710k last quarter, multiply by 4, that's approx. 2.84 Wii's expected to sell this fiscal year. That sounds about right. 10.5-3 That leaves us with about 7.5M Wii U's expected to be sold before April 2013. That's.....ambitious?

Uh why would you multiple a system's weakest quarter by 4 for a good estimate? Wii will likely hit the 99 dollar pricepoint with some pretty good bundles before Wii U comes out especially if Wii U is above 300 dollars. Just Dance 4 is still coming out on the Wii and that 99 dollar Wii last year had parents rushing to get it. The Wii isn't going to have an amazing holiday, but I would be shocked if it sold less than 4 million this FY.

@ Nintendo for continuing to sit on good info.

Oh well. The wait should be worth it.

I acknowledged my flawed math. Move along....

10 million Wii & Wii U's seems a little optimistic, but not so out of line that it's silly.

Wii was an instant fad hit and sold 5.84 million in its first fiscal year (remember that's two quarters and also includes Jan-Mar). Surely they could have sold more if supply met demand back then... But they didn't expect it to hit as well as it did, with GameCube being their previous console.

It's also a bit pompous if they predict a similar success out of the gate with Wii U. It's coming off a very successful console, but that console is pretty much deader than dirt ATM.

In the two fiscal quarters of 3DS, that sold 4.32 million, but that was without the benefit of a holiday or great software. The odd launch date and high price hurt it, but it was the successor to the friggin' DS, which is the best selling handheld of all time.

Wii's slid from around 20 million a year, to 15 m, to about 10 m. So 5 million Wiis is definitely attainable, but with no software that's a tough road. If they do a last ditch $99 tag (inventory clear out) during the holiday season maybe I could see it.

A safer prediction would be around 8 million (3.5 m Wii and 4.5 m U) with anything higher being gravy and something to boast about.

I wonder what the first two GC quarters looked like? Fake edit: Looks like about 3.8m, with heavy competition from the existing PS2 and new Xbox. Hmm.

GFAQs already has a thread dedicated to everything he said today, so I'm sure it'll be there if it isn't already.

I did, but there's no reason to argue about it. I was just trying to level with ShockingAlberto.

Not yet, but I'm sure he will be soon.

If RMC doesn't have it up by tomorrow, I'll send it to him. Might as well, haha.

Should I make a thread about there being a Japanese Nintendo Direct for Dragon Quest X? It is new news, but I'm guessing a new thread would be made after it happens containing the actual new info (and the people who would watch it may already know about its existence). It's mentioned in the 11 minutes of DQX thread too.

Then...why would you buy a Nintendo system? The amazing western support?

"really" means "mostly". I like Zelda....and Metroid Prime. Typically that's enough for me to buy a Nintendo system. RE is good too but the last one I played was 4. Other than that I'm struggling to think of any Japanese games I actually like.

Well we know you are dudebro incarnate so you don't count. :p

Man, playing one version of Call Of Duty in a generation really tarnishes one's rep does't it! :)

I'm just so, so so hankering for some good Western support. Ubisoft is doing well so far, I just want to know once and for all what to look forward to.....or not.

What info? Wii U weaker than Vita confirmed?

Just that there are games in the pipeline that haven't even been publicly hinted at that had me excited for E3, only to learn after the fact (since I hadn't been in the loop on things for awhile) that Nintendo releases info only so far out. So knowing games are coming kept me from flipping tables due to Nintendo's press conference, but I'm ready to know details just like the rest of you.

You know you have all the CoD and BF games.

I agree with you though.

ShockingAlberto's info was already put up on that place where you go for nintendo information like yesterday. Anyway, I think pricing is going to be the key in drawing in a mass audience this holiday. The iPad 7inch is going to be a huge deal for people and if Nintendo overshoots the price too much they could have issues.

However, even if publishers to go the whole "Bigger, faster, stronger" when the next 720/PS4 come out, Wii U may very well be downport friendly.

This, I don't see third party publishers abandoning the Wii U for two consoles that won't destroy the Wii U in power like the Wii vs PS3/360, if it has the sales the Wii U will do just fine.

Edit: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=484022

Is is possible that one of the TBA platforms is Wii U?.

Looks like September is going to be Wii U month since Nintendo isn't going to release the 3DS XL in August, and at the same time, blow the Wii U information out of the cannon. So that leaves 2 months of Wii U focus before launch......I think it might actually be a good plan since Nintendo will be showing off a ton of Wii U games and then they will be released shortly after that.

A win win?

I can only dream.

I think/hope third party's will be more smarter next gen than they where this gen, I think ignoring the Wii was a mistake, especially for the companies that went bankrupt because of the cost to make games on the 360/PS3.

I think Nintendo should have given more then two months notice for price/date and whatever other details we'll get in September as the average consumer might need more notice, they just happen to walk into ads in Wal-Mart, they don't actually see Nintendo Direct's so only a two month notice might make the Wii U sneak up on them. It's to late now though as Nintendo decided to wait this long and they can't really make August Wii U month with the XL coming, they have to wait until September at this point. For people on gaf like us I imagine September will work out fine, we all wanted info early but at the end of the day two months is probaly enough notice for the gaming community.

I said a couple times earlier today that I don't see them giving any big details in August because even though the XL will come out earlier in other areas Nintendo knows that news released in Japan will travel to the states and they wouldn't want to announce any big Wii U stuff right next to the launch of NSMB2 and the 3DS XL, maybe a couple Japanese third-party games that won't get released outside of Japan this year could be found out about in August as that wouldn't effect the XL launch, but nothing major will come in August. It makes sense for them at this point to wait till early September and have an information blow-out.

I can't wait to see how they market the Wii U. The non-specific action figure scene was a bit to corny for my tastes so I hope they don't go in that direction with Wii U commercials.

Also, Nintendo is going to have a harder time advertising the Wii U compared to the Wii. It was for more easier to show how the Wii worked and easier to understand as well. They have to show that the Wii U is a completely new console while, at the same time, advertising the fact that it can use Wii accessories. On top of that, they have to explain how the Wii U gamepad is not a tablet computer and how the gamepad interacts with the television. Oh, and the online of course.

They should have just released information earlier to try and stop people buying the other machines. No need to do their blowout marketting campaign now, but they could have got the ball rolling sooner.

^This, and just in case people are confused they should say in the commercials "are next generation console" and make sure they show console well.

I still think though they should of made the design of the console completely different.

Exactly. They should have given info sooner but now they are kind of forced to wait until after the XL launch. Posted a few pages back my whole thoughts on Nintendo not allowing people to talk/show their games and how much I hated that. I used Darksiders 2 as an example, Nintendo hasn't allowed the Wii U version to be shown so they've given no incentive for multi-platform owner's like me to wait for the Wii U version, and as you said people that might want to buy a cheaper 360/PS3 now haven't been persuaded to wait for the Wii U either as the Wii U campaign hasn't even started yet, despite E3 being in the rear-view mirror. Allowing Wii U versions of third-party games to be shown and talked about early in the year could help sell people on the Wii U early.

I "this" your "^this". Nintendo has a lot of info they need to push in their advertising and information packed 20 second TV spots are going to be a challenge to produce. Time and time again people who have played the Wii U state they never realized how fun and innovative the Wii U was until they actually had hands on time. I do think marketing and advertising will be a huge necessity for Nintendo this generation and quite frankly that has me a little worried. I dont' watch very much television but I can't think of the last time I saw a Nintendo commercial. Although, if the rumors are true and Nintendo focuses on a strong retail presence at launch and has trained helpers explaining the Wii U to customers some of my fears will be calmed.

Either way, the Wii U is a day one purchase for me and I can't wait.

Pretty much, a lot of good advertising is what the Wii U needs, maybe something as epic as "Wii would like to play" commercials.

Yup. It's not just about the hardware but the software too. There's a number of games coming before the Wii U launch that will be on all platforms and Nintendo should try and get people to hold off and get it on Wii U. Especially when it effectively costs Nintendo nothing lift the NDA.

The Legend of Non-Specific Action Figure. Developed by Retro Studios.

And a 3DS spin-off, The Legend of Non-Specific Action Figure: The Revenge of Iwata's Bananas.

Yes, we've cracked it. Those are the games Retro has spent all their time on.

I do hope Nintendo fully understands how important is it is for 3rd party core games to sell. They can assume a lot about 3rd party support but that doesn't mean it will come true. Especially western support. They assumed a lot about the Wii in the wake of skyrocketing budgets, etc and they were wrong. They can just as easily be wrong about the Wii U. I said before if the Wii U launch is a success on the backs of Mario, Lego, Rayman, Rabbids, Just Dance 4, etc you can kiss 3rd party support goodbye in regards to core games. It will be a repeat of the Wii on the software side. Not because of power but because 3rd parties will think there is no audience.

That could happen if they keep the NDAs up. They need to let developers talk about the Wii U versions of games. Especially those coming very soon for the other systems. People need a reason to hold off and/or spend full price for ports that will cost significantly less on other systems by the time the Wii U launches. System which themselves should cost less by the time Black Friday hits.

I think you have your hopes too high. lol

That's how I feel, I know the Wii U won't get every third party game but it could be just as good as the PS4/720.

Yeah, personally I hope Zombi U, Assassin's Creed 3, COD:BO2, Darksiders 2, etc sales great and Just Dance 4, Rabbies Land, sales ok.

I think since they are all launch titles with a limited user base, 500k for ZombiU, BLOPS2 & AC3 would be acceptable for Ubisoft and Activision. I could see BLOPS2 getting close to a million but I think it's asking a bit much.

After Ubisoft revealed that their budget is going to be pretty low on Wii U ports, they could be making some really good money at launch.

Yeah I'm glad it doesn't cost too much to port, and it is good that devs have to lower their expectations for launch game sales, I just don't want to be stuck with a Wii copy.

When I said that I mean a console that only gets the causal games and misses out on the core games like a lot of times with the Wii (even though power was the main problem).

I want the Wii U to get games like Grand Theft Auto and Watch Dog and them, etc and NOT games like Babyz.

Grand-Theft-Auto-V.jpg
= YES!!!

Imagine-Party-Babyz-0.jpg
= NO!!!

Why would developers think Wii owners and Nintendo fans like this really kiddy kind of games?, this is horrible lol.

Sorry, just had to vent about shovel ware that came to the Wii for the past 6 years.

Its going to take Nintendo buttering up 3rd parties a bit to get support partially but its also going to be on gamers to buy the stuff.

Yes Nintendo console owners get to put up with tests. Sucks sure but thats the reality of it all. You cant say you want all these big titles then refuse to buy them when they do show up.

Gamers have to show they want the titles there with more than just words.

What Nintendo needs to remember is that their first party titles MUST be good enough to sell the system without any help from third parties. Otherwise they'd just end up with what happened with the 3DS - few people bought the system because the AAA Nintendo titles just weren't there. And that caused third parties to pull out, delay or even cancel their announced games, which of course kept sales low. In the end Nintendo had to do drastic measures like drop the price *significantly*, and even that made little difference. System sales didn't fully recover until Nintendo's AAA franchises made their debut: Mario 3D, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus.

While that's certainly understandable, I think the problem was when those test games did well or exceeded expectations and the result was more tests.

I really think it will be. Rememebr all that hype leading up to E3? (how could we forget ¬¬) That was partly based on these 'big surprises' we were apparently going to see and certain insiders saying they were impressed with what they have seen in development for WiiU so far. I dont think that has gone away just because it wasn't shown at E3. Somthing was getting people'in the know' a little excited and I doubt we've seen what it was so far.

And now SA's comments I hope will remind people of that, whilst adding yet more hype-fuel to the hype-fire :D

It's going to be a good couple of months.

That is the shitty thing that companies like Capcom did. Ubisoft at least brought Red Steel 2 and ended up taking a hit for doing so but they kept trying. You can bet the launch windows software sales will be looked at closely.

ZombiU will probably be heavily watched by all companies. If its a success thats good for the console. If it does poorly and I mean worse than Red Steel that will immediately get heads turning and projects on the hook ready to be pulled.

The problem with test games is that they really weren't games that would appeal to any sort of market.

I liked Zack & Wiki, but even if that were perfectly replicatable on the PS360, who's the audience it sells to? And to what extent would those numbers be greater than on the Wii, if at all?

The most egregious example of test games is from Capcom. RE4 Wii sells one million, so they make Umbrella Chronicles, a game no one asked for ever. It sells one million somehow. So they make Darkside Chronicles and it bombs and Capcom decides the Wii audience must not really want Resident Evil.

To a large extent, people are stupid. But I think they know when they are being shortchanged on a product.
