Meta Quest 3 | OT + Review Thread |

I’ve heard charging issue

Twice in the past week It has not shown up as connectted on the main menu screen. Had to unplug it and plug it back in for it to show up.
I'm also a bit confused as to when the unit is powered down or just in standby. Several times I thought I've powered it down only for the next day the extended battery to show 50 percent after it being on the charger all night.
The Quest 3 could really use a few OS/UI updates.

You should always disconnect the battery when you're done and not charging it. If you leave it attached it'll drain the battery faster that's normal for any battery pack left connected to a device over night or multiple days.

To power off you need to see that option and select it after holding the button for a few seconds, or I believe if you hold it for over 5 seconds it does that as well.

The drain in standby is so little I'd personally only power off if I had no intention of using it for like a week or more.

The drain in standby is significant. 50%. If I unplug it before bed, go to work and come back to play the next day the extended battery will be at 50%. Thats unacceptable. Something is wrong with the way the quest 3 handles it's charging of the extended battery. It might be fixable with a software update, I don't know.

My headset is around 5% per day in standby, I don't leave the battery strap connected. I've had it long enough now that I feel safe to say that should be normal, unless maybe you are leaving an app suspended maybe I dunno.

I plan on getting a Quest 3 along with the charging station and the elite head strap + battery pack.

Maybe you can answer my question.
I heard that the charging station comes with an 18W charger which is enough to charge the Quest 3 and the controllers simultaneously, but not enough to charge Quest 3 with connected battery pack and the controllers simultaneously.

So from what I read here, is this conclusion correct?
The best way to charge is to disconnect the battery pack from the headset, then put headset and controllers in the charging station, and charge the battery pack via separate cable?

From what I've seen and read the batteries on the controller almost never need to be charged. Well say compared to a PSVR2 which lasts ~4 hours, these might last 40-100 hours I'm not sure yet. Maybe more, I've read previous Quests batteries could last an entire year almost.

Anyway, I don't use the charging station, I use the battery strap in this way:

- Is the Quest headset below 50%? If not, I don't plug in the small cable to the headset it just floats there alongside it.
- Once the headset battery is lower - or if I knew I'd be using it for 3+ hours, I plug it in to the headset. The battery strap instantly increases your battery in the UI to the (weighted) average of the two devices, which is cool, and also gives you individual readings on the battery strap's battery and main headset.
- The battery strap can charge the headset while you're gaming, so if you plug it in at 20%, the battery strap will go from 100>0 over a few hours while the headset goes from 20>80 or whatever over those few hours of use, then when the battery strap is dead, your headset will be fairly charged and good for a few more hours as well.

- Now once it becomes time to charge the two devices, I just plug in a USB-C cable to the battery strap USB-C port on the back of the headset, while the battery strap is attached, this will result in the headset and battery strap both charging to full.

- Finally, once charged, I disconnect the battery strap from the headset port, and return to the case. Since the combined battery life is around 5 hours I'd guess, I don't really need to charge it every time I use it, I generally charge ever 2 or 3 days of use, if I'm getting a good hour a day w/ it.

I see no reason why your question would be true. IMO the controllers use almost no power, if they drew 4W (2 each) I'd be shocked. Regardless, even if the charger could only output 5W and not 18W I don't see why it would matter. The attached battery strap / headset would eventually charge, at any rate, it's just a matter of how long. There's almost no devices outside older laptops that really need a set amount of power to charge. So I'd be shocked if that were actually true. I plugged a slow USB power bank to the battery strap while plugged in to the headset and it output ~7W and charged the devices fine. But maybe something is weird about that charger, though I really doubt it. One of the selling points is it is able to charge the headset and battery strap together.

I always play with the elite strap battery plugged in. My thinking is since it drains the strap battery first before draining the headset it would increase the longevity of headset battery.

I don't think so, if anything it would be better to allow the battery strap to give its full output if you start it when it isn't full charged. But I doubt it matters much. In my head it's like how if you just leave a phone at 100% with a power bank connected to it, the power bank will drain in a few days, even though the phone if left unplugged might have only lost 30% power over those two days, or less. Power banks are less efficient when constantly sending small amounts of power over IMO, plus I imagine if the device thinks it is connected to power it operates a bit more aggressively too.

Anyway, the real risk of doing that IMO is you are never allowing the headset to cycle its battery if you always leave it connected and normally have sessions that don't deplete your battery strap (under 2 hours). Then your headset will just always be at 100% and never drop which is bad for the battery - see right on the help menu in the Quest 3 itself - it tells you for extended battery care they recommend charging the headset once it is below 50% battery.

Either Meta's QA sucks or their threshold for defects is way too high. I've got 3 headsets. 2 had dead pixels and 1 had tracking issues. Getting 2 more headsets and if I can't find a good one I'm giving up.

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer. I got the info from a YouTube channel that gave an overview about all the accessories. But it doesn't make much sense indeed.

Panels are optically scanned for dead pixels, they're shipping them on purpose hoping people don't care or notice.

Well whatever Meta is doing they suck. I've got 5 different headsets and every single one has a dead pixel. I am done. Not even remotely worth my time.

This is what I do too. I leave the battery connected to the headset 100% of the time, when I'm using it and charging it. When I'm finished with the headset I power it off and put it on to charge if the headset battery is below 50% and so far when I come to use the headset the next day both the headset and strap batteries are at 100%

Just picked up a Quest 3 and really looking forward to diving in!

New the the Quest Platform and looking to do some catching up on VR games which are exclusive to the platform as well as much MR as I can get my hands on. I have PCVR with a pretty large Steam Library and link cable so wanting to focus on grabbing games unique to the Quest. Some that jump out at me I've always wanted to try are Edge of Nowhere, Chronos, and Lone Echo 1 & 2. Also looking at RE4 but have PSVR2 and think I might wait for the remake in VR instead. As far as MR so far I'm thinking of grabbing Demeo, Wooorld, Broken edge, Puzzling Places, and Figmin.

Other than these what am I missing? Drawn toward third person and Diorama Style Games although RE7 and a few first person games have been good too. Also I like Single Player ONLY and co-op on occasion. Not into Rhythm games or competitive multiplayer at all! And I hate procedurally generated games with a passion, unless they are called Returnal and I can save scum them away from their evil procedurally generated ways!

Also; does anyone have any 25% referral codes they are willing to share on any of these games? It would be greatly appreciated and I'll be happy to pay it forward.

You should just get RE4 on Quest, it is not really made redundant or anything by the remake and is unique to the Quest headset itself. Like I don't think there's any way you'd regret it, it looks so great on the Quest 3 with the pancake lens, and I've seen many people say RE4 on Quest is a better VR port than RE7 or RE8 on PSVR1/2, and the game is arguably better as well, being well RE4 the wonder it is. I take it you already played Table of Tales? I haven't but just throwing it out there too, seems to fit your requirements.

Thank You! Pixel Ripped and Red Matter look right up my alley! Fishing looks interesting too.

Would you happen to have referrals for any of the games I listed? or for red matter 2 or the red matter bundle? Also does anyone know if the steam version of virtual desktop works to get PCVR games on quest via the link or do I need to buy the one from Meta's store?

Sorry bud, i just threw whatever i had at ya. I think RE4 is going to be my next game. I have only heard good things about it. Also, I believe you need to buy the quest app to be able to open virtual desktop on the headset.

Pixel Ripped is really a great experience. It takes you many places, and this art style looks so cool in VR. I can't remember how long it is exactly, but it took me a few nights to get through it.

Thanks, grabbed pixel ripped and virtual desk top for now.

Would still love referrals for Edge of Nowhere, Chronos, and Lone Echo 1 & 2, Red Matter Bundle and/or 2, Demeo, Wooorld, Broken edge, Puzzling Places, and Figmin if anyone has em.

Also interested in NFL Pro Era 2 if anyone has any experience with it. Got some work friends who might love it.

Grabbed all of them. Thank You very much!!!
I am the one who thanks you, it's a win-win :)

Chronos is underrated, great gamepad experience.
Edge of Nowhere was good but I played it on release, so it might be a bit dated by nowadays standards.
Puzzling Places and Demeo are both excellent games !

Speaking of RE4, apart from just being much clearer, the new quest controllers solved the issue completely when it comes to aiming down the sights of guns.

Only thing I hate about the Quest3 is the battery. I want the bobo headstrap so bad now, but part of me wants to wait for news of a bobovr battery upgrade.

The bobo set I looked at mentioned something about 1.5 hour hotswappable battery packs - but yes, I do personally find my Elite Battery Strap to be quite essential, and for me, worth the cost.

My elite with battery has yet more issues. It no longer shows up in the headset as connected but it does show that it's charging the headset.
The strap also only shows an orange light and never turns green even though the headset light is green.
Should I take it back to bestbuy and get my money back or wait for an update? Bestbuy dosn't have any replacements on hand I would have to wait for a new one to ship.

Also I've owned the Quest 3 since launch and the right controller battery finally died. The left one still has over 50%. I use the right controller more it seems.
12 day controller battery life is not bad. But I'm replacing them with some eneloops.

Not buying anymore quest branded anything till the quality control reports start improving and showing positives.

I have had the quest 2 for almost 3 years. I'm still asking where are all the good fucking games. Outside of a handful of good vr games. Most are overpriced indy titles.

Plenty of people are saying the recently released 7th Guest (cool new tech and well done port), the recently released Dungeons of Eternity (Diablo in VR) and the recently released Propagation: Paradise Hotel (terrifying, comparisons to RE1 atmosphere) are good games?

Do none of those count for you? I guess you don't count other recent games Like Samba de Amigo because it's a rhythm game? It seemed like a good game to me from what I played. People seem to like Hubris quite a bit too which is more recent, as well as quite a bit of talk of the upcoming Vertigo 2, The Foglands, Vampire the Masquerade VR game, Arizona Sunshine 2, and of course the one that no one will miss, the RE4 remake VR mode.

I went with the Amazon knockoff elite strap and a 8000mah battery that hangs from your neck. No regrets, works great, costs $65 in total.

Sounds good. You got a link for which one you got?
Not a problem, the battery went up around $3 since I ordered.

UPOK Hanging Neck 8000mAh Battery... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C19ZH4RX/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Head Strap Accessories Compatible... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJJ8961R/?tag=neogaf0e-20

No joke, very happy with the products. The battery sends enough juice to the headset to charge, even while in demanding games (not super fast when it's really hitting the battery hard, but you will never see your charge percentage drop while this is plugged in)

Check out the battery I just linked above.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the quest 3. So far mostly playing table tennis. The only downside is the game doesn't replicate power all that well but maybe there is a setting I need to tweak further.
Also airlink works pretty well, I was surprised.
The AR is not amazing as it's grainy/smudgy even in good light, but it's "good enough".
The default strap is ok, can play for 2 hr no problem, I think the sweat becomes a problem first. Battery life is not great but seems it can be expanded so that's a solvable problem.
I'm hoping there are more apps/games that translate to IRL skills or I can use for fitness. Beat saber is fairly simplistic, might try pistol whip instead. Are there any good apps to teach you how to draw or art? There is a neat pianovision one for music. I think there is also one that has you repair car engines...
I like gamefied educational stuff, suggestions welcome.
FYI all quest 3 owners should have asgards wrath available (the first one) via oculus link of some sort ..142 GB though, it better be good. Will try at some point.
