Move Over Horse Armor - The New Xbox Wireless Headset Comes With 6 Months Of Dolby Atmos

The poor attempts at console warring in this thread are hilarious. It's crazy trying to spin this into a MS vs. Sony thing.
OP here, for the record... never once mentioned Sony in the OP of the follow up question.

People and their persecution complexes did.

In fact, I praised both headsets in their quality and feature set for $99.

Also so much bitching about general capitalism from a bunch of capitalists. What do you expect when you let the rich choose the economic system?
Capitalism is what puts the incentive for people to even invent and distribute that kind of stuff... and find some ways to monetize the damn thing, what happens next is:
1 - people pay so they keep doing it
2 - not enough people pay, so they find some other way to get money from their license...

But these are 99$ headphones, that apparently sound very good, so them trying something like that isn't that surprising, especially given how MS has always been pushy for monetization sine they found out they could get away with charging for Xbox live.

I guess it could be seen as overreacting to some, but I actually see where the OP is coming from.

Over much of the past year, he's been looking forward to Tempest, and all the hype about it being a comparable alternative to Dolby atmos is both sound and quality.

Except that it turned out to be crap. After hearing how terrible the audio quality is, OP really had a moment of reflection. Over time his disappointment turned to jealousy. "Why should all those Xbots have access to not 1... but 2 superior alternatives?" It just didn't seem fair. At some point, his jealousy lead him to looking into just how much better Dolby atmos really is. Would it give him thoughts of driving ice picks into his ears as Tempest had? Surely not. Having read the about the wonderful audio that he would never experience due to his pledge to Playstation. The closest he would ever get is by reading about the experiences of others more fortunate than him. Sunk in depression, and just as he was about to close his eyes to pray to lord Cerny, his fell across something that gave him a glimmer of hope...

The Licensing cost is a one time fee of $15 dollars for Dolby atmos. Having never even had the option of using Dolby before, the fee confused him. Working the thought around his head, it suddenly occured to him as to what should be done. This was powerful knowledge that couldn't be wasted. A true warrior such as himself had to act. For this, he'd need to protect himself with only the best battle armor Sony had to offer.

As he pulled up the inflatable yellow ducky floaty over his whitey tighties that still bore the stains of a thousand cheetos. He sat down at his battle station, and began typing.

What, giving people an opportunity to try something for free to then see if they want to pay for it in the long run? Yeah, terrible, how dare they give people to option to buy/not buy something....
Why not implement it fully in the first place? see?

Nice fanfic! I give you an A for effort. I shall title it, 'Tales Projected From Deep Within My Arse'

I don't even own a PS5 and been gaming mainly on my new 3070 equipped gaming laptop I purchased instead. 🤷‍♀️

Because its optional, its an extra, its something you have a choice over whether you want to buy it or not based on a 6 month free trial. The license is something Dolby demands payment for on all such devices, if MS had added it as a standard then they would have had to add a cost to that. Would you prefer that?

The thing is just a stereo headset..

That's the real funny thing; all this marketing has tricked everyone into thinking otherwise lol.. same with the Sony "Pulse 3D"...it's... a stereo headset too lol

In fact, it also supports Dolby Atmos for Headphones. Just plug it into your XSX controller and pay the license fee.. and voila, Dolby Atmos for Headphones on your Pulse 3D!

(or plug some Apple Earbuds in.. or some $5 gas station counter earbuds...)

But still this thread exists. 🤷‍♂️

Bad MS, giving you the option to choose a third-party software solution IF YOU WANT TO.

They could had taken the cost, then it would not be seem as an extra. That is my point.
I mean come on, Microsoft is not on charity. All companies are after your money. Why defend them? Do not defend any company. Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft etc all of them make shitty things and we are consumers let them get away with it.

Yeah, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that given all the crying you do over $15.... That it's very unlikely you would/could pay for a PS5.

They provide you with an alternative. That's free. While MS isn't on charity, they don't run one either. It's really not about defending a company, or it's evil shady practices.

You can pay for the service, or choose not to. Simple as that.

Mentions of xbox live are not console warring, not at this point.

Also, I don't care who this is from,MS released the product with the "tech" in a headset of all things. I have tons of motherboards that required special licenses for whatever features, Intel charged to unlock features on some CPUs, on disc DLC always got a bad rap.

That has nothing to do with Sony, other than Sony has released some headphones that just work with all their features out of the box... No B.S. like it does have Atmos, but you need to give us your credit card to get it, and pay forever.

That's the thing though. There is no "tech" in the headset that was released. The tech is the software that exists as an option on the Xbox console itself.

Just like with Windows Sonic, any old $5 headphones will do. I've tested it in RE2, you still do get the 3D effect on cheap buds, though it does sound better on the cheap wired headset that I have (Turtle Beach R70 or something like that, junk but bigger cans).

The tech is not in the headset though... the headset, like literally every stereo headset on the planet "supports Dolby Atmos for Headphones."

Dolby charges money for this.

MS's marketing including the fact that it supports something every stereo headset does is really the problem. Tons of people think that it requires this headset (just as many thought Sony's Tempest Audio required a "3D" headset when it doesnt)

It sure does. Thread was created based a news article, and all the persecution complexes acting like they are carrying the X to be nailed to came in crying and stomping their feet.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Let's take out a feature and call it an extra because now it's called options. Let our fans defend us, they love us.

Applies to every any company you can think off.

I tried to make my point but if you disagree, lets agree on disagree :)

Capitalism currently stifles innovation and invention. Things are only made if they will make money.

How am I defending them exactly, you have literally just agreed with me by saying they aren't a charity, they will have a price point on each thing they sell, if they had included this license then that cost would have needed adding into the the overall selling price, it would have been another £15 more. What the have done here is given people the option of paying that...or not, and you think this is a bad thing? So weird.

It's the truth. If something isn't profitable regardless of social value it will not exist. The only proponents of capitalism are the rich and the dumb.

Outside of medical devices/advancement and that kind of thing, I don't see capitalism as a hindrance. More of a necessary catalyst.

People are lazy by nature, the prospect of "hitting it big" is what provides the drive to innovate in the first place.

Ah yes, same as Windows Sonic then.
I'm fine, I'm not the one crying over a thread because my misguided feelings are hurt for my favorite brand, all while pretending there is some gamer persecution complex and only Xbox ever gets criticism on the internet or these very boards.

What in the world are you talking about? lol
Honestly I have no idea. Apparently its disgusting for a company to give people a free trial on something that they can then decide if they want to buy, something that needs to be bought on every single other device its available on. But what they should have done instead is added it in, raised the selling price and basically told anyone that didn't want it "tough, you've got it and you're paying for it"....

I give up. When the denial is so strong... there is nothing one can do about it.
I just don't think you know WTF you are talking about.

This is not a feature that was ever included with anything...

Really it's a piece of software that Dolby sells. You can buy this software for Windows or XBox, that's the 2 places they sell it.

That's... it. MS didn't take anything away from anybody.. nor did Dolby really, as this is not the Dolby Atmos codec that actually decodes your surround sound movies.. that comes with the Xbox already. This is a separate piece of software that turns any surround sound (including DTS) into fake virtualized surround sound on any stereo headset (fake because stereo is 2 speakers.)

That's.. it.. Xbox comes w/ Windows Sonic which does the same thing (and works with Dolby Atmos as a codec.)

I'm not in denial about anything.. this type of software isn't even offered elsewhere.. only on Windows and Xbox.. it's the only console where Dolby sells this software. It was never taken away from anyone, as it's never been given to anyone..
