Variety said:
It looks like Mary Jane Watson is back in Peter Parker's life, as "The Descendants" star Shailene Woodley is in early talks to play the redheaded love interest in Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."
Woodley is the studio's leading choice to join stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the Marc Webb-directed sequel, which is preparing to start casting. Character breakdowns have gone out to talent agencies and Electro is rumored to be one of the villains the filmmakers are considering for the next installment of the hit comicbook franchise.

In addition to Mary Jane Watson and an unspecified villain, the studio is seeking an actor to play Harry Osborn, Peter Parker's best friend and eventual enemy, who was played by James Franco in Sam Raimi's original trilogy that starred Kirsten Dunst as M.J.

With production not starting until early next year, the studio still has plenty of time to decide which Marvel villain will battle Spider-Man. One of the options, Electro, is the namesake of Max Dillon, an enemy of Spider-Man who gains the ability to control electricity after being struck by lightning. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #9 in February 1964.

In "The Amazing Spider-Man's" post-credit sequence, set inside Dr. Curt Connors' cell at an asylum, the Lizard is approached by a mysterious, shadowy figure (Michael Massee) who asks if Peter Parker knows the truth about his father. Lightning features prominently in the scene.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the sequel, whose screenplay will be credited to frequent tentpole scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as Jeff Pinkner, based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" grossed $751 million worldwide and the sequel is skedded to swing into theaters in 3D on May 2, 2014.

Woodley was nominated for a Golden Globe and won an Independent Spirit Award for her perf as George Clooney's eldest daughter in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants." She was flooded by movie offers in the wake of the film's success, but remained focused on her ABC Family series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," which will end its run after its upcoming fifth season. Thesp is attached to star in Gregg Araki's indie drama "White Bird" and recently wrapped James Ponsoldt's "The Spectacular Now" with Miles Teller.

She's repped by Paradigm, the Savage Agency, Principato-Young Entertainment and Felker Toczek Gellman Suddleson.

This news comes on the heels that Marc Webb will return to direct and Andrew Garfield will be back as Spidey. See this thread for those details.

I'm not much for Electro to be honest. Also I don't find Shailey to be a modelling hot MJ.

I'm still very much looking forward to this film. I love my Spdiey.l

Not a fan of this new Spiderman series, but I think Electro is a decent villain to use. Who else are they going to use now that isn't fresh in everyone's mind? Nice change of pace compared to the typical mad scientist.

Whoever she is, she has to be a step better than Dunst.

Since MJ is coming... it's safe to say Gwen is already dead, huh?

Emma Stone for MJ.

The first ASM was terrible. With Orci/Kurtzman in tow I don't expect this to be any better.

For those poo-pooing Shailene Woodley for MJ, she's not going to be a model if they keep to the Ultimate Spider-man influence.

Think of the post credits scene and another almost throwaway scene for Amazing Spider-Man:
The guy with a hat only appears and disappears when lightning flashes. There's also when Peter is using Bing and a name in one of the articles is Max Dillon, aka Electro.
Both pretty good indicators that Electro would be the next main villain. I hope it doesn't go the way of Spidey 3 where we have 3 villains at once, then 2, then 3, without it being really clear.

She is NOT the right look for MJ.

She needs to look spunky when she calls him "Tiger."

As for Electro? Well fuck, why not just make the lead villain Rhino if you want a shit enemy for spidey to go toe to toe with.

Pick something bad ass like:

Carnage
The Hunter
King Pin(could work with him having goons under him for Spidey to deal with like Electro, Rhino, etc and then releasing those big ass spider/scropion mechs towards the end of the film onto the town)

..electro...? welp spiderman may be returning to the fold at marvel if they start tanking the franchise. I suspect now that DD , GR and Punisher are back , xmen will be next after Xmen First Trash tanks, and they cut corners on The Wolverine.

I have to second that. There's no hope for the franchise anyway, so they should just try to maximize Stone's screentime. Orci / Kurtzman can make a 'long lost, red headed twin' storyline work.

Cautiously optimistic. Liked the first one after it found its stride despite the editing troubles it clearly had. Especially dug the stunts, best Spider-Man "feel" to it by far.

Villain*s* has me raising my eyebrows, but I'm down. Just do it well. Electro could be done well, and with Harry/MJ being introduced in this one, I could see them setting up Goblin for the last one and then bye-bye Gwen (they better have the balls to do it >:|).

I can see her as MJ, especially as a younger one if this is still at Midtown High. A little more character growth towards becoming a more responsible Spidey (that still doesn't have it all figured out) is what I expect, too. I understand him being somewhat of a dick in the first because he isn't the moral compass of the MU as a kid...that comes later, so I'd guess that some nudging towards that is in store.

I like the new take on it for potential, if nothing else.

Orci and Kurtzman better stay away from story, let em blow stuff up if they want to.

I think Electro could carry a movie, it's all about how they frame him. He could be just as BS tier as an allpowerful Sandman or HydroMan if the writers want him to be, or he could be as weaksauce as Rhino.

Personally, I want to see Mysterio on the big screen. Would allow for all kinds of stuff.

lol, Kraven is not badass. Kingpin would be best that way you can incorporate Hobgoblin and others in there.

Dear God, this is going to seem even more like High School Musical than the original. Shailene Woodley looks like she stars in Disney Channel shows.

Kraven's last hunt disgress. And the Kingpin rights are tied to Daredevil.

Doesn't Kraven actually kill Spidey in one of the comics? I swear I had that one when he did it.

He tranquilized Spiderman and buried him alive, then he dressed up as Spiderman to get inside his head.

To me he wasn't "somewhat of a dick," he was a dick in ASM. He was totally unlikeable as a protagonist and constantly made selfish/vengeful/whiny choices throughout the whole film, even in the ending where he
ignored Stacy's dying wish
. This may have been setup for something down the line, but there has to be a glimmer of heroism in him if I'm going to like the main protagonist. Garfield's take on the character wasn't much better than Tobey's (which it pains me to say).

Tombstone would be a great choice if they go down the gangland route. They mention Bens killer belonged to a larger gang if I remember.

Electro ? that Villain is LAME !! why not Shocker ?

Shocker is much less of a headliner than Electro IMO. There's no real way to "buff" him to match Spider-Man for an extended period of time. He just shoots stuff.

Random statement: Taskmaster would be a helluva villain for Spider-Man.

It would be absolutely hilarious if Emma Stone played the role of MJ. Gwen would die in the first 10 minutes, and then MJ will be the new girl in school. Peter will be like "OMG you remind me of this girl I knew. Let's fuck"

Taskmaster would be rad, but I equate him more as a Cap villain.

I'll probably take Scorpion, Mysterio or even Jack O'Lantern.
