I am not sweet on this thing, but I have a question...
How is this any different from 16 inch MacBook Pro that cost $3500?
Has it occurred to anyone, that in 10 years, the very concept of a laptop will be replaced by devices like these?
And just so its known, I don't own a single Apple product. But I can clearly see the potential and where this is going.

Only in the sense that they are trying to sell it with absolutely no software.
But really - the actual device differences at this stage are just PR - and whatever developers actually build for it.
Even PSVR2 could be used as a fully functional 'AR' headset.

Apple makes the best hardware and software into one singular device. This product will probably be used by every professional making VR and AR content and software for all platforms.

Curios they say "starting" at $3499. Any idea what that means? What can they possibly add to this model to make it more expensive? Or are they talking add on bundles of some sort?
$3499 is a tough call. Aren't people conditioned by Iphone to wait for next years model? Or is that irrelevant with Apple? I guess I'm guilty of that also I always buy the latest Apple TV no matter what. I think I have 8-9 of them by now. LOL!!! But it's probably one of the cheapest if not the cheapest Apple device you can by excluding accesories, so not really that the same thing I guess.

I've always thought prices for Apple computers were asinine for the specs offered, but people bought those.
The headset will likely have very little impact on the gaming space though, unless Apple gets a lot more serious there. Outside of the obvious professional use cases the area they might grow is in 3D media. Apple might put the effort into 3D concerts/sports/feature films in a way that revitalizes 3D media consumption. That might be something that cheaper media focused devices could capitalize on (think modern Oculus Go type units).

Exactly what I thought when the iPhone X was introduced as a $1k smart phone. Surely, no one would buy a $1,000-$1,200 smartphone. That thing sold like crazy. Now $1,000 is standard with Samsung pushing $1,400-$1,700.
On the bright side you might get some high-end tech, but it's going to be pricy enthusiasts level.

Well, for one, you can sit in front of your MacBook Pro 24/7 if you want. Try wearing something so heavy on your face for a couple of hours first and see how you feel. From what I read this thing is pretty chunky. Even the lightest VR headset is uncomfortable after a few hours.
But then again this thing lasts two hours. I don't know. Seems ridiculously overpriced and I seriously doubt someone will use it for work.

2 hour battery life... this thing isn't ready with that kind of paltry time. I mean, they seem to have gotten everything right but price and battery life.

The thing is I don't believe this is how this tech will be forever. But I can already see where its going.
Eg, this headset has its battery/power unit separated from the headset to reduce weight. I can fully see even the main processor ending up in that power unit and the headset being nothing more than cameras and lenses in the future.
And the same way we have chairs or desks specifically built for PCs or workstations, that's how we would have furniture but for stuff like this in 10yrs time.
A for the power draw, it last two hours only if its untethered. Nothing stops you from plugging it in.
regardless, to me, this is just first gen tech. I am not expecting too much from it other than a general vision of where things may go with it. And if there is one thing VR computing needed, it was Apple, because Microsoft is too open and as a result disjointed to allow the kinda OS integration this kinda tech needs to thrive. But when it catches on, MS will copy. And to me, why I think this is a big deal, is because its proposition of what the personal computer of the future is, is a very very very good one.

Everyone has been waiting years to hear about the M-series Mac Pro. It ended up being just a Mac Studio and they gave it about 5 seconds of talk time. Honestly that was the most pathetic letdown of anything I've seen in years. What a joke.

I think if Apple didn't justify any price, I would be very shocked. It would be un-Apple like to do so.
There's definitely stuff that could be cool with it, but until we get some practical data and reviews on it, it will be hard to swallow for most people. And, it's okay in some respect as it's a "pro" model. There's a reason why they launched a pro model, because they know that not everyone will:
A) Be able to afford it.
B) Only tech savvy's will be buy it and then people can wait for their opinions on the devices.
I can see this thing going mainstream, but it will take a long while for people to get aboard.
1.5 million isn't that much, considering though, and I believe that would be a world number, not a domestic one.

Didn’t you notice the whole presentation was focused on social and work productivity? Apple doesn’t give a shit about VR gaming. Which they shouldn’t because VR gaming will never be a necessity.
Online collaboration, FaceTime with your colleagues (they killed a few video conferencing start ups on Monday), multiple screens setup - this is what will make VR mainstream.

It will not, since you need a tactile input device to really put some work involving writing. However this + Bluetooth keyboard - yes, this is the future.

I can afford this. Will I buy it? Probably not. There are a lot of better (more important) things to spend money on than this.

This is basically an iPhone lite stuck to your face that make you looks dumb. Also you have to carry the battery in your pocket and I'm sure when you try it the image clarity will be disappointing like any other VR headset.
I don't see people that usually are interested in Apple products being interested in this, and not because of the price, so I expect it to sell about everything it can at launch and then go pretty flat. But will see, anything can happen with Apple.

Businesses are cutting back on expenses. This doesn't have its own compute unit, so this is entirely additive.
This is beyond more expensive than a webcam that could run you 50-200 dollars per employee.
No one is going to want to run meetings through this or wear it all day...
The only market I really see for this is maybe picture/video editing, but that'll be for them to determine. MAYBE MAYBE for engineering too.
It would actually be a good replacement for a laptop if it offered what a laptop does but it doesn't. It has poor battery life and poor smartphone-like performance. If the price was more in line with what it was offering just in terms of hardware it would be better received.

No it doesn't, the cameras, the sensors, the screens, the audio explain the battery life.
M2 is super efficient, on a Macbook it allows for up to 18 hours of battery life.
