I really like when i a game manage to diegetically insert real life music in its universe.
What game made you discover music you liked and listened to outside of it ?

It can be in the OST (like Tony Hawk Pro Skater) or cleverly introduced within the game (which i prefer and is what diegetically means...) like the two exemples below, which are two of the most recent in-game discoveries for me :

Devouring the Devoted by Ben Uhl in Control
You can listen to this cool indie tune through a radio you can turn on at the very beginning of the game. I love it, reminds me of Ty Segall

Echame la culpa by Dany Rojas, some dude, and a ghost whisperer
Now this gem is an exemple of a rare occurence, when the song in itself i find lame, but the way it's presented in game makes me love it. This can be due to the context, the fact they use a weird remix, or any reason which make you love the song more in the context of the game (in this case Dani's singing).

So friends,
Please tell me which song you discovered in which game, and your best diegetic experiences with music in games.

Edit : typos correction. PS : I swear i read the title four times so i don't fuck it up, should have read it five times i guess...

You already mentioned Tony Hawk, another obvious one is the radio stations in GTA. Vice City got 12 year old me into 80s music, San Andreas got 13 year old me into Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More and obviously a ton of hip-hop.

Shooting Star in Forza Horizon 4 by Anna Yvette. Her comment is pretty amazing and a testament to what a single game can do:

"I've honestly never received so much support and kind comments on a song of mine on youtube EVER! Thank you Forza Horizon 4 for using "Shooting Star" in your game for introducing me to such an incredible community!! I am so grateful for this opportunity, thank you SO much <3 "

EDIT:

Using this post for a cooler song, from SSX 3:

SSX 3 also introduced Yellowcard to my brother (not a gamer) he loves them to this day. Also Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 on gamecube... "the things we do to the people that we love--" "sacrifice, everything you know you love"

The band Royal Blood through the in-game radio station Horizon XS from Forza Horizon 2.
After their second album I even went to a concert of them.
Same can be said for Avenged Sevenfold, a few of their songs are in Call of Duty Zombies.

But, truth to be told, I discoverd Royal Blood first in the launch trailer for Enemy Front.

It's weird to think I discovered them in that, because I didn't like the game and didn't play it for long, so it's really not an import game to me, but APB Reloaded introduced me to Metric, with this song, and it's now my favorite band.

So, I'm thankful for this game for this reason alone :messenger_grinning_squinting:

GTA V - FlyLow FM introduced me to some music I'd never heard but the biggest one was Knower because that led me to Louis Cole's solo work.

This is on FlyLow, I liked it enough to look into them more (and this is certainly not their best song)

Which led me to Louis Cole's stuff which I absolutely love:

I mean on Spotify wrapped I am in the top .1% of Louis Cole listeners for 2021, lol.

Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding, awesome licensed soundtrack if you're into indie bands. Easily the best (realistic) snowboarding game ever made too, it's basically Skate. Amped 2 has more content but the easy mechanics and sheer playability make the first game my favorite.

Awesome Midwest Emo w/ 3 guitarists, lol.

Super chill beats, Amped had whole albums from certain artists on it.

Whippersnapper makes me think of what Blink 182 could have sounded like if they kept Scott on drums instead of Travis.

Street Sk8er in Middle School introduced my buddies and I to H2O

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Old weeb reply incoming:

Faye Wong thanks to Final Fantasy VIII

Went and listened to her entire catalog, a lot of really great music that's extremely important to me even 25 years later. This was one of only a few of her English songs, and honestly it's probably one of her worst tracks.

- Health via Max Payne 3 (I vaguely knew about them then, but never really gave them a chance, fell in love)

- Low Roar via Death Stranding (while I love the material from around this era more so than their later stuff, it was still cool to come across them. Even got to catch them live!)

Probably the scored early Need for Speed games up to Porsche Unleashed - Hot Pursuit 2's music isn't really for me - formed my liking of certain genres going forward, Burnout and also GTA from 2 onwards too. NFS Underground is one of the earliest games I remember liking particular tracks from.

I was 11/12 when I played GTA 1 so wasn't really into music in that way yet.

Basically everyone in Vrock in Gta San Andreas (except maybe Iron Maiden which I already knew)

From the game "Control"

For me it was with Alan Wake:

Weirdly though I like their songs for Remedy (as Old Gods of Asgard) more than their actual albums (as Poets of the Fall)

Recently, a band that was created just for the new Guardians of the Galaxy game. A few highlights:

It's way better than it has any right to be, and actually got me to purchase the game after a listen to the full OST.

Low Roar from Death Stranding:

22:22:22 22:22:22 he's a hidden gem, most of Kojima's picks from Low Roar are wonderful and when they kick in during gameplay it's simply glorious!

Great picks! And yes, they're well implemented indeed, after hearing a couple songs I looked him up on spotify and listened to his stuff for a couple months nonstop. His/their music really resonates well with me! I noticed there are some new songs so I'll have to give it a listen surely =)

Any of them have LDAC? Because Sony released a new 10.1" screen with LDAC for cars that's at $1200, and if I won't listen to LDAC-quality music here and there I won't bother with such pricetag and buy the lesser models. Actually I don't know where you can find LDAC-supported music as I simply use peasant-level music, youtube.:messenger_grinning_sweat:

I discovered The Chain Gang of 1974, while playing FIFA 12. Specifically, this song. Even now it reminds me of FIFA 12 transfer windows.

Not gonna say I became a big fan of the band (even though they have a few great songs), but I really liked "Take it All" from Trust Company that was featured in Breakdown.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA

Smite. Was awesome when you killed someone or ported back to base.

But it's so fucking dark when you actually watch the muaic video and hears the full song.

Is it cheating to say GTA? 3/VC/SA influenced a big chunk of my music taste.

GTA3
The main one is Royce Da 5'9. Didn't know who he worked with or anything like that, I just knew that he was good. Bought an album I listen to off the back of Game Radio.
MSX FM was a partial one because I already liked Drum n Bass, but it got me onto the Moving Shadow label and Omni Trio.

Vice City
The '80s. The whole decade, and of course the older tracks thrown in like And The Beat Goes On from '79, which is an all time classic. Every station got a listen.

San Andreas
I didn't appreciate it as much as the others at first, but when you catch me singing A Horse With No Name it's because of the more subtle influence of SA.

Cage the Elephant if I remember well in Borderlands. (the final song theme)
A mess of international artists I have tracked down through all the soundtracks of the various GTAs over the years.
Recently Lil Nas X on Forza Horizon 5... I didn't think I could honestly like it .. :pie_roffles:
