Twitter removed as sharing option on Xbox (API costs $42,000 a month now)

As you can see, there's no kind of explanation for the "disabling" of Twitter in Xbox Game DVR here, although it seems it's due to Twitter's new API pricing which reportedly costs $42,000 per-month for a "Small" Enterprise Package.

This will probably be removed from PS5 soon too, as Sony isn’t even paying the $1,000 a month for company verification anymore.

They put online multiplayer behind paywall for servers that the publishers pay for but won't themselves pay twitter verification and api fee. Limiting online multiplayer behind a subscription is bigger evil than twitter charging for APIs and due verifications.

In PS still works, I did use it yesterday in the Street Fighter 6 demo. I assume Xbox removed it because its potential low usage didn't compensate its cost.

OK. Still weird that a mega corporation like MS doesnt want to pay mere 42k lol. Or maybe everyone hates twitter now.

Probably more an issue of the principles of it. Twitter is built on the back of the content its users create, content facilitated by things like the game console integration to the platform. Now they want to benefit from the uploaded content while also charging fees for this access. If the console makers wanted to leverage data from Twitter, the fee makes more sense. But just for facilitating posts and media uploads it seems silly.

Alternatively: companies need to pay a platform for the functionality and service they use.

Didn’t you hear about barter ? Microsoft is doing Twitter a favour driving traffic to the platform in order to drive more traffic!

Then I guess more traffic gets driven.

Also, what are infra costs? #confused

That price is kinda bonkers, even if you consider that this integration is creating a lot of engagement in social media. Twitter has been on a downslope for a while, though, so it probably won't take long before it slips into obscurity like Facebook did when the only people left using it were your 60 year old parents. Except in case of Twitter it'll be the woke mob who will stick around to fester in their own piss and shit.

I am not following the drama closely but....isnt this fee a very small for such services? Does everyone want everything for free? Does FB not charge anything for their API?

Most of these social media APIs are free.

Twitter suddenly charging 42,000 per month for small enterprise, basically killed every twitter desk and website alternative out there.
Microsoft is not a small enterprise, so it could easily cost 100s of thousands per month for a large enterprise.
In the age of fuck the ESA we aint paying for a weekend at E3.......you think MS or any of these corps are gonna be sitting giving twitter possibly in excess of 1,2 million a year, for users to post pictures and videos?

They gonna have to renegotiate with big enterprises sooner rather than later.
I think small enterprise is fucked though......or they will pass those costs onto the user.

MS can't afford 42k a month. They're broke
Its 42k per month for a small enterprise.
Microsoft is not a small enterprise.

Twitter is also likely fucking with companies and charging them for each connection method.
The XboxApp can still share to twitter directly, likely cuz its backending off the iOS/Android fee paid to twitter.
MS can probably loophole this by using Edge.

On twitter you need to pretend as much as possible, why would I even share something I genuinely enjoy?

Pardon my ignorance but why does a console need Twitter?
I would think Twitter stands to benefit more from this than Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.

Smaller enterprises probably priced out in a lot of cases. But the big ones pay big millions for 30 seconds of air time during Super Bowl. Even two million seems cheap to let customers advertise for you from the service for a year. Of course, my thought process assumes the people seeing ads on Twitter actually spend on consoles and games. MS might have data suggesting Twitter is worthless to spend ad bucks on.

Maybe Elon's goal is to piss off enough companies with warchest to purchase twitter. MS to buy twitter in 3,2,1....

Millions of people watch the Superbowl.

No one has even seen let alone liked any of my XboxShare clips.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
If they want social media marketing they can pay an account with viral content to post something Xbox on tiktok rather than pay for Xbox users to tweet to each other with no outside engagement. Makes sense. Lol @ the Elon shills getting triggered whenever someone doesn't give him money, wtf?

I’ve got no dog in this fight. I don’t record and share gameplay, and couldn’t care less if Twitter goes away. But for a company of this size, isn’t half a million per year to let your customers advertise for you kind of cheap?
What is the target market for Xbox and what is the overlap for Twitter? I'm an old but I thought those under 25 don't go near Twitter at all. (nor should they) So why pay even .5 million a year for an api that doesn't reach your market?

That is a waste of money for them.
42k a month is half a million a year for a service, which has no practical benefit for them.
The only one that is benefiting here is Twitter.

A large portion of Twitter’s userbase is under 25

Agreed. 42k is also the starting amount for smaller enterprise, I'm sure the actual cost for MS is astronomical.

Wonder if it will be removed from Nintendo Switch aswell, it's pretty much the only reason I still have a Twitter account so I could easily upload some screen grabs.
You can do so now by plugging your Switch to a PC via USB, it works like any other phone now

I think I saw somewhere that Twitter was never really profitable or it made little of it. Correct me if I'm wrong. Regardless, Twitter is a huge platform and companies like Microsoft and Sony use it to great marketing effect. Asking them to pay for that privilege is fair in my opinion.
If a megacorp wants to make a stand for whatever reason against Twitter/Musk, they should migrate to another Twitter-like service. Mastodon was it? Let's see how that turns out for them.

Not that I would want it, but Microsoft owning Twitter would be much preferred to Musk owning it, although at this rate Twitter may die off soon so maybe this is the optimal scenario

It’ll be removed from all three consoles soon. $42,000 a month is insane. Again, Sony won’t pay $1,000 a month to keep their accounts verified.
There's nothing insane about a for-profit entity wanting another for-profit entity to pay for the services they consume, especially services that cost money to maintain. $42k per month isn't insane for companies like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Making billions in net profits per year but complaining that some other company wants $500K to shoulder the cost of the platform you push content to is what's insane.

It's social media platform which companies use to connect with their audience.

Old Twitter was good, because they had a function that was working for them.

Elon come in and messed up everything. From charging users to a monthly sub, minimizing your recommendations, and worse.

Companies aren't happy with his recent moves.

Twitter is a very large platform. Console maker creates a game, someone using a console shares screenshot of that game on twitter, "free advertisement".
