Various PS3 games no longer let you download patches.

Wow, now that's some shit. Although it has been stated that most PS3 games can run fine without patches, certain games require them for trophies.

Hey, come on guys, this is the online, digital download only future everyone has been raving about! This is what's best for gamers, best for developers, best for retailers, and best for video gaming! Why are you guys trying to stop progress? Why are you trying to delay the future? Digital only is the BEST way for games to be published!
You do know you compare sonys shitty digital structure up against rest of the industry?

Just because Sony doesn't give a shit about your previous purchases doesn't mean you can say the digital future is like that. You can still buy old xbox games from the original on xbox live, and on pc you can digitally buy games from the dawn of time.

Sony should step up their digital game instead of blaming the whole industry for the basic things Sony can't get right.

if you ask me, i personally would not play a game without any patches, even it runs well lol

I’m loving every minute of it. This proves that Sony is not the godsend of the gaming industry and it proves that they can have flaws.
Why this stuff in particular? Do the countless other times they've fucked up over the past two generations not count or something?

Here we go with the assumptions. I'm not going to answer that. NO COMMENT, NEXT QUESTION. YOU OVER THERE, WHAT IS YOUR QUESTION?

For the games affected, is Sony still selling them on their digital store? That would be even worse. Imagine buying a game from PSN, there's no latest patch that goes with it, so the game wont work.

I'm just saying, Sony have been messing up at a pretty constant rate since the launch of the PS3. If there are people who still think Sony is, as you claim, the "godsend of the gaming industry" after all of that, then this won't convince them either.

I updated my entire PS3 library like a week before they announced the upcoming shutdown. Had to clear my 360 cache to unfuck Undead Nightmare (headless glitch) and download all the patches again, decided to check all my PS3 games for updates as well. Glad I did. As for the future of PS3, seems like homebrew is the only viable solution going forward, Sony's made it clear they do not care about long time support for paying customers.

Glad I never spent any money on PSN / XBL purchases, I've had this scenario in the back of my mind ever since DLC became a thing (and DLC for the OG Xbox disappeared forever). Although I will be investing some money on external SSD's to back up my Steam, Origin, Uplay and Epic libraries, I just don't have faith in any of these companies not to screw me over in the long run.

Meanwhile Steam still carries games from that era without any problems.

And some of you wonder why PC gamers are smug.
Your trial of winrar has expired. Would you like to register? Registration gives you more hdd space and optimizes your ram for peak performance.

Aren't psn version updated ?
Not sure if that worked that way in ps3 era - but currently you download up to date versions

I'm not sure what's your point - no one sane uses winrar anymore

This is the future they wanted after all🙃

After the PS3 online is shut down completely, people that bought their games digitally better hope their console doesn't crap out on them cause then they're games are gone forever.

If you have Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds on disc (like I did do) - you cannot patch the game anymore - meaning you cannot access the DLC courses or characters , which were never released on disc.
GG Sony.
This shit is beyond unacceptable.

That is, has anyone called them on this shit publicly?

Jim Ryan burying what he can of the 7th generation of video games. Sony basically giving people more incentive to jailbreak their consoles so they remain functional. I guess on the bright side, people who have PS3s are paying attention to them now.

and yet, knowing this, we still buy digital DLC, pay for gamepass, use xcloud and PSN now for streaming games, invest (little) in to Stadia.

Face it people, the hardcore gamers were abandoned a decade ago, now we're seeing the casual gamers abandoned for mobile gamers.

Not to pick on Microsoft but Phil Spencer said there were 3 billion gamers. Yet there are only, at best, 1 billion PCs and consoles.

And when the mobile gamers come to console en masse, a gaming platform like the Wii will happen, open the door for Google/Amazon/Facebook and it'll be Halo of Duty : Candy Crush origins day one edition

I just installed every disc game and downloaded every digital game I have for the PS3. All games patched fine thankfully I don't have any of these specific versions of specific games. Approx 300GB of data backed up on another PS3 and a HDD. Let's hope this battery issue is not an issue.

Everytime I hear how great pc is with backwards compatibility. Is it really? I have almost 1000 discs and most will never run on anything past windows 98.

All this news makes me happier with my approach with Sony all along: buy physical.

With my Xboxes, I have purchased the majority of my games digitally. Every now and then would buy physical through BOGO sales at Target or whatever, but I have trusted Microsoft's approach to digital from the start. Sony and Nintendo on the other hand? I have mostly purchased physical.

With Sony there are a handful of PSVR games I bought digitally, but all of the big games I have gone physical. Yes, I know if the patches are not downloadable, then the game on the physical disc is broken, but it is still better than nothing. Sony lost a lot of my trust when PSN was hacked and seeing how they made it next to impossible to change your gamertag due to the way they set up their databases. I love Sony's big blockbuster games, but everything else I have always gone on Xbox, even when the Xbox One had the lower resolution and FPS, because I trusted their approach more.

Now this does not mean MS cannot betray that trust in the future, but as of now I still think I can trust them. For those getting burned by Sony's approach on this, I feel for ya.

If it's a DOS game, just use DOSBox. If compatibility mode doesn't work for Win 95/98 games, just use an emulator like PCem or set up a VM.

I play 90s and early 2000s games almost exclusively, and it's super rare for me to run into something that I straight-up can't get to work on Windows 10.

I just don’t get why they’ve given a date, like with DriveClub, but they don’t even stick to it? What’s the point?

Issue seems to be exclusive to Sony, going all digital on Xbox seems less risky

This is ridiculous. Added to that the fact that you have to wait to activate background downloads on PS3 which seems to be all I've done when I've turned the machine on the last week.

Meanwhile, I just put my original Splinter Cell disk from 2002 into my series X and not only did it work, it downloaded a 4k version of the game.

Anyone investing in Sony's digital environment at the moment is an absolute fool.
Makes you wonder if this (shutting down digital stores, stopping patches etc.) is the blueprint of what will happen with PS4 games after ps6 is released

Dosbox doesn't always work. The emulation is never anywhere as good as the original oses running it.

And i still can't get Scarface working on anything past windows xp or Pandora's box on anything past windows 98.

They should be two separate things in the first place. What they're doing falls very close to a potential lawsuit, because they're robbing you from accessing the latest version of the game you've purchased without giving you any warnings. It's not about shutting down optional purchases from the store.

Not sure why people are posting Jim Ryan, in the PS3 error we had the fortune teller, telling us that rumble in controllers was "last gen" and would be dead forever.

I used to love Sony's policies and the way they operated. Backwards compatibility, cross buy with Vita, remote play on Vita, the original PS+ subscription, free online etc. It seems the only thing they offer me now is the best of the best exclusive games and nothing more. All the personality is stripped from the service at the moment.

I was a borderline Sony fanboy, but Microsoft have just knocked it out of the park in terms of their service. Mainly it's because of backwards compatibility and the fact original Xbox and 360 games have next gen patches etc. The service is alive. Digital refunds and early access along with Gamepass just make it a great eco system.

Sony is for the exclusives.
Microsoft is for the libray.

I can only agine how much I would love my PS5 if it did all the things the Series X does.

This news is a bit devastating. Games like Uncharted 3 needed patches imo to fix the aiming etc. There's probably better examples. I can't say anything that hasn't been said already. Either you care about preservation or you don't. I fall into the camp that does so this news sucks.

Digital only is flawless on pc, xbox and tbh pretty much any other platform.

I'm not buying digital on Sony hardware again. Apart from PSN only games anyway. Disc based exclusives and all multiplatform games on Xbox.

A lot of digital fear mongering in here.

There's speculation that this is due to how Sony's servers worked at the time. The patches aren't stored on the PSN for some games, but on the servers for those individual games. When the servers are no longer supported, the patches are no longer available.

I don't know how true that is, but if it is the issue it seems like short-sightedness and, honestly, fairly typical of the PSN around the early PS3 days.

That doesn't mean there's going to be any magical fixes, but it's also safe to assume they're not doing that any longer. PSN is mountains better than it was pre-hack.

Saw this thread a while
Back. It’s limited to certain regions and very few games. Most people tried the games and the patches downloaded fine.

I have a feeling that Sony completely rebuilt PSN for the PS4 (I think they also hinted as such around launch in their financials), and are desperate to ditch everything else. There is probably no feasible, or at least cost effective, way for PS3 to interface with the new PSN structure.

Now you're just exaggerating. And like I said, if you absolutely have to run them on an old OS, set up a VM. It's not rocket science.

Coincidentally, I played Scarface just last year using this fix: https://cookieplmonster.github.io/2020/03/29/silentpatch-scarface/

As for Pandora's Box, I was able to get it running on Windows 10 in about 5 minutes, and most of that time was spent waiting for the game to download. This patch was all it took: https://download.cnet.com/Pandora-s-Box-Patch/3000-2121_4-10187112.html
