If Sony and Microsoft could choose

Seems like they would rather be done with first party games and it seems like if your AAA and third party that's the better position to be in then being first party and tied to hardware (Nintendo is an exception) Both Sony and Microsoft seem to be done with first party as long as the game can have a heavy ROI. They both seem to rather be gaming platform stores like steam where they can make money off third party games or have publishing to third party or second party games.

They're obviously not with this latest pivot. Sony can get away with it(for now). MS obviously can't. The 2 games that MS put out that went exclusive are probably on the chopping block.

Sony said they aren't stopping live service games and hope to produce one tentpole first party exclusive a year going forward. That sound like a very safe approach to first party and less risk adverse.

First party games mattered a lot more when consoles had fundamentally different hardware that you couldn't get the most out of unless you developed strictly for it.

That no longer exists whatsoever, so first party games have kinda lost their way. It was supposed to be a showcase for that specific hardware config. Since consoles are now just ULP gaming laptops without screens, there really isn't any secret sauce to exploit. Hence the billions written off on both sides.

Which this is why I respect Nintendo even though they had little gimmicks here and there atleast with their first party games they try and innovate and give you a new way to play their games instead of copy and paste with a fresh coat of paint with each generation.

I liked that about Switch 2 as well. At least there are some new inputs methods for devs to think about.

Atleast they try to keep things original and creative unlike Sony who says they want to give cloud and portable options for next gen. I will say that they tried a bit with psvr.

At this point I'm far more interested with new input methods than dialing up the shadows and puddles.
