God of War Ragnarök G|OT|Y

Need to get back into it this weekend, but not gonna lie....im still right at the end of the ironwood section...it was that bad it put me off playing it for a couple of days.
It didn't put me off, but was very close myself. There are similar sections later on, but they have the proper lenght and are actually interesting. And after those the game just says fuck it and skyrocket into space.

Been a while since I played GoW2018, but for as much trash as people talk about Ironwood section I found it to be better than the terrible Helheim level in 2018

Every realm in Ragnarok is so much better then what’s on offer in 2018
Eh.. I'd personally take 2018 Helheim over Iron Wood.

That section is literally 1/32nd or less of the overall game and its content.
True. But you'll never know until much later.

I can solve then however the entire emphasis is on puzzle.

The design is very boring.

Walk - puzzle - puzzle - combat - walk - puzzle - puzzle -combat.

The old games certainly did not have this many puzzles. It explains why the reviewers said this is a 40 hour game. It plays more like Darksiders than the GOW 2018.

I enjoyed Alfheim much more because i didn't feel like I was stuck in one area for hours.

I'm hoping the game picks up from there.

8 hours in the original GOW and there was much more variety in locations and story progression.

I do however like there are lots of unique mini bosses in this game so that's fun.
Couldn't be more wrong

Puzzles in the environment is what makes them interesting and makes the level design so compelling

One weird thing I experienced during the my fight with Svipdagr maybe because my armour might have weird ability I didn't notice but my bare fist was doing more damage than my weapons against them for some reason.

Finally platinum the game at 53 hours.
I don't hate those 'squeeze through' thing until i try to 100% the game.

That fucking mine in dwarf realm is the worst. And it's a fucking maze meaning it's easy to get lost and have to do those shitty squeeze through over and over again.

It's weird Gna suppose to be hardest boss but i beat her after a few try.

But have some difficult at Berserker king. Don't remember how many time i have to fight him. Maybe because he's really tanky.

Try to platinum it make me love the Crater area more. Wish the rest of the game designed like that area.

Hope they will release the new game plus and photo mode soon : D

Watching credits. The ending was very powerful. I had some gripes with the game, didn't find it as enjoyable as the first but it's still a very good game regardless.

Now, onto mopping up the side stuff.

Let's find that new valkyrie queen bitch.

I don't mind puzzles - as in the previous games - however there are far too many IMO. It just immensely slows down the game. I'd rather primarily kill enemies (with a few puzzles thrown in here and there to introduce variety).

Every single level (and side missions that I have played) have multiple segments which stop your progression due to a puzzle.

By the way, how much further left in the game?
I've finished Vanaheim. Now headed back to Brok's and Sindri's house with Freya for the first time

And that's why I enjoy the new GOW games much more than the Old ones. It's literally more of a 3D Metroidvania type action adventure game akin to Soul Reaver, older Zelda Games etc. I loved the old games, but they were far outclassed by the Devil May Cry games on ps2. Not to mention they actually fixed the enemy hitbox this time with the new Combat system 👍

It's a level plucked out of an Uncharted game. It was hilarious tbh. ND has clearly inspired Sony devs far more than people give them credit for.

I remember the village level in Uncharted 2 that was so well received in 2009. I loved it. A level where you do nothing other than walk for 5 minutes, pet a cow and kick a soccer ball to a kid. It was revolutionary at the time and a great way to calm things down after an epic 2 hour chase scene that included two long train levels. Now those 5 minute breather levels are literally an hour long and completely destroy the pacing they are meant to help preserve. Uncharted 4's chapter 16 is one of the worst offenders. A 45 minute mansion level with ZERO gameplay that completely kills the pacing of a game finally ramping up after a slow opening. The fact that it had TWO more levels like that is simply inexcusable. At least GOW sprinkles in some combat encounters and an awesome couple of boss fights in there. I would say its way better than Uncharted. It just goes on for way too long. 30 minutes shouldve been perfect.

Later Atries levels are fucking awesome so thankfully its mostly just this one level. I would love to see who designed this level because its probably an ex-ND dev.
I can only co-sign. Seriously they did a great job with the Marketing, I never expected the game to have such vast scale its almost overwhelming. When you think that's it they surprise you with how big the level/realm is

Just beat the post-game super boss. Felt easier than the comparative fight in GoW 2018. The double tap shield skills and disrupting attacks made it much easier to get a lot of attacks in.

getting used to the combat now and I love it. What % more or less am I through the main plot?

Ive been trying to do all the side stuff but the most I've got so far is 43% according to the game in one of the realms.

Orange Beserker in Alfheim defeated. I came so close so many times but choked like 5 times before I finally got him. The Chest armor that converts rage into revives came in very handy, but man, these one shot kills are getting too old. Im just going to skip these orange bar Beserkers from now on and do the side quests.

Tried some Musphelheim. Way harder than the original.

Thats literally the formula of GOW 2018. It's just a lot bigger now. If you are tired of puzzles and exploration then just go do story missions back to back.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
The long time VA for kratos was replaced for gow2018 with this guy in the video and I have to say he does a great job. He also does the mocap for kratos.
star trek GIF

Funny thing is he has always kind of reminded me of Kratos when he played Teal'c in Stargate SG-1.
He was a fantastic choice.

I beat the game earlier today at around 34 hours.

It’s a 9/10. My only major gripe is that I didn’t like the ending and where the plot went . So many opportunities for twists, turns, and creative hooks but in the end it was a very boring narrative.

The first 60-70% of the story was brilliant then it just shits the bed.

You are probably using lunda armour.

Btw, if little shit end up with angrboring instead of
thor's daughter
i'm gonna riot.

Thor and odin are the absolute highlights of this game character wise.

Honestly this is true, I had a LOT of flashbacks to the soul reaver series while playing this for some reason. It reminded me a bit of legacy of kain. Which is high praise

I want my GoW 2018 longer block window piece of armor (not sure which it was)... Maybe I have not found it yet.
In Ragnarok its an attachment for the shield called Rönd of Deflection. Im using it on my shield. It unlocks in the blacksmiths when advancing in the main story.

Musphelheim is hard as fuck this time around. It was challenging in the first game but now that the enemies are far more aggressive, its rough. The challenges themselves are far more annoying. I need some Embers to get the final level 9 upgrades for my weapons which are holding me back from hitting level 7.

once again, i have pretty much all my armor at level 9. all weapons and shields at level 8 but stuck at level 6 but the game doesnt drop any chaos and freeze flames. my weapons are stuck at level 5 which hold back my overall level making every boss fight way harder than it should be.

The latest open world area is easily the best in the game. It is not only the biggest but also the best designed. the world feels alive and your action make a real difference. I keep thinking it would just be a random island to explore but it keeps going and every little area has its own stories, mini bosses and puzzles. I am quite flabbergasted at how massive this completely optional area feels. There is no way people who finished the game in the first week even saw this level because there is at least 6 hours on content here.

I know i might have said this before but at the risk of coming across as a broken record, this is probably the best game ive played since RDR2 and GOW in 2018. Better the Sekiro, Death Stranding and TLOU2. It's sublime.

Dude I'm at Level 7 and half and I haven't done a single challenge in Musphelheim yet. Haven't finished the game either.

I think you just have to spend more time in the Crater, there's so many resources, accessories and whatnot there it's not even funny. I'm at 67 hours so I must have spent close to 15+ hours just there.

Using the Survival armor btw, I'll see if I can make a video for you.

This, that place is the best designed videogame area I can recall. It's a whole, contained masterpiece of his own.

Im exploring it now, and its mindblowing how an optional area that can be missed by ppl that only follow the main quest, is so good and has so much to do. To 90% of the publishers out there, this area would be locked behind a season pass or expansion pack. This game just keeps delivering the more you play it.

Don’t want to to encounter spoilers so just going to drop a couple of thoughts without digging through the thread:

1. The option to automatically vault over obstacles instead of needing to press O every time should have been on by default. I didn’t turn it all the way up (can perform additional movement actions automatically) but just being able to run over speed bumps feels way better than pressing O all the time while moving.

2. I think I’ve read that certain sections of the game are disliked, but I like those sections. They’ve made the game feel a lot less like an expansion for God of War (2018). If the franchise moves into other pantheons, I’d like to see more of this.
Playing as other gods is a great opportunity to experiment with new combat mechanics, but I’d still like to play as Kratos ~70% of the time. Being able to choose between a few different options for followers in the future might be really cool too.

3. The puzzles aren’t very good. They all amount to finding the shiny thing before your followers tell you where it is. More like an easter egg hunt than puzzles, and the eggs are either right out in the open (pointless) or hard to spot but not really challenging in any enjoyable kind of way.

4. The shop and equipment menus are bad. I don’t recall it being any better in 2018, but if anything it’s even worse now. Very unintuitive.

5. God of War (2018) and Ragnarok might be the only two linear/cinematic/storytelling “experience” video games that I enjoy. I prefer video games as an open sandbox, but God of War really nailed this type of game and Ragnarok definitely carries the torch. I’m invested in the story and characters, and the game just feels good to play.

It's actually very easy to forget to upgrade certain elements, due to how messy the menus are. I totally forgot I could upgrade Spartan's Rage. And I have to remind myself to upgrade my rune attacks.

Yeah, i did go from low 6s to high 6 thanks to that area. the crystal lake helped me hit level 9 on several of my gear, but the only ones that are ones that require smoldering ember. i am swimming in crystals, asgardian ignot and petrified bone but i need the embers for the final upgrades.

i will check out different gears and weapon handles to see if they can be maxed out like my other gear. Its possible anything to do with rage perks relies upon embers.

Whats mind blowing is how well its designed. It shouldve been the first open world area in the game, but i guess looking at the enemies they wanted it to be late game challenge with all your abilities unlocked. Just amazing level design that wouldve made a way better first impression than svartelheim which felt like midgard 2.0 or rather midgard 1.5.

Shame that lots of people are going to miss out on this level.

I platinumed the game at about 70hours. (maybe 10 hours less counting afk time)
Got all sidequests done though, just a few labours from
Ratatoskr
left.

Will probably add another 10 hours or more farming hacksilver and mats to upgrade all gear that I couldn't yet bring to max level and also exp to level up relics and runics.
I might also explore every area again, maybe I'll find some more endgame dialogue.
Can't wait for New Game+ though. Would definitely play it again.

Overall the game was great and I really hope they'll find good ways to expand this IP even further while at least maintaining this quality.

For me it was the opposit felt muspelheim was overall a lot easier now then in the prequel.

After dying 4 times against this boss, I drank a Git Gud elixir and became the Gof of Parry.

I've trained my parry skills while fighting the optional Berserker bosses, even though they had higher levels then me. These fights were nice.
Overall though I feel like no fight in GoW:R was as hard as Sigrun. (at least while playing the same difficulty as before)

I almost can't believe how stupid this story is. I started the game late because I had no time, but now that I am halfway into it, I am completely flabbergasted.

They are heavily influenced by Naughty Dog and have increased dialogue by 400%, and are trying to cram two games into one.

Kratos is neutered with a soft morality system and feels completely useless, and they are trying to tell personal stories from the perspective of gods who want to be friends and deal with trauma while they cry and hug while commentating on destiny and fate in something that comes off as a parody of a sitcom. They sit around the dinner table telling jokes.

Half of the dialogue is exposition about lore and history that is completely useless, centered around underdeveloped places and people that have no bearing on anything. They can't slam enough companions in your face that need to speak on everything in fine detail, from what direction you need to look to where you need to throw your axe.

Atreus barely got any working facial animations. Freya looks like a dead horse trying to speak.

The over-the-shoulder camera is pointless. In 2018, they told little stories with the cinematography, here, they barely use it for anything worthwhile, I guess it's because that was Barlog's baby, and he's not directing.

The game is still great because of the production values and combat, I would even score it well over 90. But WHAT A FUCK is going on here, I have the same feeling as when playing Mass Effect Andromeda. How did they do from God of War 2018 to this mess? these two games have almost nothing in common when it comes to how they tell their stories. This game is the very definition of bloated expensive popcorn entertainment with no substance.

I am terrified of the stupid shit I am bound to run into as the story continues. At least there are some cool bosses.
