I don't even have a VRR capable display :-(Before the summer. Though I wouldn't named it soon. Unbelievable it took so long.
Mine is strictly FreeSync.

Yep. Sony did a good job with the implementation on the A80J. I think it should work well on PS5. You guys are in for a treat! Can not wait! Just in time for me to start Elden ring ps5 version, obviously games like Ghostwire Tokyo are going to benefit from it. Super excited for peeps to get their hands on it and see how much of a game changer it is. I’m sure it will be live at a hardware level.
Actually FreeSync is AMD's name for what is really VRR so there may be a chance for support.I don't even have a VRR capable display :-(

Does PS5 support VRR?
PS5 hardware supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR.
I meant on the monitor side, if it has FreeSync and supports it through HDMI, PS5 can recognize HDMI VRR as present and use the monitor as VRR output. This tech is two pronged and needs two devices to work together. PS5 has the non proprietary name in their support for VRR, monitors/TVs have either proprietary name or the HDMI consortiums open source name->VRR announced on their products. Some FreeSync labeled monitors do support HDMI 2.1 VRR, so in that case PS5 will support it. Though it is not a guarantee as FreeSync had levels of implementation and mostly newer ones went with open source way.On PS5 ?
Probably not. No mention of Freesync in any PS5 stuff, the only thing they've mentioned is HDMI 2.1 VRR.

That is weird because a monitor with FreeSync can actually do VRR.I don't even have a VRR capable display :-(

I’m most surprised the monitor did not receive a firmware to allow VRR.While HDMI VRR and FreeSync via HDMI are identical from a technical point of view (HDMI VRR is based on AMDs HDMI via VRR approach), both are advertised differently in the EDID. The PS5 must therefore be able to do something with the FreeSync blocks in the EDID. Alternatively, it should be possible to modify the EDID using additional hardware (e.g. certain products from HDFury).

they are probably just covering their asses, as they did with BC. Back then, some people were very concerned it was going to be just a handful of compatible games, but it turned out that more than 90% were perfect."After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR."
UGH, so it does seem Sony is doing some weird game-by-game implementation of VRR as opposed to system-level like Xbox does. That means games would have to be individually patched to support VRR via an API? Makes no sense to me, why not make it system level like xbox? I don't get it.

Same reason it took them a year to get the ssd expansion working: They do not give a shit!I can't find any conceivable reason why PS5 didn't support VRR since launch other than Sony's hubris of not letting anyone use it unless they get it working on their own TV's first. It's an HDMI 2.1 supported standard, it should have come in day 1. It's not like they had to go out of their way to add Freesync support like Xbox had to before.
Weird if that's the case.
Sony did the basic stuff. MS went beyond and set the bar very high.BC was a nice surprise on the PS5. It ended up better than what I thought it would be. Sure it's not as elegant as Microsoft's BC but it's nice to be able to play some PS4 titles with better performance without an update (Sekiro comes to mind).
If it's system-level VRR on Xbox - how come it's disabled in Halo Infinite?"After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR."

And what would be the benefit for Sony not to do the same? 99% would opt-in.You probably can disable it at SDK level.
Others games or modes have it disabled.
It is probably a Opt-out option... so if you don't choose to be out you are in.

While I did not expect much more of the PS5 BC, I was hopeful that the SSD would improve loading times a little bit better than what we got. It didn't help that most of the games I played got no patch. I ended up using the USB HDD I had been using with the PS4 Pro for PS4 games until I upgraded the PS5 storage with an extra 2TB.
But why is it broken if it's at system level?it's broken, not disabled.
Do keep up and use that brainbowl of yours.Hundreds of games support VRR, even games that came out before VRR was even a thing. On the other side we have a literal handful of games that don't support it due to something being broken. And you guys really think it's not a system level setting?

Which is why Sony worded their announcement in such a way. It's not disabled. Something conflicting with how the games V-Sync works causes it to not work as expected.
DF covered this in multiple videos.

Cool, so devs can fuck it up.It's not disabled. Something conflicting with how the games V-Sync works causes it to not work as expected.

Maybe the wording used by Sony is to cover their ass.
Scroll up, concern was brought up. Just like the BC concern prior to launch with the very same wording. No one's arguing why Sony worded how they did in the blog lol, they can write anything they want on their blog.
It's PR speak.
Ding ding ding!Cool, so devs can fuck it up.

Can you link to such product if there needs arise after a FW update and no supportAlternatively, it should be possible to modify the EDID using additional hardware (e.g. certain products from HDFury).

Holy cow, I never saw this! That's bullcrap if true. I guess their APIs are super restrictive and will need developers to submit patches in order to get it to work."After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR."

Look at the way Sony did HDR for example on PS4 it was opt in by game developers and only became system level in PS5, could be the same with the PS5/PS6 for VRR/120hz.
Also worth noting the way the PS5 works it outputs 60hz and only 120Hz if a game supports it unlike PC/Xbox were 120Hz+ is always active.
At 60hz VRR range is 48-60Hz.
At 120hz VRR range is 48-120Hz
Below 48Hz a low frame rate compensation can be used which is a frame multiplier but this also requires 120hz output to work for the bandwidth needed, it will not work with 60hz output.
Not many 30fps PS5 games have such a mode, one example is the 40fps 120hz mode in Ratchet and Clank.
Cant wait for this! Let's go Sony. Gonna be amazing for games like returnal and gt7

I had to go back an entire page to unwrap this subtle subliminal message.listen to this poster…..i Can’t wait for the ps5 to get this feature
You PS5 only gamers still don't have VRR? Damn.
I've had my vrr tv for several weeks now and it's a huge game changer! Hopefully sony hurries the fuck up. It works well in my Sony tv so they should be able to implement it well in the PS5. Just hold on a bit longer guys! IT's worth the wait!

VRR works really well on the A80J. Sony finally figuring shit out! I have high hopes for it coming to PS5 now. You guys are going to love it, assuming you have a tv that has the ability!
Another subliminal message that was difficult to crack. 2 whole pages back. 5 days in real time.Xbox
Damn , you're really triggered by the fact that the PS5 still doesn't have VRR, huh? It's okay. You should eventually get it. I only just got a VRR tv so you're not that late to the party. Take a breath..

Now my question to you is do you actually have a VRR set? You should go and buy one, if you can afford it. I just dropped $3,000 on a tv. No big deal for me. And I have a console (XSX) that can support it. Feels good, man!
You'll get there though. Don't worry! I'm sure there are budget tvs you can buy that have VRR. It's all good!
It's okay pal. I doubt you even have VRR but you'll use it in your console wars in the DF threads. We all know that's going to happen. So predictable lol
