DF: Cyberpunk 2077 Next-Gen Patch: The Digital Foundry Verdict

Series S doesn't have a performance mode, I'm assuming you meant to say Series X.

These are DF's exact words:

Now of course it goes without saying you will only get this tangible benefit if you have a VRR display. But it's not like you get a 4K TV with every PS5 or Series X either. The Series consoles currently support VRR which lets them have advantages like this and in cases like Dying Light 2, literal doubling of frame rate over PS5.

What display a user has is an irrelevant argument here. The support for the feature is on a console hardware level.

It's a bit naive to outright dismiss the benefit VRR brings just because one of the next gen console brands still hasn't added support for it yet.

Nowhere am I dismissing it, I made that clear in my previous post. I'm questioning your paraphrasing where you call it a "non-issue" (which by the way is not what DF said). It can't be a "non-issue" when that experience won't be consistent for everyone.

Does VRR pretty much come as standard with new TV's these days?

No. And as of last year 4k adoption was still under 50% in the US. People playing on older kit likely won't care about any of this but they won't have any way around something like framerate drops.

You're really going to notice that extra 100p.

It would be nice if you read the article or watched the video ...

the game uses a big range of DRS and Series X generally runs at higher resolutions in both "best and worst cases". Not just the 100p ceiling.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I noticed how DF didn't have HDR turned on during the test. Does that mean with HDR on both systems can't run at 60fps in Performance Mode?
Nah the HDR mode is still fucked.
In fact a lot of stuff from the lastgen versions are still present.
I think CPR literally ported the last gen versions to the new consoles and added some stuff.
Hence why we got this upgrade now instead of later.

It seems VRR is a bit of a 'get out of jail card' for devs in terms of the Series consoles. I mean sure if you have a VRR TV its great.

I wonder if some devs feel they have to puch rez higher on XSX or they may get criticized of being PS5 biased, or not using XSX to its fullest etc.

Any new TV that supports the HDMI 2.1 spec has built in VRR. So, in most cases unless you're specifically looking for a cheaper TV like the TCL. It should.

Even TCL's will start adding HDMI 2.1 from what I recall reading last year.

But both I and DF clearly state that non issue point for VRR only. The labeling couldn't be any clearer.

It *is* a non issue for Series X owners with VRR displays. Whether HDMI 2.1 or Freesync.

I'm not really concerned with consistency in experiences here.

I saw similar drops in the nx gamer video but on the ps5.

Yeah, it's a very big and very busy open world game, drops back and forth like this should be expected.

Anyway, regardless of VRR or not. The improvement in the SX version between Patch 1.23 and 1.50 is worth the price of admission alone.

Just look at how wild the frame rate graph was in patch 1.23 vs now.

I gave up on playing it soon after launch and got a refund but have to admit it’s a great game now that it’s not broken on XSX. I didn’t get much further than the intro section so I have a ton of stuff to explore.

As someone without VRR TV or great eyes it’s frustrating. How about giving us a resolution toggle? Could’ve been 100% locked at 60fps, with higher settings, in 1080p.

Not true, either. It's getting messy with regards to HDMI 2.1:

So, what is one to do when shopping for a new monitor, television, or games console? Simply checking if the device has “HDMI 2.1” will not be enough to guarantee you any particular level of functionality. Instead, you’ll have to make yourself familiar with the specific features of the standard that are important to you, as well as the resolutions, frame rates, and color depths that you intend to run your hardware at. Then, you’ll have to hope that manufacturers and resellers actually publish detailed specifications so you can check you’re getting what you really want.

Generally speaking any 2022 mid/high end TV from a reputable brand will be fine as far as true HDMI 2.1 and VRR are concerned but its something that needs to be verified.

But both I and DF clearly state that non issue point for VRR only. The labeling couldn't be any clearer.

Not really, your statement reads like the fact that the console supports VRR makes it a non issue. It's only a non issue for those who are using a VRR display with the console, which isn't everyone.

My first run was on series x. So ps5 gets the corpo run. Such an improvement from ps4 bc. And the load times. Man before the lady could even say Kujira the game is done loading. Takes less than a minute switching between both this and horizon forbidden west through the quick app screen. Next gen is no joke.

My Sony X900H is still waiting for the legit release.

From my perspective, its either play on my PS5 on my TV, or use my 1440p monitor for VRR on the Series X. Probably going PS5.

Did Tom do the counts? The guy that said series s version of fifa was native 4k?

I'd wait for the retraction or confirmation from one of them that actually knows what they are doing.

NeonGhost

uses 'M$' - What year is it? Not 2002.
Looks like the best way to play on console is Series X with VRR easily, higher resolutions, totally smooth and faster loading.
typically yes and Sony can’t get VRR soon enough but the adaptive triggers are really good on this game that add some good immersion

Surprised to see PS5 winning overall although as always these are really small differences between two systems that have proven to yield pretty much identical results.

The question I had is why the 30fps mode looks so blurry compared to 60fps while it should be about extra fidelity.
Is there some bug? Has this been answered?

I agree, given his resume the figures are in dire need for confirmation. Besides, they don't align with NXgamer's findings.

Why the surprise? Is this related to PS5 running better in RT mode at same resolution especially, or the lower input latency?

Edit: Input lag is the same, my mistake, a misunderstanding.

Really thankful for the free VRR TV that comes with every Xbox Series console. Really makes a difference at times like this.

Or the free 4K TV that’s comes with the PS5??

Smh

The PS5 enjoys better framerate while running at a lower native resolution, but only at the most stressful snippets of the game, overall in performance mode they both run closer to 60fps, anyone with a half brain knows it’s a clear win for both, but those with a VRR display, the better choice is the Series X version with its higher pixel count.

bloody hell, VRR is a god send. I've not really noticed any drops on xbox. Saying that, with patch 1.5 I say the PS5 takes it as frame rate is the most important and it requires you having a VRR display to enjoy that benefit on xbox. if you had a VRR display and both consoles then the xbox is the no brainer for the higher resolution.

Yeah, no denying this. PS5 has seen a great jump in FPS with this patch. I hope they can continue working on the XBOX version to tighten it up. Saying that, I can't see the drops due to my TV lol!

VRR is effing amazing and this game has proven it even more to me. Im like 25 hours in and my experience is BUTTERRRRrrrrrrrr.
PS5 wins.

HDR is better on PS5 as well plus the DS controller.

hopefully we get a comparison that mentions the HDR difference.

What's the differences in HDR?
