow.

Yeah, I suppose that's right.

But that's so stupid. At E3 there is the mainstream media, this is the right time to explain the social and entertainment features of the console. NYT and CNN are not interested in Alan Wake 2. So it would be much better to show the news for hardcore games tomorrow and the other stuff at E3.

I don't like what Microsoft did in the last three years and I fear they will stay on this path (Kinect, sequels, entertainment apps).

-Alan Wake 2.
-Halo 2 Anniversary.
-Comparable power to PS4.
-$400-$450.
-Can play used games.

This would make my decision very very hard.

You might as well wish for the console to be free, and be personally delivered by Bill Gates and a procession of models.

Also, what does "core games" even mean anymore? You will get CoD, maybe Halo, maybe Gears. With this AM's news (Kojima's twitter), maybe MGS5. You're not going to get JRPGs, unless you count Dark Souls 2 as a JRPG (I personally don't).

The next Xbox will almost certainly be a mirror image of the current Xbox, with richer experiences made possible by vastly more powerful hardware. Same with the PS3 -> PS4, as was made evident by Sony's unveil.

Anyone expecting a sea change in strategy is fooling themselves.

I will just say what could sell me on an xbox

$299-$399 unsubsidized
Used games are fine
No always online
No kinect, at all, i hate that fucking thing
Same controller but improved D-pad, face buttons and bumper buttons
Exclusive 1st/2nd party IP's and not a whole show of third parties
end the show with Halo 5

In other words i expect to be horribly disappointed.

I'm looking for a console whose primary purpose is not turning my TV into a giant billboard. I'm also not looking forward to paying a monthly fee to bypass a paywall.

I fully expect to be disappointed.

free multiplayer
no online only
no anti used drm

of course more exclusive games (this is more for E3 than tomorrow event)

Isn't the new xbox rumoured to have Kinect 2.0, then no.2 & 4 are out.

1. I'm looking for an already slim console, I don't want to buy a console then a slimmer version comes out 2 years later.
2. New IP's but nothing as ridiculous as when they showed the game "LocoCycle" last year.
3. Make Gold worth it compared to competitors.
4. Improve Kinect camera distance, I have to essentially re-position my furniture when I want to play a Kinect game.
5. Music player output in full surround sound - I stream music from my computer or Xbox Music yet only outputs in Stereo.
6. No always Online, if recent events (SimCity) are to go by, always online is a pain.

- specs comparable to PS4 (or at least not significantly weaker)
- free online gaming, Gold Live becomes similar to PS+ (not gonna happen ever, but one can still hope)
- new controller (although quite similar to the present one)
- console will be shown
- several games (COD, next gen Halo/Forza/Fable, Respawn's game), almost no tech demos (perhaps 1-2 brief ones)
- EA partnership info
- new Live features
- expanded Live support for emerging markets (not likely on this reveal, more likely at E3)
- Kinect/media features galore - these will most likely dominate the presentation

I consider myself a skeptic, as I've never owned a 360. So I'm looking for price, backwards compat, and the controller. I'm also interested in the subscription details, as that's probably the main thing that drives me away. Don't want to pay for a service and be served ads at the same time. I've got cable for that now.

I want to see a few games playing.

Sony's conference was months ago, and they managed Killzone, Knack and MM demo to show the console in action.

Online play minus paywall.
More exclusives.
Decent price.
Better Japanese support for niche games (like Tokyo Jungle and Pushmo).

exclusive CONTENT and an amazing EXPERIENCE.

jk. I do really hope they don't focus on netflix or NFL-deals or something only the US is interested in.

Because music is (generally) mixed in stereo. Only SACD's and DVD-Audio have music mixed in surround sound, even those are rare.

I didn't have a XBOX or a 360.

But if Kinect is improved a lot and becomes an integral part of gaming for them, then I may well be tempted by the next one.

-A strong investment in alternate inputs that doesn't look like a mess.
-A strong push for something that's different, enough ideas that it's not the same thing as PS4.
-A reduction of XBLG exclusive features especially ones present on other consoles.
-Interest in mid-sized gaming. Not just indies and not just AAA.
-Reduction of the following topics in games: shooting, killing, sports, sim racing and dude bros.
-Increase in non-violent, less masculine topics but with strong investment to back them.

More new IPS.

I don't care about Halo or Gears. I really don't care about Kinect either and i don't particularly like paying to play online.

What is going to kill any and all interest for me on nextbox is if 3 things happen.

1. Forced Kinect w/ most new ips being kinect only
2. Online only
3. heavy focus on being a "set top box" i buy gaming consoles for the games. I dont give a shit about it being a DVR or that its a media hub or any of that shit because i have multiple set top boxes that do that and do it for free.

Tomorrow and E3 will determine if i ever get a nextbox. If their focus this gen is too heavy on media living room takeover and casual stuff then no thanks. I buy video game consoles for the video games. I don't give a shit how many apps you have, how many video services you have or if you act as a cable box. I own a WDTV, Boxee and DVR.

What am i looking for?

1. Strong push for core gamers (IE new IPS, not just Halo 19 and gears 8)
2. Strong push on indie stuff and a improved XBLA
3. Improved XBL, if i am going to be forced to pay you to play my games online make it fucking worth it. Timed demos and the ability to voice chat is bullshit. PS+ is a real competition and i don't even need it to play online so step your game up for christ sakes. It's pathetic.
