Wow, Metroid Dread really is the Soulsborne of Metroid (no spoilers thread)

I'm just going to leave you with a couple tidbits. This game is hard af, it punishes you like a Souls game, it has the best controls of any 2D game I've ever played, and it's probably the best game on Switch.

I don't expect it to get BOTW scores only because reviewers are too soft for this level of gaming, and there is a lot of angst directed towards this game for some reason, but it's an absolute masterpiece and will one day be remembered as one of the best games ever.

Samus Returns is dogmeat in comparison.

Sounds like hyperbole but holy shit, HOLY SHIT.

Sounds intriguing... I didn't expect the game to be THAT hard but Metroid games aren't known to be easy either. Anyways if its fair challenge reviewers shouldn't have any problem with it they all love FROM and other hard games.

But is there a difficulty option?

I don't want to give anything away but there are things you can unlock and holy mother of god.

Super Metroid is my only experience of Mrs Aran and I found it a piece of piss. Is this one much harder?

I don't like frustrating games. Especially with a very throwable €300 Switch in my hands :messenger_hushed:
Hard but fair ;)
Never died because of pissy controls only because i was lacking skills 😂

Can we PLEASE stop labelling everything with a bit of difficulty as soulsborne?

Games were hard before Demon's Souls, ok? They've been around since the dawn of video games. When I grew up you beat the game by dying, retrying, rince repeat. Games were hard. It's got fuck all to do with demon's souls or anything From ever did.

It’s based on evading and countering a lot more then older games.

Souls gameplay is all based around countering dodging etc mechanics.. in this instance comparing it with souls games is not silly.. ever played blasphemous?

Super Metroid is frustrating at times due to the high level of difficulty but it’s also one of the greatest games ever made. Recently finished it and the level design is masterful. After playing and beating Super Metroid I feel like every Metroid game from here on out is probably going to be a must play

If you think about it, games stopped being hard once save game stepped in, since then it's all just repeat until you proceed.

"Piece of piss" = easy

That's what I was getting at. Super Metroid was a doddle for me, but I loved it. Just wondering how this compared in terms of difficulty. I always play undocked and the small Switch screen can sometimes make a challenging game unforgiving.

The gameplay is a lot tighter than Souls. I was complimenting Souls with this one, but the difficulty is there. Both games have their strengths.

Are you suggesting these things weren't staples before souls?

You're not wrong. I've been replaying some older SNES games lately, and man, it was a different time. Entire games with no save options, so all you could do was play through it all without turning off. Several games even send you back to zero if you died.

How is this like a Souls game again? Because you're finding it hard?
I'm a massive Metroid fan, and can't wait for this, but come on...because it's hard doesn't mean it's like Souls.
As stated the evading and countering feels soulsish on top of difficulty, also want to point out that Souls has been compared to Metroidvania's for years with its level structure.

You must be a monster. I died so many times playing that game. It was tricky to learn many of the mechanics too. 10/10 game

play federation force and other M

tbh other m isn’t too bad apart from the baby baby baby and samus being a confused weak lady in love with her commander and not the bad ass stoic ripley she normally is.

I'm gonna try the game when it's gonna be like 5-10 euros in europe.

There is nothing in the trailers that excite me except the fact that it is a metroidvania.

Hopefully the hard part is gonna be the combat and not the platforming since i suck at that.

Can we stop for a moment to have a discussion of nomenclature? It's not a metroidvania. It's a metroid. Action-adventure with a focus on exploration and character progression focused on traversal and survival. "-Vania" is where the focus is split towards combat, in both overall design and character progression.

There are hardly any progression elements (i.e. upgrades) in Metroid, that are solely for the purpose of combat. Everything adds to traversal or survival, letting you get into weird locations, overcome new kinds of barriers, and avoid damage from specific threats. The combat applications are secondary. It's the 'Castlevania' games where the exploration is directly mixed with combat, and progression, where it exists, acts to improve your fighting ability more often than it does to help you traverse the map.

From what we've seen of Dread, there's maybe one upgrade that is combat-only, and even that technically lets you overcome an area threat to make it safer to traverse. Everything else, bombs, ice beams, boosted full-body-tackle charges, multi-missiles, is used to solve puzzles and traverse the map, rather than just to fight things.

This guy has been a huge stan(obsessive fan) of this game way before now, it's almost like he's trying to convince himself that the game is good.

Hollow Knight is a "hard" metroidvania that's fun and fair, if anything is the "souls" of a 'Vania game then it's Hollow Knight. Is the difficulty like that or something else? If the Emmi parts are "hard" then that's just shitty padding, not difficulty, don't get it confused. Like all the chase sequences in the first ORI game aren't hard they're frustrating padding trash.

Or he could just be enjoying it after being excited for it for so long?

And Hollow Knight is anything but fair. It a beautiful game with good art design, atmosphere and lore, excellent controls and power-up system but the level design is truly god-awful and the save-points set up in such a way as to artificially pad the length of the game, plus many of the bosses riddled with RNG bullshit.

Not sure that I will even remove the blister from the game after some things I have read here.

Game was only 10 bucks when pre-ordered with the Switch OLED. I might end up selling it new to make some money back.

Amen. How about we start saying TMNT hard or Gaires hard or even just plain old hard. A lot of us don’t find Soulsborne games hard.

I thought Samus Returns was pretty difficult for a Metroid game. Glad to hear this is also tough, but some of the bosses did feel like missile sponges and you were just waiting for the parry moment.

I think it's cause there was a dip for a while where games got a bit too easy, and then demon's souls came as a reaction to that. To me Demon's souls was old school, it was almost retro in it's sensibilities. And now it's popular again cause people realize that it's awesome to conquer something that initially might have kicked your ass.
