Yes you are because online servers shutting down for games and a store for an older console being taken down are entirely different things to the backbone of an entire online service being shut down.

The online service should not have any tie to the physical PS4 discs that I purchased. Yet Sony chose to intertwine physical PS4 games with a cmos/Internet check-in. It’s shitty. It’s unlikely to be an issue but still it’s shitty.

I haven’t heard if Nintendo does the same crap, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

I wouldn't be suprised if before the server shutdown some people will mod their battery slot to allow 2 battery at the same time. Remove the old one, while the new is plugged in so you dont loose power. With some soldering you can add something like this

But i still think hacking the authentication will be the more popular way. If people still care about ps4 in 15+ years

I am confident that by the time Sony's not around to handle clock syncing issues on the locked hardware, we will have trivial ways of redirecting to our own servers, custom firmware to mitigate it, and affordable quantum computers capable of breaking all the standard encryption that makes all of our current networking and devices function securely.

In 20 years, nerds will probably be rolling up their sleeves on a new tech standard, propping up or emulating the insecure "old internet" features for ourselves.

I always trust Xbox despite them previously tried a draconian Online Only system and Phil Spencer tried to double on XBL subscription forcing Gamepass Ultimate on everyone last year and only backpedall latter on because of the backlash on social media, i trust them they never tried to do something sneaky on me.

As I am a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber I already gladly pay 15 bucks a month – it's worth it IMO! So the doubling the gold price wasn't effecting me in any way. Despite that, I was one of the people in that thread to call them out for it and they listened and didn't went forward with it the next morning. Xbox at least is listening.

Paid online was introduced by them. Yes. But the service was and is hands down better then what PS offers. The money they earn went into investing in their infrastructure. Now they have both paid online and while PS+ earns a lot of money none of that money is being invested in making PSN a better place. Every time there is a comparison between Xbox Live and PSN it's Xbox Live that wins pretty easily in the comparison.

So why wouldn't I trust them? 90% of my digitally and physically bought games from the Xbox360 gen are BC and play better then ever on the new consoles. We also get improvements for those for free all the time. They also value me as a customer, with MS Rewards I make close to 300 $ a year in giftcards. I'm more then happy with being in their ecosystem, why wouldn't I.

That's not the issue. The issue is how the console acts afterwards, it needs to re-authenticate so it will play your games, but the issue is if the store is taken down (something Sony have done recently for the PS3, PSP and Vita) then it would leave the console with no ability to authenticate itself and as such, it will refuse to play games.

It's a design flaw, we'll get to a point in time where you can play PS1/2, Mega Drive, Dreamcast, etc, but the PS4 and 5 will be bricks. Unless of course Sony patch it towards EoL.

The issue is that, people are focusing on replacing the battery too much, it's what happens AFTER the battery is replaced that's the problem.

There was a thread recently where was asked which console people prefered most when they owned both and Xbox was leading that poll despite the fact that many PS only fanboys were voting PS.

The warchest is opened isn't it? Nadella said after they bought out Zenimax they weren't done yet. The games will inevitably come don't worry. And the best thing is it will cost us Game Pass Ultimate subscribers not a penny more then what we were already paying.

I'm not really sure it should be considered a design flaw since it seems to be intended. It can certainly be considered bad design from a costumer standpoint.

This clock is all about trophy time stamps? I know the PS3 also has an internal clock that trophies use rather than the clock users can set. It seems strange for Sony to care so much about time stamps when they seemingly don't care at all about users unlocking multiple thousands of trophies instantly and syncing them to the servers.

So FUD, CONCERN, and then the usual GamePass sale pitch and some doom and gloom with a good table spoon of Xbox fans riding an emotion driven concern wave. Once the thread revealed itself to be yet another blown up storm in a teacup, it was bound to go in this direction.

To comple the bingo we have mentions of Nadella, the Warchest, and Zenimax… totally not aligned to MS marketing plugging the Zenimax purchase on social media for the last month or so almost non stop.

Considering they are using the same exact auth mechanism for al these gens, you are still comparing closing the PS3 store to something which is best summarised as PSN as we know it shutting down completely… as others already commented, at that point the server being up is not the worst thing that is happening and it also means nobody is keeping security measures up.

If they keep the auth servers till the end of time than they do not need to care about PS3/4/5 to fix it as it will not be a problem. Still, sure, if they can do something to keep security up but still avoid even the potential scenario this thread describe it would be best.

I would like to understand more about the security of the current model and what the impact is, the attitude of blowing up concern threads to create enough bad press to force a change does not mean much in and of itself.

I do not think anyone is against this being fixed, but trying to make it some doomsday scenario worse and more likely than it actually is generates pushback especially once console warriors start riding it.

We can't rely on companies to preserve games once they are not profitable anymore. Original hardware and disks don't last forever either. Like with many past systems it will be done through modding, emulation and ilegal copying. If I were a game creator I'd rather have that than let my work be destroyed by time.

Totally different IRL experience. Nobody is talking about Xbox except die hard fans.
People are buying PS5s from scalpers close to double price. Few sold their XSX as soon as they get their hands on a PS5. Casuals that I didn't even know are interested in gaming are posting videos of themselves playing Astros playroom.

There is an offline mode for Xbox. But, I think you gotta connect at least once a month?

It's been 30 years and I still use my MegaDrive. Obviously people won't be using their PS5 in 30 years.

I have had to replace my CMOS battery in my Saturn about two years ago. It was fine. I will be willing to bet you 30 years from now I will be able to play my PS5 if I choose to do so. Odds are I will be playing my PSXI getting ready for the PSXII launch.


Currently, it is a non issue mostly being voiced by people that will never own the PS5. If/when they ever shutdown the PS4/PS5 service if they do not provide a check in for the legacy consoles I will worry about it then. I do not believe it would be hard for them to have that check in even if they shutdown the market side of the service.

People keep pointing to the PSP/Vita market shutdown. You know? You can still download and play the games that you own. I expect this will be no different.

Yep, both have the same issue. The only ones to my surprise that allows you to play without internet connection, is the Nintendo Switch.
