Sony Wants To Grow PlayStation By Making Xbox Smaller, Phil Spencer Says

You can clearly tell who the PS fanboys are in this thread. At least I’ll get to play Starfield on my Xbox when it releases. Pc players will enjoy it too. PS losses out, now you know that’s how it feels. I’m sick of all the fucking exclusivity deals Sony has with multi platform content in multi-platform games. Fuck off Sony PS. They can’t even keep a good IP going like Gravity Rush and kill the servers, fuck Sony PlayStation.
And you can clearly tell who is the resentful, frustrated Xbox fanboy. 😆

Lmao, such a dumb take. How do we know how it feels all of the sudden when Microsoft has been blocking PS games for over a decade now?

You are correct! Both companies have done it. In fact, Microsoft acquiring studios is just a bigger, more expensive version of what Sony does because they can afford to. So it's baffling that they are making as much of a fuss that they are.

That said, Microsoft attempted to purchase a 3rd party deal with Tomb Raider, and the whole of the gaming community went thermonuclear!
Is what it is, I suppose.
Correction: both companies get timed-exclusive deals. Only MS buys multiplatform publishers and makes their games exclusive, hence the issues.

Here you go. You can start here.

Let me know if there are any words you don't understand. Always happy to help the mentally challenged.
Dude Microsoft has never said Starfield and Redfall wouldn't be exclusives. Nothing on Neogaf proves they did and the EU commission did not them ask them to.
But what is really dishonest is pretending not to see the 10 year agreements that MS has doled out. It's one thing to say I don't trust your word, but I don't trust your signature is a different deal, especially if Nintendo does and Valve says verbal is enough. The FTC is acting like they're on Sony's payroll and that's actually harmful to consumer confidence. We need to know the government acts on behalf of consumers, not for ideological crusades or personal ambitions.

I have all the consoles, I dislike Sony’s system more though. If you need proof, you can see my post in the gaming setup thread.

I fucking hate Sony’s console the most, I mean it’s kinda archaic with how save transfers work and you can’t play backwards comparability with PS2 and PS3 games, they killed Gravity Rush’s 2 server so you can’t even unlock content in single player. I don’t like Sony PS. I disliked their console for their un-ergonomic controller since the PS2 and PS3 days as they gave me hand cramps, and had to resort to using third party controller adapters to play their first party games.

Phil is getting nervous because if this acquisition fails, he is on the chopping block.

M&A is always difficult but you generally want to get a promotion within Microsoft rather than being ousted.

In his mind he probably thought he would get promoted and maybe Kotick would take over as head of microsoft gaming.

He'll have nothing to show for Microsoft in 3-4 year period, maybe even 5... What was their last hit game? When the supply chain crisis is over, he's going to be in a lot of trouble. He's bet big on GamePass and Cloud Gaming, but neither are ready yet. His internal studios can't cut it and even the PC sales for Bethesda aren't enough to repair the revenue drain spent buying them. Remember 7.5 billion to buy Bethesda...
It would be for the best if Phil gets the chop. The guy can’t deliver games with 20+ studios ffs. It’s time for him to go.

I don't think you understand what anti-trust regulators actually do.
Get that box of crayons please, I think that's exactly what you should be playing with right now with those simplistic views.

the more you know
I know precisely what trust regulators do. If we're being honest in this conversation, such a huge acquisition should be looked at closely. I have no quarrels there. But let's face it, this entire ABK deal is becoming a farce on massive proportions. These guys have no real basis to even attempt to block this deal. Their arguments hold no water to the point that the FTC is using hypothetical or even "misrepresented facts" to even have an argument.

That's something regulators aren't supposed to do: protect the dominant market leader from competition. It doesn't matter if Xbox needs ABK or not (mileage may vary depending on your opinion of it) What matters is that Activision is selling, Microsoft is seeking to buy. Scrutinize the deal! I totally get it. But don't lean heavy on hypotheticals and false accusations to make an argument in hopes of blocking a deal that harms no one other player on this game BUT Sony. That's simply not their job.

Because they can afford to. They are a multi trillion dollar company for crying out loud. And they have a game streaming service that depends on constant game content for subscribers and to keep their subscription service thriving. Of course their going to go heavy! Wouldn't you if you could afford it? We all know Sony would if they could.

Ask yourself a question though, is this deal being looked at solely because the regulators are concerned by the deal, or that Sony have been against it and are complaining, very different distinctions I feel.

Since the FTC also investigated the MUCH smaller Bungie acquisition by Sony, I think it's fair to say it's because the regulators are concerned by the deal.

All Microsoft have done is started to flex their financial muscles, it was never a case of if they would do this, more a case of when. But still not sure what some are suggesting on here, as Sony has been doing similar things ( admittedly on a smaller scale) for generations now, they have obviously done this over a longer period but still....... Are we honestly suggesting Microsoft are allowed to compete, but only by spending the same amounts as Sony and on their terms, makes no sense whatsoever, then try to pass it off as anti consumer and bad for the overall industry, when in effect it's only themselves as a company they are actually worried about.

A couple of things need to be included here:

First, Microsoft has been acquiring studios for decades, same as Sony.

Second, Sony's acquisitions (with Bungie being the exception) have been after working closely with studios before "naturally" bringing them under their umbrella. Microsoft hasn't been working closely with Activision/Blizzard and Zenimax in the same way that, as an example, Sony was working with Insomniac before their acquisition. That's the issue here. Sony's acquisitions seem like very particular selections after time closely spent to ensure that there is a good fit/match between Sony and the studio in question. Microsoft, on the other hand, is just grabbing studios that are available and then, in many cases, hanging them out to dry. (I'm still looking at you, 343i.)

The ONLY reason that Sony is more successful than Microsoft is because Sony is managing their existing studios better. Microsoft's IPs are not worse than Sony's. They just don't know how to manage their studios, nor do they have cohesion between their studios. Microsoft's entire modus operandi (MO) is to throw money at things to get better. But what they need is someone who can properly manage their portfolio, and throwing money at existing and new studios isn't going to fix that.

Lmao this thread HS me rolling, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a console war combat sortie so this give me nostalgia and a strangely warm feeling to see 30+ fan lads going for blood. Thank you all.

Anyone who is a real fan of gaming better hope Microsoft’s strategy of acquiring publishers and pushing subscriptions fails. Microsoft is a good, profitable company for its owners but that has always come at a cost to its userbase. This is true with Windows, Office, and pretty much everything else they’ve ever touched. Game Pass isn’t trying to compete, it’s trying to put MS in the same place they are in the computing space: a middleman that gets a cut of all the software (and a sub no less). They aren’t interested in hardware, and it’s clear because they’ve offered Game Pass to be on other platforms. They are licking their chops at simply the thought about not needing to invest in hardware and just capturing the high margin income from digital distribution.

It’s ironic because that behavior will shrink the industry. Get everyone to sub to Game Pass, game sales fall dramatically across the board (who would pay $70, especially if it’s a day one on GO?) and devs realize they need to be on Game Pass if they want their games to be visible. Microsoft pays them for this up front and in return they are given power. Falling revenue from purchases and other platforms encourage less competition and scales well for Microsoft, leading toward industry contraction where an increasing percentage of revenue ends up in Microsoft’s pockets.

This is simply bad for the industry and blocking this acquisition is a good idea. If not Microsoft, Google and Amazon and Apple would be even worse. None of those companies understand gaming in the least. I dunno about you guys but I am not interested in the streaming wars happening with gaming, and with all of the services already it’s clear this is in the mindset of the industries biggest players.

What would be good for the industry, Microsoft and gamers as a whole, is for them to be competitive with Sony and Nintendo like they were during the 360 era. Aside from the hardware snafu, the software situation was never better for Microsoft. It’s funny how simple it is too: make excellent exclusive games in multiple genres, including a couple huge first party killer apps. Have a competitive advantage (XBL) that makes your platform better, rather than making others worse. Everything Microsoft has been doing since the XBone announcement disaster is anticompetitive when they should actually be doing what Phil keeps preaching: develop excellent games. I’d love to see Phil work at a company like Nintendo or Sony, not some tech conglomerate that just wants another revenue stream to pad margin.

God, when will you learn you’re not entitled to have games on GP?
And why can’t MS make good third party deals? Stop playing the entitled victim.
The diminishing returns of motivation to post here are really adding up lately. I have never minded reading different opinions. Its actually the main reason I've always posted here. Its a positive.

But here you're just not reading correctly anything I wrote, despite it being a very short and simple post with no large words. Youre repeating something you've already told me once that was wrong the first time. Youre being unnecessarily rude when I wasn't talking to you or anyone specifically or insulting anyone or even saying the two companies were doing different things. Its just flat out stupid. Literally depressing to read.

This is absolutely false. Microsoft hasn't been acquiring studios for decades. Up until 2018, they only had, I think 5? And they depended heavily on Forza, halo and gears. The reason they have had as many issues they've had is because they didn't have the talent or dev houses to truly compete with Sony, who had numerous studios and IPs over decades of dominating this industry. They didn't even have the backing of their own company.

And to say they can't manage studios is disingenuous! They've only started to acquire studios within the last couple of years. Then, the whole of the world faced an epidemic! Every and all industries were changed for the foreseeable future.

I'll agree that they need to start releasing games from all these studios in the VERY near future. But to state they don't know how to manage studios or that they've been acquiring studios for decades is equivalent to the FTC stating that Microsoft went back on their word to not make Bethesda games exclusive, when that's not what they said and have kept to what they actually stated in the initial contract. It just ain't true, chief!

Fair enough. They are entitled to buy multiplatform publishers and take their games off PlayStation (although it is weird and anti-game and industry-damaging, but whatever, that's subjective). But at the same time, aren't Sony and PS fans entitled to complain about it?

One company can do that bad thing; the other can't complain about it?

I remember when I was a kid and I played and I enjoyed SoulCalibur 2 on Gamecube, it was my first exposure to the SoulCalibur franchise and I loved it.
But then the evil people at Sony made SoulCalibur 3 exclusive to PlayStation and I lost my love for the franchise, I couldn't enjoy the franchise on the console I was on.
It wasn't until I got an Xbox 360 and SoulCalibur VI came out. I was delighted and really enjoyed Soul Calibur IV and V, hell Star Wars characters were in there too! I also went on to enjoy Street Fighter IV, I never played the previous games before.
Then the evil people at Sony made Street Fighter V a Playstation exclusive and I couldn't continue with the franchise anymore.

So yeah I have disturbing and ill moments growing up with PS for them to take shit away from me.
So Sony can go fuck off.

Microsoft factually has been acquiring studios for decades. It is just that a lot of them closed. Lionhead and Ensemble come immediately to mind. Then there was Bungie which was eventually spun off. Others include Aces Game Studios, Press Play, FASA, Digital Anvil and Bigpark. This was all years ago.

If you have a decent PC, there's no reason to own an Xbox over a Playstation. Playstation has big high quality exclusives, and Xbox doesn't, and it's been that way for a very long time now.

Not really when those same fans were styling and profiling when jimbo went on his money hat world tour. Doing the dance of joy saying you go Jimbo add more value to my playstation. It's hypocritical to say well Sony can take away major studio games with glee but every major studio game better be on my Playstation day and date. It's been a near decade since playstation lost a major studio game so i understand some might find it shocking it can happen to them also.

Sony and Microsoft are essentially doing the same thing. Sony is just leaning heavily on piece meal deals (because that's all they can really afford) and Microsoft has the financial backing to buy the restaurant. And frankly, they haven't taken current games or broken any 3rd party deals Sony has made in the past away at all. What they've stated is that new IP will be exclusive on a case by case basis. That makes sense to me as there are no large communities attached to new IPs. And, Microsoft is now up to compete with Sony head on! The only difference here is that Microsoft is NOW flexing the financial muscle they've always had. The fabled war chest is real and wide open.

The true issue in all this is Sony is up against a huge tech company worth trillions of dollars, and they can't compete against a exceedingly rich and resourceful company like Microsoft. Detach any loyalty or personal feelings from these facts, and it was inevitable that Sony was going to have a very difficult time competing with that. Regardless if that's just in the last couple of years, or 2030.

It's not "bad". It's only bad as it will force Sony to finally think outside the box and level the playing field. There's nothing inherently wrong there. It's competition. What the naysayers are upset about is the status quo being changed. Being challenged. Change is hard. I get it. But it happens all the same. Sony is not immune to this.
