Too bad they had to suck so hard with the Saturn.Yep. Sony throwing its chequebook around in the 90's ruined everything too.
Sega v Nintendo is how it should have always been.

PS2 gen would have been extended without 360 pushing the PS3 out perhaps earlier than ideal. A more powerful ps3....prob wouldn't have changed anything latter half ps3 1st party games were absolute monsters regardless. To me Sony had their best generations with PS1 and PS2 in terms of software and exclusives. They were the most dominant in those gens and so many classics came out those gens. Who knows if Microsoft wasn't around maybe it would have still been Japanese centric and not as westernized.
Technically, without the PC architecture, many engines wouldn't make it to this day and many projects will be shadow dropped and the community will remain clueless about what's going on inside studios which means their voices wouldn't be heard like making remakes using UE5 and RE from Capcom. The positive side would be games will get creative and devs won't get mad at us and magazines wouldn't be replaced by internet forums and sites, therefore, we wouldn't be here. Long story short, It's a very sad boring world we would be living on.Would gaming as a whole be in a better space?

This is basically how it felt when MS got into gaming -- incredibly inauthentic, corporate, and cynical down to every last detail
The other gaming companies at least had some real passionate people who propelled them into the space strictly because they loved the medium, not solely as a business venture. With MS, it was just one more avenue for acquisition and trying to solidify their software influence.
Absolutely not.
In fact, xbox kept sony in check.
Now that xbox is gone, Sony is going to be horrific.
Ggs.
if we keep screeching into the black void of the universe about a new sega console, somehow it just might happenXbox filled the gap left by the loss of Sega, but if I'm being honest, I'd have preferred if Sega had continued within the console space instead.
Let me put it this way, if Sega released a new console I'd snap it up in a heartbeat regardless of power. I certainly wouldn't buy another Xbox.
Nor would we have achievements, nor would we have proper online conectivity and push for multiplayer. Love it or hate it, the 360 did a lot of things right. I mean look at Nintendo, even next to generations of PSs and Xboxs and they still have no clue how to make a proper online experience and on top of that they are still charging for their sorry ass serviceWe wouldn't be paying for online gaming.
It also led to GaaS as a workaround, making FTP popular.Nor would we have achievements, nor would we have proper online conectivity and push for multiplayer. We'd be playing Skies of Arcadia 6 on Dreamcast 4 right now.
Say what you want, but MS has been a net positive for console gaming.
Without Xbox, online console gaming probably takes much longer to take off. Live set the template for friends lists, voice chat, matchmaking, achievements, and a real unified online service.
The 360 era also pushed HD gaming, online multiplayer, digital storefronts, and mainstream console competition forward in a major way.
MS made mistakes along the way, but Xbox absolutely raised the bar and forced the industry to compete harder.
They became that for sure, but did they start like that?![]()

Hey that's my joke
If you finance a project you have as much of a part in its conception than the creative sideYes. Their biggest successes came from buying IPs and not creativity. Gatekeeping with their money. Gears of War and Halo for instance. Neither created by MS.

Ever heard of the GameCube? We would be stuck with inferior symmetrical analog sticks.
