I too was suprised to see the price of the controllers. My sons left stick stopped registering to the left. Of course they only sell in pairs. There were some 3rd party controllers I could try but I did not know if they would fit his case so I just bit the bullet. Look forward to the day he just wants to play PlayStation with me.

No they don't you can buy either the left or right joycon separate, not all colours are available to buy individually but you can buy the red & blue neon ones individual.

Not everywhere. In Australia they used to sell them separately but they stopped a while ago.

Casuals don't care.
Fanboys probably think it's somehow good because Nintendo can do no wrong.
The core gaming audience just puts up with it because they still want to play the next Zelda, Mario, Fire Emblem, SMTV, etc.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Ngl, joy con is a piece of overpriced crap tbh, compared to dual sense, i have no idea why joy con is so expensive, it feels cheap.

Just spend a fiver for a set and 20 minutes to replace the sticks. Bada boom bada bing. Cheap & cheerful fix without the need to buy whole new joycons 🤷‍♂️ Not a permanent fix no, but worth losing out on a couple of cups of coffee a year instead.

I see them individually at Walmart, I only looked on Amazon. Sheesh, my fault then. Again, I am my own worst enemy. In fact, I just ordered the wrong refrigerator on the internet. Got it installed and put groceries in it before I noticed it had no dispenser on the door like my wife wanted. I thought, those idiots sent me the wrong refrigerator. I double checked and no, I ordered the wrong one. My wife has not been too harsh on me. Over the years she’s got used to my “funny quirks”.

ive actively avoided buying replacement joycons because of this.

used to be 100% handheld switch user, then my joycons got a little wonky, so I switched to only gaming on the tv with a pro controller. needless to say my active switch play time and game buying has significantly reduced due to constrained tv time.

P.S. For what it's worth, I agree, just trying to add a bit of levity. I love the games that Nintendo put out, but when they're making lots of money they're a godawful penny pinching company.

Price is where supply meets demand. People buy them for that price, therefore they are not cheaper.

All controllers are too expensive today... our second PS5 controller cost us the same as a pair of Joycons. And I don't have a problem with their overall design--which is solid, and works great for splitting in half for special uses (motion, labo, etc) or for 2-players on the go. The only problem I have is with their failure rate, which is indeed horrible. Ours have died due to busted shoulder buttons, and I took it apart to find that the fragile shoulder button connection can snap right off the board, nearly impossible to fix.

We still have our original (heavily abused by my son in his toddler days) Wii U gamepad working flawlessly, and a ton of WIimotes, which have never broken. I don't get what happened with quality control on the Joycons.

I'm a big Nintendo fan and have been all my life, but I agree that the Joy-Cons are their most poorly-designed controllers. Not from a functionality / gameplay standpoint (although some do have an issue with that too), but with the durability of the joysticks. I taught myself (thanks Youtube!) how to replace the sticks and shells so it's not a big deal to fix drift but for most people it's a huge headache.

Even worse, my Pro Controller joystick started drifting TWICE. I fixed it by replacing an internal part, it happened again, I fixed it again.

Yeah, this generation of controllers is way subpar by Nintendo's normal standards. Heck, my launch GameCube controller is still in active use with zero issues. I miss the old days.

I was able to buy single replacements for each it wasn’t so easy to find, protip though you will end up replacing both anyway so you might as well buy the pair because I had to and they are both gonna drift baby drift. Nintendo will replace them also if you call but in the US of A. The Fortnite color ones look sweet, I want a blue/ blue but with a d-pad. All these 3rd party joycons have at least one issue I didn’t like, no rumble, no gyro, only in docked mode, didn’t charge on Switch etc. Joycons own all of us until the Switch dies may the joy con be with u. Does ifixit sell a joycon fix kit yet that would seem like best option after you buy 4. That cardboard fix seems temp.

Man, I have never experienced this and I still have a launch day console. Maybe I just don't play it enough? I also use the pro controller when docked.
I should probably buy a pro controller just to put less strain on my joy cons, I have been eyeing some 8bitdo controllers though so I can use it also with PC and my classic system. I always liked playing split joycons even docked something freeing about it.

Well yeah of course, it allows one to sit there and put zero effort into even holding oneself in a vertical position on the couch and still play any game you want! 😛

Switch users are retarded
Well, that’s certainly one perspective.

Why should Nintnedo care, Switch still sells
I sometimes chuckle when I see tons of statements like this and yet in general an attitude that government should not step in ever and laws should not restrict corporations in any way if possible. Not saying you are stating that in particular, not singling you out.

Had they been a bit cheaper I’d have just got new ones when I got drift, but I felt too ripped off.

Repaired them with new sticks and so far so good, but recently I started to have this other issue of them popping off the console when playing portable, without me pressing the back button. Gonna have to 3D print the new parts and eventually will be fine, but Joycon’s quality really does leave a lot to be desired.

The public know about this issue and still buy in droves. Nintendo probably think nobody cares, so no reason for them to drop the price.

I don't think the public necessarily knows. I think Nintendo owners are probably some of the most obvious console owners, due to how many people buy this for their kid, forget about, their kid "breaks" the controller (or so the parent thinks), then they go buy a new controller.

I also think it's outside the skillet of most people, or out of laziness, so again people will just buy another.

Thankfully I have had no drift on any of my joy cons, but the sync dropout is fucking annoying.

Yes and after a while of that, even if in times it doesn't happen a lot, it plants a seed of unreliability in your subconscious that in my case gives it an association with a Chinese knockoff product henceforth driving me away of seeing it as a first choice of use.
