Asha Sharma: Next Xbox Project Name: "Helix" - Will 'lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games'

They never once mentioned going back to exclusives…. All that was said was "hear you" in a response to someone stating that exclusives should return

Also, the only exclusives that they're gonna push is Windows/Xbox store exclusives like Epic or Steam has
Maybe so. I've already said I don't see how traditional exclusives could work financially. So maybe that's it. I think windows store exclusives would be a bad move as well though. They lost that leverage.

How have they lost that leverage? I could see is possibly still working out.

MS launching next gen via tweet GG Sony you are TOAST

It has to be heavily subsidized to be worth imo, if it competes with a pc on the same price point I dunno if it will be worth it, if it's cheaper than a same spec PC then it's a no brainer choice

Right now, RX 9070XT equipped prebuilt PCs are $1700 and up. $1200 would be a steal for more powerful machine with far more VRAM access.

The will never do it, but if they let you play your PC games on the next Xbox, but they don't let you play your next Xbox games on PC, it would be very interesting.

PC people could buy an Xbox and still play their games.

Xbox people could try PC games and maybe get a PC later on.

So she'll be speaking at GDC, which is 3/9-13. Will be interesting to hear what she has to say. Hopefully more than just PR blather.

So, it's fairly clear why Sony is stopping porting single player games to PC......
Now, will Xbox stop putting their games on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles?
Everyone believes this console is targeted at a very niche audience and due to the price point and Xbox's position in the current market, people assume is going to sell the same or less than Series X/S. Plus, if people are able to play on Steam/Epic/GoG and get cheaper games + free online, they are going to lose that software revenue even if people is playing on that machine. So I don't think they want to lose yet another source of revenue by reverting back to having exclusives, specially when Asha literally said this last week:
We also know that there are a lot of players who aren't on console or our hardware, and I want to deliver great games to them too.

An PC with the XBo came on it.

Absolutely revolutionary.

And they still will never figure out how to market it.

How have they lost that leverage? I could see is possibly still working out.
I think ultimately it would depend on what kind of exclusives are we talking about. If we are saying traditional console exclusive, then they would likely be limited to low budget games that can either push gamepass or push a profit.

If profit is the aim, then why make it exclusive to begin with.

If the aim is to grow the brand then are low budget games good enough?

The only other solution is to make a big bet on some Killer app and make it exclusive to Xbox and the Xbox App. They would be knowingly destroying potential profit. It would be different if they had an install base as large as Sony or Nintendo. Sony seems to be pulling back at least for their tentpole franchises in the single player space, but they are likely betting that their GAAS multiplat offerings can sustain the needs to develop future tentpole games exclusive to Playstation. It may be risky no matter what, but it's still more likely to work for Sony.

The only way I see Xbox pulling this off is if AI actually works and essentially lowers development costs. Which likely means more layoffs. Even then, I think it would take years for AI to be truly useful in the way that they hope.

I really hope Microsoft gives Gamers a good Reason to own this next XBox Console by realeasing great exclusive Video Games!!!

I mean, this is almost everything that I've ever wanted. The only thing I will really be missing out on are future Zelda releases and future God of War releases. You win some, you lose some. I think my days of investing in proprietary/closed ecosystems are over.

Edit: I guess technically the individual storefronts available on PC are closed ecosystems. I think proprietary/closed platforms would be a better term.

Don't forget 5080ti raster and 5090ti ray-tracing power. Totes only $1200 or less unsubsidized. Not counting CPU spec, storage and RAM either.

Massively more powerful than Rog Xbox Ally which is $1000. Either this thing is crazy expensive or it will be loaded up with subscriptions and ads

Thing is, if this is targeting CONSOLE players, even $1200 will be too high. That is one of my biggest problems with Xbox messaging. I'm still not sure who their target market is? Enthusiast? They can probably get a decent following but not enough to support things like growing (maintain?) Game Pass. Console gamers? Good luck getting mass market penetration with anything over $1000. PC gamers? How can I put this? Even if it is less expensive, Jensen Huang isn't walking through that door. I know there is some OEM strategy, but I fail to see how an OEM is going to make the "cheaper" version of a console with no way to use it as a loss leader. I'm not "out" on Xbox. I want to see a console that will succeed and to have a reason to buy one. I'm just trying to see the path that is going to get them there.

How many years of warranty is Microsoft going to offer for this thing? If it's the standard 1 year, they'll certainly have lost the plot. GPU manufacturers usually offer like 3 year for their expensive products.

If Microsoft tries to sell a $1500 device with just 1 year of warranty, you'd have to be a sucker to buy it.

Except exclusives work at every level…

PlayStation - exclusives
Nintendo - exclusives
Netflix - exclusives
Hulu - exclusives
Disney - exclusives
Steam - exclusives
Epic - exclusives

Literally every platform has some form of exclusivity so this idea that exclusives don't work is stupid…. The whole gaming industry grew with a tried and true method. That's method would still work, it just doesn't work for the big executives that want more and more money

You're not getting a dream machine with that kind of power and the ability to bypass MS store for just Steam at $1200 in current year. There has to be a catch, or a lot of smoke being blown up our asses.

They're not a charity, especially Amy Hood.

I already have 900 buck's squirreled away in prep for this baby. I'll pay up to 1900 no fucks given. This can replace my aging pc which just has a damn 7600.

This isn't targeting console players.

It's trying to keep XBox players transitioning to PCs, and preventing Linux from gaining more PC gamer market share. (currently ~5%).

Its defensive move for Windows gaming. Console war is over.

The "Xbox poors" failed to "jump in" with sufficient numbers with the series s price of entry down to $150 for any Verizon subscriber and series x at $350 a few years ago.

At over $1000 the addressable market is going to be a small fraction of the Series generation. I figure 10% lifetime sales versus series gen, if theres some big untapped demand from Xbox whales.

Any gamers should look into Costco if the want it. Costco gives an additional year of warranty on major electronics making 2 years standard. Add an extended year for $100 if wanted making it 3 years total.

If the Steam rumors are true, this has the potential to bring more people into the Steam eco system. Once in that ecosystem, something like SteamOS looks more appealing. Unless their plan is to really make this the last Xbox "console."

Its a PC. How would they even block it?
I'm not certain yet, I just know that no Steam = No buy.

A hybrid PC and gaming console is exactly what I want right now but I don't want a locked down box that is limited to just the Microsoft/Xbox Store versions of PC games.

Damn, if they lock it to Windows Store only it would the the ultimate plot twist

The catch is it won't be $1200. 😉

Road to 3 million sales starts in March! 😂

Best thing about this is maybe I can pick rebuy a cheap series X in the near future after this comes out current prices are retarded

I need that FPS Boost for Battlefront 2015....PS5/PS5 Pro does nothing for that game or any old game I care about

Steam ecosystem reigning supreme BS is only viable if MS doesn't do shit to improve the XBox full screen experience moving forward. MS never gets first try right, but they eventually do over time. Then they get complacent again and screws it up when things are going well lol

Also as a PC, Windows is still infinitely more useful than Linux if you strip out AI BS with things like Winhence.

Can't say I am excited, given what Microsoft has done to the brand and PC gaming doesn't interest me.

Willing to give it a chance I guess but I prefer the traditional console experience.
