Kyle Bosman's take on Housemarque's "AAA" Returnal and $70USD games

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
I don't follow him that closely anymore, but this popped up in my feed and it was entertaining and a different take on what Housemarque has done. I think his analysis is pretty fair:

Yeah saw this the other day. I lol at his really quick part.

Also, some of us have been saying Returnal is their games like Nex Machina, Matterfall but with a bigger budget.

What time is it?
He forgot Tetris 99 for Battle Royale successes.

It's a shame Nex Machina wasn't a success as I think it is Housemarque's best game. Returnal is a bad rogue lite but an okay game and not nearly worth the price of admission, especially considering the state it launched in.

Great video but 100% disagree with Kyle about the Metroidvania bit.

Personally I say screw artistic integrity on this one, how about Housemarque provide ways for us regular folks to enjoy the game too. Like how hard it would be for them to include a mode with a fixed world layout (not random each time you die) and more persistent upgrades/progression (save points etc). If the game had a mode like this I'd love to jump back in!

I know many love the game for what it is but I personally hated the random rogue-lite crap, and hated the lack of progression between runs even more. Screw any game that expects you to play near perfect 2 hours runs with little to no progress if you fuck up. It might be a critical success and amazing for a small subset of gaming masochists but it will remain out of reach for the rest of us without more accessibility options.

After about 12 hours of banging my head against it I finally gave up. And that sucks too because the combat and game world (art, music, etc) are so interesting and really well executed. Felt super disappointing to realize I'm just not good enough to keep going. The game just expects too much imo and I just don't have the time/skills/commitment to do it.

Unless they can compromise their vision enough to include the rest of us I won't be buying their next game.

What you are looking for is entirely different game, its like me asking If I can play FF14 offline. If every game try to be everything to everybody then game industry would be bland as fuck with zero creativity.

You have to accept the fact that some games might not be for you but we have 1000 upon 1000 games for every taste and needs.

I'm glad so many people are enjoying the game. But yeah it's definitely not for me. I was just really disappointed to find that out kind of the hard way. And I imagine when the numbers come in for completion rates I won't be alone. I bet lots will end up dropping the game because it is so demanding of the player.

And I really don't see the harm in the devs making alternate modes for their game so more of us can enjoy it. The game already holds level layouts and weapon builds in memory as demonstrated with the regeneration stations. Would it really be so bad to create a mode with these as save points and infinite regeneration?

People always says this but that’s not what devs want to make and if they loose the freedom to make what they want to make then game industry would in trouble.

The game’s entire story and loop is based this Roguelike structure, what you are asking is turn the game in to different genre entirely.

The most memorable games in gaming comes from when devs wants to design their games for specific experience.

Reminds me a little of Final Bossman, I liked it.

Didn't knew they also developed Super Stardust HD, fun little game.
They’ve actually been around since way back in the 80s in some way or form. I did some googling and Housemarque was formed when Bloodhouse and Terramarque merged, made Stardust on Amiga, one of Terramarque’s founders was Stavros Fasoulas from Thalmus, the creator of the awesome C64 shmup Delta for example. That’s a legendary history from my point of view!

I do love the idea of devs having full freedom to create what they want so I'm going to reluctantly agree with you here although I'd like it put in my contract that I'm sad in this particular case.

This dev team is extremely talented, and I hope they are able to find a large enough audience to justify the AAA budget and future creative freedom. But coming from a completely selfish place I hope a more persistent mode is part of their vision.

From a completely selfish perspective I want them to have two teams, one big AAA team and one small A or AA shmup team. Housemarque is one of the few old ones left that can pull off great old school action. And imagine Returnal with a side-view perspective! Hello Metroid! I’d love it in top-down view too. Might not sell but for pure action it’s better.

To me depends how much you gonna get out of the game, game price doesnt bother me as ive been gaming since the nes first came out and game prices have never really changed, i can remember paying £50-£60 for a nintendo 64 game when i was only earning £150 a week, now im earning £850 a week, for me i wouldnt buy returnal if it was a £1, but other games like village, ratchet etc ive bought the deluxe digital versions as i no im gonna get a load of hrs entertainment out of it

That part reminds me of how Sucker Punch talked about their idea for a game before they decided on Ghost of Tsushima. It looked like a generic enough game that it didnt get greenlit. I think that could be what Kyle was talking about. Not looking generic but feeling like ok, been here done that. Maybe more ppl will like it with a save feature similar to other rogue like/lite games. Dont know.

Rogue games are a throw back to playing in arcades. To early home console games.

Just watched the part about the price, and one thing that ppl dont realize or forget is game prices went up $10 between the PS1 and PS4 at least 1-2 times. Meanwhile I remember getting Mario 64 for $99 and N64 games averaged $59-$79. Nintendo was doing $59 while the competition's games were cheaper. .

Yeah, thats before the PS360 Wii era.

Ppl upset about game prices just dont remember those older times or werent around then. Ppl are lucky they didnt go up $10 for the PS4, XBO. I think both Sony and MS were worried about doing it then coming off the PS3 and 360. And we still dont know what MS's prices are for Series exclusives.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Well even bossman can be wrong some times :messenger_beaming:

Sure the less then stellar says reflect that too. If it was a more “standard” scifi shooter it would have sold more unlike what he says.

yes, let's pretend like physical does not exist and smaller prices does not exist, finn does not exist. just ignore everything. some people just stupid and creates walls where there non.
We are not pretending, however nonetheless it's true and I don't know here are retails almost same as the digital, yes you can resell it, I know, but does anyone actually does that

i can't follow you, can you elaborate?
Well I don't know, I don't pretend that retail does not exist, however the price for that game on official store (well digital) is how that person said, so it's not that he is full of shit. And the game in retail cost the same here in retail as it does on digital. Here some receipts:

Returnal - PS5 - Hra na konzoli | Alza.cz

Returnal – exkluzivní hry pro PS5 | PlayStation

Well almost the same, holy fuck the price on the PSN store, more than Demon's Souls. That is a 102, this is a 105 USD game. That's crazy.

Not the mention, this is beside the topic at hand, but we earn fuck all in comparison to Nordic countries...

first, why to cry about the price when you choose most expensive price? that's makes no sense at all. that's is stupid as feck.
second, retail price is not the same as digital, i just showed my pre-order.

we are talking about Norway, not cz or other countries, i know nothing about other countries but i know a lot about prices in Norway.

hmmmm you are saying this having not played it

I got more enjoyment than most games at full price
I wouldn't pay 102$US for my favorite game of all time. Especially knowing in 6 months it will be half that. To some people playing it early is not worth the extra cost.
This game would've not existed if not funded and supported by Sony, period.
Did they shop around the game and get turned down by everyone except Sony?

I am selfish when it comes to discussing prices and a games worth. I don't care how much a game is or is not worth to you. I only care how much it is worth to me. Returnal is not worth $70+ to me but I don't care that they priced it at that price point. I will pick it up at $30 when it gets there. This is entertainment and not a life sustaining product.

Games should have set prices, how many fuck-ups you had during development is not my problem.
And your arrogance level should not set the price either

Looks like a great game and id love to play it but I have enough of a backlog and in the UK prices have gone from £50 ($70) to £70 ($100) not just the $10 jump for the USA so yeah... I'll pass for now, it's not like we're limited for choice to games these days. It'll be the same with Ratchet and Clank when that drops soon.
