What could Sony do to win back the mob?

Personally I love the drama, so I can only hope that Sony continue to annoy more people.

Maybe they could announce varying discounts on digital games depending on your pronoun.

The mob is mad about discs, so bring back discs and the problem is fixed.

As a disc fan who can look at the situtation realistically though... do nothing. 90% of the people will come back. Even if none of them come back they will still make more money off digital sales after killing disc production and the second hand market.

The problem with Sony is it should be cooking uncharted 5, a beautiful game, start a new exclusive shooter franchise like what people loved on ps3 that gets their adrenaline up, Ratchet and Clank why are they only 1 game in?! We're supposed to being playing dramatic games!

Sony doesn't have to do anything. The "mob" is just a small pack of yapping little dogs. The vast majority of players are casuals and couldn't care less. To Sony, the people whining are nothing more than bug splatter on the windshield - the car keeps driving regardless.
This.

Sadly, and they know this already, all they have to do is wait for GTA6 to release. The collective consumer goldfish brain will automatically forget.

Hope I'm wrong, and their bottom line continues to take a hit, but based on my experience in the past...

I don't think Sony cares about the load chorus online. I don't think the avg consumer will pay attention to it until it has already been enacted.

There are 172,000 members on GAF. This is roughly 0.2% of the PS5 install base.

Let's just assume - for the sake of this conversation - that every single GAF member loves PlayStation and physical games. Let's also assume every single GAF user will leave PlayStation for PC/whatever else. It is 0.2% of their install base. Even if the average GAF user spends 5 times as much on games, you guys would make 1% of their business. Probably not even that, given the lower margins. They really do not care.

It's this noisy tiny minority on GAF/era/Twitter that might do some damage to the brand, but will do very little to their market dominance or market share, considering Xbox is dead (and I bet it will be digital too).

It's very different times now, we are not in 2013 with Xbox One.

In this world there are leaders and there are followers.

There are trendsetters and there are casuals.

This is a world of ubiquity. We control the behaviors of those in the zeitgeist because we created it and continue to very intentionally shape it.

Sony didn't create the zeitgeist. Their first party software position is the weakest it has ever been and we can argue with or without good faith to sabotage what little there is left. They should give up now and agree to continue to produce physical games and disc drives. In doing so they will retain their position of power atop the industry. If they don't and you finally see how it goes for Playstation, I wonder if you will experience a revelation. This hubris could be the downfall of Playstation but I don't want that. We want them to continue to do well, so they need to listen to their fans.

It's not rocket surgery. Why abandon discs and piss off your customers when they can have their cake and eat it to. Turn discs into a premium boutique product and produce them in limited runs at a mark up. Collectors get what they want and so does Sony. All disc versions of games are treated like vinyl and become special edition collectors items, maybe they come with a $20 mark up and a steel case, something like that. The disc drive player is already sold separately or at a mark up now so they just release less physical and charge more for it.

Since I still have not picked up a PS5, I would probably just stop buying PS consoles going forward. I was thinking of buying a PS6, but that was assuming a disc drive and BC.

This is one of the big problems at the moment. They have announced ending physical next generation because announcing it alongside the PS6 would have been even more disastrous.

BUT they haven't said anything or announced any changes going forward.

The thing I want, and what they have to do really is overhaul the PSN and the User Experience if you're going all digital. Also fire Herman Hulst.

What really makes me think nothing will change is that nobody is even proposing a boycott of GTA VI. In fact, even the people complaining about Sony's decision seem to have accepted it fairly well (including myself).

Sony's decision and GTA VI skipping a disc version are intrinsically linked, and I'm sure Sony and Rockstar have been discussing this behind the scenes for a long time. Yet almost everyone is willing to accept GTA VI, and the game is going to sell like crazy.

If people truly wanted to push back against the industry's direction, GTA VI would be receiving the same level of criticism as Sony. But it won't, not even close. And that's why we lose.

No they won't. Sony will lose 50% of PS5 buyers at that price, easily.

Sony isn't going to subsidize anything. It's all about milking the whales.

It's very sweet and cute of you to think GAF are "trendsetters".
In fact, news like that indicate that people really do not care much about physical games:

Stop it bro, making too much logical sense will have a "mob" come after you instead.

You do understand that Sony still have monopoly if they are the ones who sell keys to third party stores?
Depends on the price.
If there will be a healthy reseller margin in their bulk prices then these keys can end up competing with their store pricing.
See Steam keys.

Announce stopping the killing of the disc on 2028 and make GTA 6 available on disc on launch date or at least disc version be available December 2026 ( if it really is the spoiler leak issue).

Well, Sony said they'll continue selling games physically through boxes with a code. In Brazil, retailers like Amazon are selling GTA VI at around 20% off.

I said this in another post, and I'll say it again: GTA VI is the reason this campaign isn't succeeding. People have already accepted GTA VI launching without a disc, and I think that will set the trend going forward.

The fact that none of these Twitter influencers are pushing back against GTA VI only proves my point. And when the next major game from another publisher launches without a disc, people will just accept that too.

They don't need to win back anyone. GTAVI is going to have 30,000,000 players day one. It will probably end up being a train wreck in many respects with a pathetic storyline, shallow mission, and limited replay value. That won't matter when they make $3 billion in one day. The real harm will come when they try to destroy the GTAV custom server scene (ESA has declared these illegal and piracy) and get everyone on the VI plantation. The Payday 3 situation will pale in comparison.

People are gonna hate this post but this post is 100% correct. Like with everything the loud minority overshadows the quiet majority. This isn't including the people that aren't PlayStation customers in the first place but still complain because they want to jump in or just don't like the company (seen on this very forum).

Sony have the numbers, and they have decided that it's worth the loss.

I feel you!

Its so funny how angry some people are getting over this. As if Sony cares about what any of us thinks. Pro or anti-digital alike.

Its basically a historic fact at this point that these are the end times for physical media.

I can understand why Sony want people to switch to digital only. I think it's stupid and border-line insulting but I can see their angle.

Saying that: digital games should always be a fair bit cheaper than physical.
Nintendo did it recently with Star Fox. The physical edition was ÂŁ50 and the digital was ÂŁ41.99.

There is absolutely zero reason Sony can't do the above. Well, you know, other than greed... so I guess we're just shouting into the void.

Really not much they could do at this point to gain my favor again. They've made so many horrible decision this gen. I can't even recognize this company any more. I also don't need this to be a social media movement to "justify" my opinion. I don't care what other people do with their money, but I'm not going to go along with what Sony wants. Been buying physical systems since the NES. Not about to just be OK with them getting rid of that.

For me it's either
Horizon: Melting Sands
or
Horizon: Steaming Dunes
or
Horizon: Slipping Planes
or
Horizon: Evaporating Seas
will do

Why would Sony get 50% of the resale of a digital good, I could see them pushing for a transaction fee for handling the transfer of license, but that had better be nominal.

The other ideas are good, in theory, but it only takes an update of the ToS to out us right back where we were. I'd need guarantees from someone other than the company I already don't trust to ensure that my digital purchases are secure.
If they took only a nominal fee, the model just wouldn't work.
If you could buy a (new or used) digital game license and resell it to get back almost what you paid for it, then the publishers and platform wouldn't make any money. They'd just lose money.

50% sounds like a lot, but consider the margins Gamestop or other bricks and mortar used game stores are making.
The gap between what they pay for used games and what they resell them for is significant.
