35+ years of gaming and life experience, I don't need a source to tell me that Sony won't charge more than the retail difference between digital and physical edition console. It's called simple analytics, logic and business 101.
So you got nothing but conjecture lol

The question

――The PS5 is now entering its third year. PS4 Pro was released three years after its release, but we would like to hear about your future prospects.

Nishino We believe that cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units by the end of FY2022, and this will be a very important period for our platform. We won't talk about anything specific this time, but we hope you can look forward to more next year

Yes, it will be an important year for them: they will release PSVR2, in theory will be the first one without important chips shortages, they'll start publishing tv adaptations of their IPs, they'll release big exclusives like Spider-Man 2 or Final Fantasy XVI, pretty likely will make a strong year regarding SIE acquisitions and pretty likely will release PS Plus cloud gaming on mobile and tvs. Very likely they'll show or announce big 2nd party projects, many of them not released this year, with different important teams from console (in console the Firewalk/Deviation/Haven/Arrowhead games, in mobile/PC GaaS with different partners as could be the rumored NCSoft game).

Also, very likely it's going to be the year where they'll stop making first party crossgen games and the year where they'll show the first next gen only games starting to take full advantage of the next gen hardware. I don't think they'll release a PS5 Pro this time. All these other things will give them a bump.

And Factions. That GaaS could be as important as Fornite for Epic.

It would be such a waste to release a pro console, considering so many games are still cross-gen. Dumping cross-gen would be a huge start. Let's see what these consoles can actually do.

Nah, I think it will be more similar to GT7 or MLB, or to other ND games. Depending on the size it could be even be a Lost Legacy-like title for TLOU, but seems it's going to be meatier than the previous ND games.

I think that if there's some Sony GaaS with CoD/Fortnite-like equivalent for Sony (but not a copy, it would be their own stuff), it could be the new IPs coming from Bungie (they are working on more than one new IPs), Deviation, Haven or Firewalk. Not all of them, but I bet that at least one of these games is going to be a big hit beyond the current 20M+ selling top (non-GaaS) Sony blockbuster. Maybe not in sales, but in revenue.

Hardware
- DualSense Edge
- PSVR2
- PS5 Slim?

Is it possible or even a good idea to also have a PS5 Pro later in 2023? I just can't see it happening, maybe 2024 makes much more sense.

I am interested in how it will look honestly. I wonder if it will be like expansion bay type deal of sliding in the unit (like HDD bay of PS2) or entirely detached, stand-alone USB connection (hopefully w/o additional power brick) like old HD-DVD drive accessory for 360.

If they are keeping the current design language - how will it look... and if they are going to reduce the size of the whole thing etc.
My biggest complaint of my launch unit is how big this thing is, and how it sits so unstable horizontally.
(Thankfully, I don't have to look at it when I'm not playing - I just shut the door - I open it up when I am playing for air flow)

Sorry, but you're not considering the real life supply, distribution and marketing implications of implementing this strategy cold at the beginning of a new gen. It would've been a PR nightmare. At least now the market has gotten used to the idea of a digital console so that helps to ease their transition into the new revision next year. And with scalpers losing interest in the PS5 (coupled with the massive amount of stock coming next year), they won't be a factor for the new model either.
We are simply over thinking this shit. Just pure speculation at this point. On both sides of the argument.

I like the idea of a Playstation with the optional cd drive I can buy separately if I wanted.

Your right. Consumer choices really is so 1995. In 2022, corporations own your asses and you will like it. They will convince you the old way is old fashioned while taking away choices from you. What's wrong with keeping the option there? Why the fuck would anyone want them to take away disc drives and physical media altogether?

Wow that's a cynical view. You spend money to get access to things. You just dislike the idea that you can't own it forever. That's fine, I could care less. I haven't used a disk in forever and won't be any time going forward.
I'm not taking it away, in fact they are still offering you the option. How on the earth is giving you an external drive taking away something? You still have choices.

In all seriousness, it sounds like the plan for Sony is now:

2020 - PS5 and PS5 DE
2023 - PS5 Slim, with optional optical drive. Original PS5 and PS5 phased out.
20?? - PS6, no optical drive, but supports the above as an optional extra.

So we get a slimmer PS5 and a drive to add on. Seems like literally what customers were asking for. I imagine this is going to sell better than any price reduction.

… https://www.semianalysis.com/p/tsmcs-3nm-conundrum-does-it-even this is why. Semiconductors scaling is slowing down to a crawl , a larger jump in performance is needed to deliver a visible jump in games (especially Pro consoles where devs will mostly try to brute force their way out of problems), and getting performance improvements is harder and more expensive.

I say, save money for XSX2 and PS6 R&D (entering a recession maybe work on retention packages for your staff too instead of spending lots of money on an expensive Pro variant few people will actually buy) and ship slim consoles that are easier to manufacture if you have extra to spend (you need to drive a bit more volume to make it worthwhile to devs to migrate more and more games away from the cross gen pit).

I don't understand how they didn't think of this right from the beginning. They could have avoided 2 separate SKU, 2 separate assembly lines, molds, licenses, patents. djeez.
Because of market protecc forces that try to position their product With things like wow it looks like a vagina or a router... They needed to establish their presence. Now they could even sell dung balls with a silk ribbon people would buy it no matter what.

Because then people who don't need the disc drive would have to pay $100 more? I get from Sony's perspective yeah it would be great to make everyone pay $500, but this lets each person decide.
I would assume the point would be to drop the $500 SKU.

It's smart. If the goal is to transition people toward digital, making the digital-only version the universal entry point serves that goal better. People won't be as afraid to buy the digital version because they know they can always upgrade later, but fewer probably will.

Plus it saves the problem of trying to gauge the exact demand for each SKU.
