Marketing is the fucking cringiest career path on the planet.

Marketing is what creates 90% of the mindless console warrior zombies on this board, it’s also 90% of the content here, if having that kind of influence is cringey then your job must be pretty incredible.

Not sure what you mean, but basically nothing would change for users, except cost and the branding.

I just think they will just get rid of Xbox Live, and instead require Game Pass to play all paid multiplayer games online (non free to play). They fucked up by just trying to double the price of the XBLG multiplayer paywall without offering something else. Their approach next time will be more subtle. They'll still find a way to make everyone on Xbox consoles pay $10/month for Xbox Live Game Pass just to play online multiplayer.

Users with current XBL subs will get their remaining term converted to GP for no extra cost, and Microsoft will be able to massively increase the number of Game Pass subscribers overnight. They'll be forcing Xbox console users to pay $10/month just to play online multiplayer (except free to play) but they will get away with it (this time) because that same $10/month subscription will also get you all 1st party xbox games.
Well let’s say the multiplayer game is on gamepass. Yet you need gamepass to gain multiplayer ability, the game sold separately would essentially be completely redundant at retail or digital. The individual game market would no longer be sustainable on Xbox.

Interesting point, but it wouldn't impact any huge multiplayer games really because most/all are not on game pass or are free to play. Like the paid mp in CoD isn't on GP, and Halo mp will be free to play, etc. Maybe games like Fall Guys would spend a few months on Game Pass but then leave, so there'd still be a reason to buy some multiplayer games.

And even if that happens, I think Microsoft is okay with that. By like 2023, I bet Xbox games will launch exclusively on Game Pass on day 1, and then only become available to purchase for $60 like 3-6 months later. Movies & shows do that by debuting only in theaters or on Netflix/Disney/etc, and then become available to purchase later. I don't think Microsoft really care that much about selling individual games for $60 anymore.

By that token, if a player focuses on the annual COD release and has little interest in paying double to play it online on XsX, they may look towards the cheaper psn.

If gamepass is all that, let it speak for itself, don’t coerce people into it. People will engage if it’s a legit proposition. So make online free, collect from the f2p Mtx and the retail multiplayer games with the battle passes etc. And sell gamepass to anyone that wants it.

I'm not saying its the best business idea, I just bet its what will happen.

I think they're betting on getting people to pay that extra $60/year (vs PS Plus) for all their 1st party games.

And other than free to play, multiplayer will never be free on consoles. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo are charge for it, and they always will. Sucks.

I can't understand why they would drop the name so soon after the aborted price hike. It would be awesome if they dropped the paywall, but that just doesn't sound plausible after the aborted price hike. Could they really be going all in and making gp mandatory for online?

They could introduce some new Game Pass tier that includes online gaming and first party games only (which replaces the now useless Games with Gold). Pricing could be the same as current XBL Gold.

First Sony with the name change and now Microsoft. It’s going to take a while getting used to calling it “XBOX Network” I feel, but I suppose it makes sense. I got a feeling that they will probably implement some changes to the network.

They are just remove Live from brand names and then using the service afterwards in lower case.

If you were connect online, instead of connecting to the Xbox Live network it's not just Xbox network

Live has had its day and needs to die ( rip Live Messenger)

Sorry off topic. "Artsy people"
BAD design. "so it's a x on a box but let's make it a sphere" If I did that when I was at university, my teacher would had kill me.
Graphic design is my passion lol
That logo was introduced with the Xbox 360, 360 degrees like a sphere.....

I really don't know how to feel about this. I know it's a name change and that's the only difference, but it's almost like PlayStation not calling its next console a PlayStation anymore. Perhaps at least not numbering it. Xbox Live just sounded good to say. It rolled off the tongue for me.

Definetly a downgrade in branding it's just laughable that some people are actually getting paid 6 figures in a Teams call making this decision.

Expect no less from the people who came up with Series S/X

They have to phase out Live, so seems like a logical first step.

“The update from ‘Xbox Live’ to ‘Xbox network’ is intended to distinguish the underlying service from Xbox Live Gold memberships.”

To be honest, this quote sounds like the Xbox Live name isn't going anywhere. You will continue to buy Xbox Live membership to access the Xbox network. Akin to buying PS Plus to access PSN.

Although, with the attempted gold price increase, they seemed to be pushing users towards GPU. They might want that $15 rather than $10.

I don’t see them putting online behind a bigger pay wall. It would be a PR nightmare if they try. They are going to have to suck it up and make online free and then incentivize Game Pass subs even harder. If they try to force this, it won’t end well.

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
They aren't getting rid of Gold.... we went through this last year where everyone was guessing all online would be free because MS killed off 12 month Gold cards.. turns out, MS was just hiking the price.. of XBLG.. a huge cash cow for them.

Agreed. I think they should just leave it as it is (unless the discussion is lowering the price, only down not up :messenger_winking_tongue: ) and work to sell GP outside of Live, but just look at a few months ago,...

@ IntentionalPun IntentionalPun , they did allow existing subscribers to keep the old price, so it wasn't exactly the cash grab on existing users that some made it out to be.
