Mario Odyssey is elegant

It blows my mind how good Nintendo is at movement, just running normally is somewhat entertaining with Mario's fast frantic movement and fast legs, but with the long jump you get completely addicted to jump-moving around. The duck and roll is so cool, and the wall jump is one of the greatest moves of any videogame character ever. And the way you can use all the moves in all the levels to great effect, it's just impeccable 3D platforming design, it's all just too damn elegant and slick.

The whole game is only 5.7GB, and loads very fast and runs at 60fps, and it's so impressive how the game changes it's nature, from giving you tons of moons to progress fast early on, to keep feeding you with impulses, to becoming a collect-a-thon of sorts and in turn a puzzle-seek game when you try to find all the moons. It's absolutely brilliant.

It's not quite Mario 64 but it's better than that Galaxy trash with super tiny spheres that felt neither in space nor really fun.

The "harder" parts play like shit on those awful joy cons.

It's ok, but the large number of moons cheapens getting moons, it was definately made with generation ADHD in mind, where you recieved a moon sometimes for just standing around.

The game is so overated and 800+ moons to collect is the lamest shit I have seen in a Mario game. Why can't Nin make a worthy Mario 64 sequel ?
Hub world , nice large levels to explore and 100 -200 stars or moons to collect, and maybe some Yoshi coins to unlock late game content like star road. That's all I ask.

Mario Galaxies were solid but I did not enjoy the tiny ass planets and constantly blasting from tiny planet to tiny planet.

I really really really really like Super Mario: Odyssey, but this jump is where I started feeling I lost my dexterity and I cannot seem to slow myself to move past this without completing it successfully (I get so so close, touch the border and fall lol):

Wow justding from the comments alot of people didn't like this one. I personally thought it was great, maybe not as good as Galaxy 2 but still a great game. In fact the controls are probably the best in the series as well as the powerups.

NeoGaf is just one place among many on the internet.
Plenty people love this game, but not everyone has the need to tell people on the internet about it. Thats just the way it is. We often assume that the bubbles we live in is the entire world.

LOL without fail any thread even remotely praising anything nintendo does has people tripping over their dicks to rush in and shit on them.
And without fail, I'm assuming you get butt hurt and run in to shit on those people and try to feel superior to those people.

Its just Switch haters, ODYSSEY is good, has fun personality lots of content and its very polished, i have major problems with it, but movement/controls is not one of them op is cool

I thought the main story thread was too easy. I'm compelled to play it again though. Maybe sunshine, then galaxy, then odyssey and see what I think.

I just replayed mario64 a few months ago and sure the control is bad vs modern games but besides that it's a pure 10/10 I had an absolute blast, best game I've played this year!

wouldn't say that. There is very very little jank and it's not as smooth as modern 3D Mario. There are many modern games with way worse controls and still the base for modern 3D Mario. They only perfected it, but the starting point was already very strong. Especially compared to most console games released in the late 90s Mario 64 plays like a dream. Only the camera can be annoying.

I found the game really boring. I hated the "musical" vibe with Paula and found the majority of the world really dull. It did absolutely nothing for me unfortunately. The last great Mario game was Galaxy 2 for me. Subsequent games have all bored me. Maybe I've grown up or something.
I agree, except to say the last and only 3D Mario game I've ever loved was Super Mario 64. I don't think we've grown out of them, I just think they've not matched the quality and all round brilliance set earlier by Nintendo, same goes for Zelda I think, they were on fire in the SNES and N64 days!

New iterations are more polished I suppose, but they just lack that magic imho. Not to mention I though Odyssey's art design was all over the place, the city was so jarring, didn't fit the rest of the game at all. It reminds me of the difference between great kids movies and cartoons that also appeal to adults (think Pixar's "Inside Out"), games aimed predominantly at kids will appeal to adults if they are truly brilliant and later attempts have fallen short of that, again, all in my opinion!

I thought the same of Mario Kart 8, didn't like it at all, felt too kiddified, got a lot more out of the Sonic Racing games (not TSR), oh and my 5 year old nephew feels the same way ;)

We get it, you REALLY like Nintendo. And don't act like you're not shitting up every thread you're in.

As for this game, I really liked it. Probably my favorite switch game. But like most things Nintendo these days, it feels like it was done at 60 to 70 percent effort. Worlds felt empty in spots and a TON of the moons were ridiculous (talk to an npc....get a moon).

I love it so much, I also just replayed Galaxy 1 and 2 not that long ago and they are just as good but in a different way, I couldn't choose between them. I do understand the "why are some so many of the moons so easy to get" but I dunno I just had fun being in the world, those are clearly there for submentals and children to collect. Its a game made for everyone, like Zelda, so its going to be easy as a consequence of that.

I hope you all know that I hate each and every one of you equally.

Or more immature, there ain't a lot of hardcore or violent games that can match the finesse of the systems in Mario Odyssey.

It's a common trope among gamers to attack difficulty for no reason. Even if they like the difficulty, they will attack it if it's too easy.

But the difficulty is just a function of the game, it means nothing. It's one of the awesome things about this game, it doesn't care. It gives you tons of moons early because it wants you to explore and discover the next area.

It's AAA top tier stuff but the New York level is SOOOO ugly it was enough to drop a point off the game for me. Plus hated the musical thing they did with that level (as cringe as the voice of the FLOOD thing in Sunshine).

Of the most recent Mario games I liked the design of Bowser's Fury just a little bit more.

While Breath of the Wild is overrated and gets way more praise than it deserves the exact opposite is true for Mario Odyssey.

Odyssey is the best first-party Switch exclusive.

I wasn't fond of Odyssey's movement/controls. I grew up on SM64 and the only other 3D Mario I played was Sunshine. Odyssey felt way more rigid compared to the other two. Not to the point of being a dealbreaker or anything, I just wasn't a fan. Still a good game, with an insane post game I haven't even dipped into much yet.

I played every Mario game when it came out starting with Mario Bros 3, I got my NES late. I really enjoyed Odyssey, but yes it was too easy and it was lacking really challenging end game content. Anyway I am surprised that we never got an addon. I was thinking then that they probably have more cone than a typical addon and they decided to release it as a full price game. But here we are and I am still waiting…

Odyssey is really good, but I think 3D World is their best effort since 64. Bowser's Fury as well. If you haven't already tried it OP, I think you'd like it!

Yep.

Game is incredibly boring. Bland level design. Worthless moons. Terrible mario game.

Mechanically it does have great controls, but that's really the only positive I can say about it.

Sound observation actually, the movement really is fluid and pretty much perfected

Super Mario Odyssey could have had a lot more substantial moons to earn though. I miss how in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine that every star or shine sprite felt like a mission. A little adventure that you’d go on to achieve each one. And sometimes in Super Mario Sunshine, something as simple as a blue coin could take 10-20 minutes or longer to collect. You had to focus a bit more for those two, apply yourself a decent amount and really fine tune some things to attain certain stars/shine sprites. I like the collect-a-thon aspect of Odyssey but I still think the moons could have been better and made more memorable

I liked Super Mario Odyssey a lot but the quality moons, there are like 75-100 quality ones to earn and the rest is filler tbh. I’d take take half of Super Mario 64 over Super Mario Odyssey in its entirety any time any day without batting an eye

If every level were as well made as Toasterena it would have been easily a 9.5/10 game

3D is great when played with others, especially with kids or wacky friends, not sure it holds up nearly as highly as Mario 64 solo though.

I've mostly played it solo, and I think it's debatable whether it's better than 64 or not, but....there is at least a debate to be had there, which I wouldn't say for any other 3D Mario. It's Mario 64's movement options paired the tightness of 2D Mario level design, with a bit of Galaxy-tier imagination and spectacle thrown in.

I agree it was one of the better ones and more consistent as well, particularly regarding it's art style and theme. Definitely a good party game!

It's a solid game but in the end I thought it was a bit disappointing.

I feel the music needed to be better, the stages needed to be bigger, and there needed to be more content,

Mario 64's movement options
I like 3D World, but the digital directional movement is so much worse than the movement of Odyssey, Galaxy and Sunshine. I also like 64's movement much much more.
It's not a bad playing game at all, especially at 60 FPS on Switch, but it kinda feels gimped compared to other 3D Mario games and lacks the "elegance"

I don't need hardcore or violent to be entertained. Odyssey is just not very good. The music is dull, the world is dull, the powerups are dull, Paula is dull, the whole game is realy dull. The blend of realism with the cartoony world does not work for me. When you refer to the "systems", what systems are you referring to? The control?
