Don't sleep on Gotham Knights, its a solid AA title

It's a very fun co-op experience. I enjoyed it. As a giant Arkham fan, no, it's not on the same level, but the fact that it's co-op really makes it a different experience in it's own right. As a single player game, it feels like a lesser Arkham with lamer combat, but as an open world co-op adventure, there's not many games that offer that as a core part of it's identity. I've enjoyed it a lot and look forward to replaying it one day down the road with another buddy or family member. At full price, and if played as a single player game, yeah, I don't think I'd have enjoyed it. But for the $30 I payed for it and some light modding on PC to make some of the powers more enthralling, I REALLY liked my time with it. Being able to teleport like Nightcrawler when playing as Robin with a boost to the teleport speed and distance via modding, felt like the Nightcrawler game I've always wanted.

I don't know, been playing it with someone else online and I've had fun with my time with it
I have a few nitpicks but as I'm not playing as Batman I can't expect them to have the same abilities & skill sets.
Counter Attack being missing is odd and I think that's what everyone is missing when it comes to combat.
Also the stealth takedown are completely pointless, yeah you can take thugs out by sneaking up from behind but you can't hang them from the beams like in Arkham and watch them freak out as you take them out one by one
Not yet anyway, unless you unlock it later.
I do actually like the bike despite the performance issues, it's definitely no Origins but I don't think it's as bad as people are saying.
There are counter attacks in the game, they are called perfect attacks. They arent the same as batman grabbing people and throwing them away, but you can do a perfect dodge and the game will let you do a perfect attack immediately afterwards. maybe Batgirl and Nightwing let you grab them during a perfect dodge, but redhood just dodges to the side and throws them in the air with an uppercut. The game needed a lock on feature more. Every third person melee game this game is trying to emulate has lock on.

Absolutely weird that they nerfed stealth in this considering this is a class based RPG of sorts that is designed to let you play your way. I literally played this game as a straight up shooter as redhood so why cant they make either Batgirl or Robin the default stealth character? There are like three stealth side mission types out of the 20 or so standard combat patrol missions. Batman used to be 50-50 stealth and combat.

And yeah, its a very fun game to play. I see that people are enjoying games like High on Life, Plague's Tale, Stray and they have the most basic combat ever. Gotham Knights is like citizen kane in terms of fun combat when compared to other beloved games on gaf. I can see being disappointed because this couldve been a better game, but its still fun to play when you're actually playing it.

I'm playing as Batgirl and sometimes a bonus pops up for stealth takedowns but no matter what, once you done one they all spot you because she just does that sleeper hold.
There's no quick stealth takedown and get out of there like Batman does.
I need to do some training as I've seen those perfect attacks pop up in the bonuses but wasn't sure what they was.
Thanks 👍

so why cant they make either Batgirl or Robin the default stealth character?
they are both actually the stealth characters; batgirl gets digital immunity so she doesn't give a fuck about lasers or mines or whatever, she can just walk past them.
She's also the only one with a batarang, which you can use to distract enemies, coming out of stealth she also builds fear so enemies get scared; she's the "batman" of the game.
Robin has the column takedowns and remote detonations, but also of course teleports and he's the only one that can stealth takedown the larger enemies; he can also run (not sprint) without making a sound, he's great for "ghost" gameplay.

SlimySnake SlimySnake The game is decent for now but the combat feels a bit basic in the beginning. Does it get more advanced and faster the more i progress? I played for 2h last night and the game runs pretty well outside few stutters here and there on the bike. Also had a weird bug in the beginning where the textures where not loading properly. But its all good after i restarted the game and i can run it maxed out 4K60 with DLSS quality.

The game looks pretty decent, the characters and the interiors are the highlight of this game. The RTX reflections are actually pretty low res and noisy. And on the bike you see pop in constantly from mid range distances. Overall not a bad looking game as i thought but also nothing ground breaking.

Yeah the combat continues to open up. Red hood is mostly a shooter dude built around critical shots so if you want a full melee character with more moves, try batgirl.

Do the training missions as well.

I recommend setting brightness, contrast, and saturation to 60 each. The game ”pops” if you do that, and you start to see more details in the environment. I think they made Gotham way too muted which makes it look worse than Arkham Knight until you make some adjustments.

That’s what it looks like with the adjustments.

Played a bit more now, and I agree, if this was say a Nightwing or Red Hood spin off without the Gear stuff, then it would have been a better game I think, I'm still enjoying it but kinda wished the Court of Owls stuff was left for a proper Arkham game, especially after Knight, I have like no desire to play as Robin in this either

On that, I am surprised that Damian Wayne is not in this, nor Cassandra Kane, as you could potentially have a team of Robins in Gotham

The major problem with your statement is that Gotham Knights is not a AA, but i do agree on certain things.

I am playing the game in coop with a friend, i guess you could say it's a "good experience in coop", i mean, i don't hate my time with it, it's just "meh", a bit boring in the open world, much more like Arkham in the principal mission and the important sidequest (like Harley, Mr.Freeze, etc...)

The problem i have with the game (same for my friend) is the optimization, it runs like shit, the game has stage 4 cancer and struggles to keep a steady 60fps, i don't know how they manage to do that, the cars are flying, sometimes they are invisible, that's just unbelievable.

Also, the game doesn't emphasize enough on the stealth part, even Robin who should be the "master fucking ninja" can't do shit, every action seems to start a confrontation with the enemies, Gotham Knights is designed around the battle and that's a shame, cause both were great in the Arkham series.

Gotham Knights, in the end, it's not necessarily bad, i get why some people enjoy it, i do have some fun with my friend, but i was hoping for a better game, in every way possible. The action (combat) feels too bland to be fun (but it works), and travelling is just utter crap (to be frank, it's not fun, dull and slow). Still, the missions are pretty great, boss fights either, hanging out in Gotham, beating some thugs in coop, it's what a would call "fun ?", but don't expect a great game and surely not something similar to Batman Arkham series, because disappointment is behind the corner.

I agree with some people here, if this was a more focused game, especially on the combat side and maybe without the Open World or the gear stuff, it would've been a worthy successor to the Arkham games, still alot of fun and the Batman fan in me is definitely enjoying it (so much so that I'm re-reading the Court of Owls again, its only £3 for the entire series on kindle atm)

Finished the first case file, and I love this game. It’s a GREAT Batman story with the Bat Family using the detective skills Bruce taught them to solve a mystery but with Arkham style action. Really great Batman game too many people are dismissing for reasons.

Yes it’s 30fps but you get used to it and the game can look pretty great.

I'll be picking up this solid AA title once it drops to the $19.99 bargain bin. And that'll be just to indulge in my male gaze while I play as Bootygirl.

I just remembered how they were teasing this on Twitter for what felt like multiple years. All for a mid open world game.

The game didn't grab me. Wasn't bad, but not good either. Just ok-ish. Might give it another shot if shows up on Game Pass or a good sale.

Got a chance to play the PS+ trial, and holy shit the game is BAD: dull animations, combat, everything feels so inferior compared to Arkham Knight, even Gotham is better in Arkham Knight, as if it was AK that was released in 2022.
The only thing they did well was Batgirl's butt.

It's shit like this that exposes gaf to lemming behaviour and just piling on for the sake of what seems like the popular opinion; what an insane shit tier take.

It's more detailed in pretty much every aspect, even arkham knight hides a lot of low res shit with the gritty noise/vaseline filter, the models/textures/effects in gotham knigths are all far more detailed.
The game keeps getting more and more impressive. The Court areas are perfect.

Yeah, I was very impressed by the graphics in several areas. It's a last gen game but its way better than some of the other last gen games that dont seem to be dinged for their graphics.

I recorded this video on PC because I was shocked at how good the volumetric lighting looks in the caves. It properly illuminates the caves and has a very thick atmospheric feeling completely missing from GOW's cave levels which have a very baked lighting feel to them. The lighting here is obviously baked since RT is only used for reflections but it just looks right.

The city looks ok'ish but its these linear story levels that look downright excellent at times.

Seriously, I picked this up for 50% off and I've been impressed for the first 2 hours in, if you're a Batman fan at all, its definitely worth a look at,

My only real faults with it that that fact that on PS5 its locked to 30FPS and runs kinda slow in places (I noticed it more in the Batcycle driving, it doesn't feel fast enough) and the combat tries to be like Arkhams but kinda feels like a offshoot of it, its hard to describe

Oh and the vibration seemed to turn itself off, its one of those games where its fun to blast through but not at full price, AA is where I'd put it so far
It's a AAA title that feels like AA.

Picked the deluxe edition since it was half off on the PS store. Been playing all day and ... this game is actually pretty fun? Runs fine on PS5, looks good, the VA is solid. I like games with gear/rpg systems so that aspect works for me. The combat is fine if you view it through that action rpg lens, it is definitely a different style than the Batman games. Just goes to show you gotta play a game yourself, stuff critics complained about are minor nitpicks imo.

Definitely. Critics no longer care about gameplay and good combat systems. They overrate games and underrate others based on arbitrary criteria instead of actual fun you would have with the game.

Loved Rocksteady Batman series and imo Arkham Knight was one of best games last generation. At beginning was enjoying Gotham Knights but more I played the more disappointed I was. Its like 6/10 game when Arkham Knight was easy 9/10, this game potentialy could kill series. And even worse Rocksteady waste all this years on developing some gas game which wasnt look interesting on any trailers I watched. Eh.

I was expecting more of the Batman style combat, but there is really none of that. Also not wild about having to constantly change characters. Well....you don't have to but I somehow feel like I need to or else I'm missing something. I would have rather they made the game a single player with a single choosable character up front and any of the other characters playable as co-op.

Got this of the bargain bin just to fill the time until i get hogwarts legacy.

The first few hours of combat made me want to throw it in the trash, arkham games straight of the bat the combat clicks even without upgrades due to the counter system, but this really hasn't got anything redeeming early on which will give some really bad impressions.

But slowly as the game progresses it does get better with unlocks, i think without a lock on system and a generous arkham counter system this game needs to played in a slower calculated manner then arkham to really enjoy it or else the combat becomes a mess of you just flailing all over the place.

The AI are dumb as rocks, i stealth killed one dude on a a higher level, ai where going towards him and they all bunched up bumping into a wall until one of them climbed over, so many instances of awful AI it hurts. They could have at least got this right and made the grind a bit more enjoyable

I've never been a fan of the typical open world taking down enemy outposts, but they reuse the same enemy outpost for different missions, good grief. My first night and second night i did 1 enemy outpost takedown mission each, and both fucking used the same damn place, with just slightly different enemies and mission type ugh.

Anyways story and characters are good for me too keep going and the combat is getting better as i go along.

After spending more time with the game (level 30) I think my main complaint is weird difficulty spikes. And these bosses, man this game has some of the most annoying boss fights ever. I think the game is just more fun when you put it to Easy.

Yea, they're tanky as fuck even at max level, Batgirls ranged attacks make easy work of them though

I had fun with it. The story is a good length and all the characters are different and fun to play with.

It's just everything else isn't great. The open world is incredibly dead, the game doesn't run great and after a while the combat kind of becomes a bore.

It's actually a shame because it's pretty evident they did a huge 180 on this game just from playing it. You can see everything the game was originally meant to be before they changed their vision and focused on a mostly single-player game. If they actually had this vision from the beginning this game could have ended up being just as good as the Arkham games.

What a shame.
Apologies for the light necro-bump but I see this is now available for 14eu on the grey market and was wondering what you meant by "mostly single-player game"? I mean I'm fine with it but I was about to tell a buddy to also get it so we can do the entire thing in co-op. Is that not recommended then?

I would definitely give it a go for cheap to play with a friend, it’s fun. It’s just you can see that the game was meant to be so much more coop wise but then was dumbed down to essentially a single player game with coop attached to it which is a shame.
