Well, now. This might very well be the true reason Elon lost it recently. It's not that Substack is trying to be twitter, it's that twitter is trying to be Substack. It's not substack that is creating a conflict of interest, it's Musk.

Also of note, Taibbi has only tweeted once since Elon basically stabbed him in the back. This is that tweet:

I believe #Jack is behind nostr. Towards the end of last year, he retweeted this:

While it's not a conversation had by the people in the thumbnail (that hasn't aired yet), I thought this was a good exchange about the twitter files. I hope Musk is criticized for ending it, and screwing over Taibbi.

The government can subpoena companies for private information they think violates the law after a judge agrees with them?! *gasp* Somebody better tell Apple, Facebook, Verizon, T-Mobile, Reddit ..........

Boy, Musk is onto something. He doesn’t even have to try and make a persuasive argument for his fans. Ah well, it’s entertaining to observe at least. He doesn’t have to offer any evidence, just a disingenuous insinuation and his fans run with it uncritically, without thinking. Fascinating how some people think (or fail to).

Why is this always the 'go to' because certain world views and narratives aren't adopted unilaterally?

It comes off as very juvenile and completely hypocritical in the grand scheme of things, especially all of us humans who are guilty of biases and how we project them based on our perceptions.

He replaced a one-sided echo chamber with a train wreck / shit show. A lot of people much prefer the latter. It is what it is.

It was always a train wreck shit show, let's not kid ourselves (we can dig up posts dating years and years ago by some current critics attesting to this when it came to twitter), it's just now more FFA and not as dictated curated narrated by one side.

All true, but after years of people defending the first shit show with suggestions to build a different platform, this shit show is extra spicy. Resembles a fat man who spends a day eating cake, followed by 6 cups of coffee, before eating Taco Bell for desert levels of shit show now.

He seems real salty over openai... Also this may be the second time he has accused a third party of doing something wrong/illegal without evidence. Also his complaint/lawsuit should be against OpenAI and not MS if he is referring to the training of the LLM's.

P.s. he may have a point but not the right person to say it. Also unfortunately for him, afaik scraping

Want to see why John Candy is trending on twitter? You better sign up for an account, bitch!

Sigh. Can we get a new billionaire to save us all the other billionaires? This billionaire isn't doing it for me anymore.

Not that I really expected this to eventually go down another way. I'm just glad, for now, I can still read an individual account's twitter feed without having to log in. It didn't used to be that way, but I'm sure that will change eventually as well.

I love reading all this recent Musk stuff. I dont understand or do Substack or whatever issues are involved with all these content creators leaving or complaining about Twitter. Or Twitters relabeling news sites with gov funded labels. I dont have a Twitter account, so I dont care.

At the end of the day, it's shitloads of people using a free service for 10 years, or recently $100/mth blue label fee arguing about the corporation's policies.

#BlockTheBlue would be pretty funny if everyone did it.

Unlikely..

but funny

Oh yeah, it's not like they get a ton of advertising and loads of PR benefits from it or anything.
It's a politcal stance, not the money. Playstation and their studios are amongst the most far left "woke" media companies and no doubt despise most of Musk's new policies on speech and moderation.

That's capitalism for ya.

Millions of people and companies use Twitter for free for years. Twitter finally wants to charge some money to make a few bucks (they've lost money almost every year since foundation), and users go ape shit over $100/yr.

I would be lying if I try to say that I haven't been enjoying the shit show of the last couple of days. Watching this whole blue checkmark thing crash and burn yet again so publicly for Musk when all he had to do was just leave it the fuck alone is just amazing. And if any of the rumors are true they haven't even gotten a fraction of the sign ups that they were expecting.

I'm really curious what the next fumble is going to be.

It's easy enough to understand the why behind charging people for blue ticks. The only problem is that these blue ticks have been so thoroughly devalued because anyone can get one now.

Like, I just saw that the Auschwitz museum had lost its blue tick while some neo-Nazi groups had gained one. Nobody's gonna take that tick seriously after that.

Not really "capitalism" so much as just the reality of the situation. No one in their right mind is going to pay a subscription to use social media. Especially when that social media had been free for a decade before now. It's just not going to happen. People laugh and joke about people being cheap but for 8 bucks you could put that towards a REAL service like Netflix, HBO Max, or any number of other services that provide ACTUAL value.

Twitter provides no value to the average person so this whole circus was doomed to fail from the start and thats just the reality of it all.

Loads of people would have paid if he added value to the service rather than taking it away. He should have gone after video content and content creation incentives in a big way without screwing with checkmarks or anything else that could result in people leaving the platform or using it less.

It's a little of both. Political gains along with not much concern of imitations, because twitter still isn't going to be giving any blue checks to PlayStation09 or whatever, and if people are wondering, the real account is probably the one with millions of subscribers. If they REALLY wanted to not support Musk, they'd stop using Twitter, but that would suck for them and their fans. Free PR is free PR.

Labeling a capitalist company as "far left" seems incomprehensibly exaggerated to the point self-deprecation...er, no doubt. Playstation is moderate, those against moderate policies could be considered far on one side or another.

Not wanting to support platforming far sided things of a political nature that could harm those they love or themselves, as the communities gradually move to other services, is sensible.

They're neoliberals, aka capitalists with leftist aesthetics and buzzwords

Twitter has always been a means to advertise and talk directly to customers. All of the people on it taking up oxygen do not matter in this regard. There are different revenue streams to exploit those people through advertising. If a company that spends hundreds of millions to advertise, a celebrity that relies on their fame, anyone who is looking to promote themselves in any way cant spend a hundo per year they are a complete failure.

I don't think it's because they can't

Of course not. I was responding to that poster that said that people wouldn't pay for a social media subscription. My response was that most people shouldn't pay because what are they advertising exactly. It is just a woke pandering boycott because they have gotten their way for years with free advertising and engagement. Now that the table gets turned everything is an issue. I can't really feel sorry for anyone at this point. The entire platform could go away tomorrow and I would not give a shit.

It's sweet people really believe companies are "woke" or right or left.

They only care about money and will temporarily adopt whatever is hot in society to chase MORE money.

Not sure anyone's really seeing it as an issue. Twitter gave them a choice, and they took it.

Twitter goes bankrupt that could happen. Let that catharsis sink in...
It'll be a struggle for users to change habits, but essential services have alternatives, as with most invested in a presence. All will shift to the next most reliable new auto-engagement.

After Musk ran off Twitter's top paying advertisers, and screwed long time blue check marks over with this "pay to play" blue checks... Not to mention all the different "beefs" he's had with different people, including his employees, I don't know if Twitter can be saved at this point.

LegendOfKage LegendOfKage is correct... Had Musk implemented certain services to ADD value to Twitter instead of taking value away and put behind a paywall... Things might actually be better at this point.

My legacy check was removed. I don’t post on Twitter much but it was nice to have a way to be high visibility between notable people, since there are a lot of trolls, bots, and idiots among regular accounts. But I guess that’s what Twitter is for now.

Musk didn't really understand the reason for the blue checks... And now ... Yeah. Sorry it got removed. I know on other platforms how much they help.
