Sony set to buy Square Enix

It would make sense. They already buy exclusively for almost every Final Fantasy game. It would be on par with Microsoft buying Bethesda.

AS much as the last decade of FF games has blown, I still lumped in FF16 as a reason to keep my PS5 so whatever. I still prefer to play games on PC but It's not like I would care too much.

Maybe if someone bought them they would take better care of their franchises, cough, Deus Ex,

They probably don't need to buy them... a strategic partnership would be enough but if there was major interest, I can see them being pushed to buy them though.

Some amazing IP's in there.... Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex, Nier.

Other popular games such as Tomb Raider that could have some crossover with Uncharted, Just cause etc.

and then Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest and other properties that have a lot of synergy with the Anime side of Sony.

Maybe they'll make a Nier Anime if there is some deal.

I would love a new Legacy of Kain game written by Amy Hennig.

I dont understand and will never understand the obsession some people have for these buyouts. I mean sony buying square or any studio for that matter doesn't guarantee a successful business move. They have closed studios before because they were unsustainable.
I understand where you are coming from, but pragmatically speaking SE games to my knowledge perform by far the best on PlayStation platforms, so I don’t think SE would be losing out on significant profit like a Bethesda or EA buyout.

I really doubt that Sony will buyout SE especially since they seem pretty close already though.

The only reason this might be credible is the way SquareEnix seems to be fucking up on major fronts when it comes to AAA on multiple fronts. At this point I would love to see a Sony funded Deus Ex sequel, or a Normal Avengers game that is given enough time and a proper dev team.

If they wanted to buy them out they'd have to pay larger than the current market cap which has its value from selling on Nintendo and Xbox. Unless Sony plans on doing this as an investment (like Minecraft) over doing it as a strategic move; then it's a lot of extra money spent and going to take a lot longer to get it back.

I'm with whatever's best for Square bringing the games, whether they're bought or better off on their own.

Yeah, they are going to sell themselves at bargain bin prices because they have already made money from Sony ?? lol

Learn to read instead of making a snarky reply.

What I'm getting at is that their market value is very close to their purchase value for Sony. It has nothing to do with Square accepting a shitty deal, and everything to do with Sony not overpaying.

In comparison, Bethesda which sells a ton of games on Sony platforms - Microsoft will have to essentially OVERPAY for something that isn't as valuable to their platform since the market value is based upon sales on Sony and Nintendo consoles, and now they very likely won't sell their games on those platforms.

I always figured Sony was going to buy out one of the two either Square-Enix or Capcom. I wonder if it turns out that they do buy out Square-Enix. Will Sony make it solely exclusive PlayStation platforms and maybe PC? Or will do do what people are claiming that Microsoft will continue to share Bethesda games. This is going to be very interesting if true.

Not that I believe the rumor, but Square probably is the one Japanese company that Sony wouldn't have to pay a premium for since their games really don't do well on the Xbox anyway.

Capcom and others tend to sell decently on Xbox on a relative basis, but Square is overwhelmingly Sony already.
These bolded comments are unbelievably ridiculous.

Square wouldn't benefit from that deal at all. They're in a much better position now than they would be under Sony.

Rumour has it that square enix could become part of playstation studios

Any Thoughts?

I mean, it would not be a bad buy, but I think Capcom would be a better purchase. They've done many deals with both company's so who knows. Any other time I'd say this is just unlikely, but after the Zenimax deal, I don't know what is or isn't likely anymore with this gen lol

We've seen some wild shit thus far so.... who knows. Going solely based on the history of the Tech Noir, I'd say no. In general, could happen as Sony has stated they are seeking acquisitions, but I wouldn't believe that rumor from Tech Noir though.

People have always made the argument that Sony themselves should make more Japanese RPGs and counter will always remain the same, the majority of the companies that make jrpgs for PlayStation also happen to sell the majority of their units through PlayStation which means Sony's not gaining as much as you think because let's be honest here as somebody who loves the Final Fantasy franchise I'm probably going to continue to purchase those games on a PlayStation.

soooooooo you are not really getting that much more people to buy into your system then you think because the majority of the people who already enjoy squares games already buy their games on PlayStation to my knowledge only 18% of their sales come from stuff outside of PlayStation which means they're already getting the vast majority of those customers anyway.

So I'm not saying it won't happen simply that if Sony makes the choice not to purchase them I completely understand why.

That is not at all how any of this works. Long story short, Sony would still pay a healthy 25-40%+ premium to acquire Square Enix.

Square is easily the most slanted third party publisher in favor of Sony even if we adjust and remove the exclusivity deals. So no, it's not ridiculous at all

It is for a multitude of reasons.

Going to take more than a literal who's twitter account to make believe this. I mean Does SE even want to sell? Does Sony want to Spend THAT much money for someone whose already in their back pocket anyways? Seems too good to be true.

Man bringing back Amy to revive LoK is all I could want from this aquisition

First off Square games sell well on Xbox and secondly just because their games sell better on Play Station doesn't mean that Sony wouldn't have to pay the same amount for a buy out as any other company.

I'd be interested in seeing how Square sales are on Xbox. I'm not even fully aware of which ones do or do not launch on Xbox.

Do we have any details?

YES, Sony would pay a premium to buy Square. This happens with ALL acquisitions.

NO, they would not be paying a 100% premium like Bethesda, given that 7.5B of market cap is very unlikely to produce a discounted cashflow of 7.5B now when you reduce the userbase by around HALF. In the model that Bethesda can only release games on Xbox or PC, their projected discounted cashflow is probably closer to 3.5B.

Can honestly say I'd only miss tomb raider
Oh crap I forgot about that! I don’t care about Final Fantasy but I’ve enjoyed the TR trilogy a lot, even Shadow to some degree. It would be awful to see TR locked to Playstation, with some luck I guess we could see it on PC but knowing Sony that would happen years later, possibly with some bullshit EGS exclusivity crap.

Why do I have the burden of proof when the original claim was made by the person I quoted?
All have as SQ-Enix continues to make games on Xbox.
If they didn't they would cut support.

it would better to buy Ubisoft and make some sort of strategic partnership with SE.
Ubisoft has huge collection of games which pushing enormous numbers. plus they have some shooters and GAS games which could be useful to Sony for long run.

I get what youre saying. Alot of SE's value is predicated on how well they sell on playstation since thats where the bulk of their sales come from. Depriving them of xbox really wouldnt change things for them.

Why didn't you challenge the person that stated they don't sell well???
Where is the burden of proof for that poster?
I was responding to his assumption.
SqEnix continues to release games on Xbox which should be enough proof they do well on Xbox.

Stop telling everyone to do your research for you. Youre the one telling us that SE games sell well On xbox, so prove it.

Sure but you didn't challenge the poster who stated otherwise and until you do I won't
You know MS don't give the numbers so if Square doesn't you'll never know which means you pulled your numbers out thin air.
